We have CenturyLink fiber internet (just internet and phone) at a speed of 40gig. We are experiencing intermittent outages that seem to happen a couple of times an hour. Power cycling the router (ours, not the CenturyLink one) works to restore service. This happened last fall on a Sunday night; by the morning the problem had disappeared. I have our router on an automatic reset every night at 2:30 am. I have also reset their ONT (Optical Network Terminal) and the VLAN Tagging switch I have between the ONT and the router. So far, after power cycling those two additional things it has been stable.
    Anybody else getting outages today?

    Thanks-

    Val

Thanks EdSane. I never thought about it this way. I figured tips were somehow split between the workers and they’d get that money in addition to their hourly pay.

The more I think about it the more strange it is. Why are customers asked for a tip before their food is served?

I hope that millennials will make tipping go away. Most businesses (Starbucks, Target, Safeway, etc) seem to run just fine without asking for tips. And tipping just servers at a restaurant seems grossly unfair to all the other restaurant workers (dishwashers, cooks, etc.)

@JoB , we only have the one kiddo who is now 2 years old but my wife is only a couple of credits shy of her AA (can wrap those up at the community college 2 blocks away from our temporary apt) and as soon as she gets TX state residency (1 year of living down there) she’ll be able to get into UAT to get her BA in Linguistic Sciences (They have over 20 languages to specialize in!!!) for less than $6K/semester for full time school which we can afford out of pocket and since childcare is so inexpensive and abundant we can afford to have our daughter covered full-time as well. Night and day difference my friend. There is no possible way shy of winning the lottery we could afford that at UW. :(

The tips is just the owner deferring wage costs directly to the customer rather than through the cost of items. Employers are allowed to pay under the Seattle minimum wage as long as the difference is made up in tips. In instances like this I assume that the owner is splitting the tips so that all workers make the minimum wage (which would have to be paid regardless of tipping).

I agree with all of that. I’ve always thought Pecado Bueno was a bit overpriced for a place that doesn’t provide full service, especially considering the other Mexican and Mexican-inspired options nearby. I usually do tip at places like that, but less than I would at a full-service place. I also find it presumptuous for places to be “asking” for tips before the meal has been served, as is the case with counter service. Again, a smaller amount for that.

I am interested in the part-time job. I am retiring from my accounting job after 25 years and want to do something that is different and enjoyable. I have worked with numbers for too long and would prefer not to do that kind of work anymore. I will not be available until June 1 but would like to be considered for this or future jobs.

    My work history:
J.R. Policar CPA, PS – June 1994 to August 2014
I worked as an accounting assistant doing bookkeeping and tax returns.
Bancroft Buckley Johnston & Serres LLP – August 2014 to present
This position is the same as with J.R. Policar CPA because the Policar company was bought out by BBJS. I would prefer that my current employer not be contacted without letting me know ahead of time.

I can supply other work history and/or references if needed.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

My family enjoys the food at Pecado Bueno in the Alaska Junction. I pay with a credit card, and the charge slip has a line where the customer can write in a tip and total then sign. Am I supposed to tip at a restaurant like Pecado Bueno? You (the customer) order at a counter. You fill your own drinks (unless alcohol.) You get your own fork and spoon. After the meal you bus your table and place the dirty dishes in a tub. So I suppose the tip goes to all the hard-working folks in the kitchen, taking orders, and cleaning. But it gives me some pause because I thought tips were traditionally for the server who takes your order, refills your drink, and cleans your table after the meal.
I really, really, really wish every restaurant would simply adjust the price of food so the employees were paid adequately and the customer wouldn’t be left in an uncomfortable situation of trying to figure out whether tips were required to get the employees to be paid the correct amount of wages. At a minimum, I wish tipping was reserved for full-service restaurants where, theoretically at least, tips are a reward for prompt service. Though I wish that would go away too.
I guess what I’m saying is I don’t like the idea of tips at all because as a customer I don’t know whether staff is paid adequately or not. But I get especially confused when there is a line for a tip at a restaurant in which the customer orders at a counter and there is not a server.
I don’t want to stop eating at Pecado Bueno because I like the restaurant and the food. Just wondering if customers are expected to leave a tip there or not.

The one in a million factor reminds me of the controversy over MSG, an old seasoning (of Japanese origin) that people seem to narrowly associate with Chinese food and claim it’s some kind of poison or allergen.

Many of us work wierd hours with really early wake-up times. We are also suceptable to coffee addiction. There is nothing more agravating than waking up just a little but earlier to grab that cup of coffee and finding the coffee shop closed without a hint of opening hours posted.

I have asked the staff at both the Adimiral & Juntion Starbucks & the reply has been a shrug & “it’s corporate”.

I feel stupid telling Starbucks this: Coffee. It’s a morning thing! Are you still in the morning business?!!! I can’t think of a dumber business strategy as ticking off your loyal customers by not posting hours in a visible location. Get a clue!
