1. Despite the Times article, Dino is not really a successful business man, he is a successful real estate investor. There is little to no evidence he has ever run a business.

2. The skill set to be a Governor and a Senator are very very different. The Governor is basically the CEO of the state, they pick department heads, hire and fire and quarterback budget issues. Senators represent the state in legislative issues and negotiations on a national level while trying to also do whats best for the state he/she represents. Its tough to say Dino can represent me when he is anti-choice, anti-family and pro-big business. Most in Western Washington are pro-choice, pro-family and pro-consumer. If I have to pick someone who I think will best represent my values, its not Dino.

3. Had you spent more time with FIB’s you would know its ok to vote early and vote often, tha’ts just the way its done. I am sorry one of my friends stole your gf back in high school….

Useless Trivia. No. History. It shows that people and governments can make a small decision that can start a trend. Government is needed to keep the free market relatively fair. But when governments make bad decisions, we are all hurt.

You can also blame Tobacco for this too. Since owners wanted to stop training new indentured servants they found a way to enslave people.

Racism, I look more at individuals and “their content of character” more so than just the color of their skin. Fortunately when I was young a black person straightened me out quickly on stereotypes. I haven’t done my research but I have a question. When a state has passed an income tax, has it stayed at the original rate?

Here’s some “useless” trivia. Once enacted the Federal tax rate in 1913 for the wealthy started at 7%. In five years it shot up to 77%. During WWII it ended up at around 94% for earners making $1,000,000.00.

I have a feeling that politicians cannot leave well enough alone. Rhode Island started an income tax in 1971 and now it is the fifth highest (from History in Wikipedia). More “useless” trivia JoB.

My son takes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from Cindy at Sleeper Athletics and I couldn’t be more happy with the program. Cindy is so good with the kids and my son has learned so much. Currently he is learning Jiu Jitsu, but Cindy also teaches Boxing and Wrestling.

I am so impressed with how she works with children of all ages and sizes and they all seem to get something great out of each lesson. And there are so many opportunities to get to a class. There is something going on almost every day. Cindy is totally family oriented and often times parents train with her too.

My son was very shy and kinda wimpy when he started and was very emotional. He has changed so much since then and I cannot believe how confident and happy he is now.

I just can’t believe such a program exists and the price is very reasonable. It’s only $100 a month. I wanted to let everyone know about this over here in West Seattle because I would like to get some carpooling going. Sleeper Athletics is in Georgetown in the Tully’s building.

Anyways, Cindy said she would offer a discount to West Seattle people to give it a try. It’s only $50 a month for the first 2 months. And the first class is always free. Smitty and Carson: Sometimes it’s hard for me to divine the points you’re trying to make through all the sarcasm.

Anyway, Smitty, what exactly do you think the graph you linked to shows? I believe you’re offering these stats as proof that Obama is exacerbating the recession, but to me, this inverted bell curve suggests that Obama is gradually pulling us out of slump that Bush got us into. (Take another look. Can you see the correlation there?)

Personally, I don’t believe there’s that strong of a correlation between presidents and employment levels, but even if I did believe in such a correlation, this graph shows that unemployment is coming down steadily under Obama. Is that what you wanted to us to take away from this?

Wow. This has taken a turn.

First off, my post had everything to do with this situation/request (ref post 22). I have no problem sharing memories of a person. Its the sharing of DETAILS that could connect this person to her family, even via a small seemingly irrelevant detail – that I’m concerned with and was trying to get across. I’m not even talking about addresses, names, etc which obviously the moderators would remove. But ‘inconsequential’ details are still details about a family. I urge caution.

That said, I find it interesting I get called out on post 22 for making this about ‘my story’ when in fact it was about my experiences and beliefs being stated as a way to relate concerns – which those who call me out have done countless times on this site as a way to relate.

And now one of those I cautioned about is reeling and the other hasnt even chimed in, my point being made. In situations like this – and TOPICS like this, people need err on being cautious and conservative as you dont know who you are really speaking to!

Its not comparable to asking for information about restaurants or window cleaners. This is completely different. I would think that some of those who’ve shared intimate details about their lives as reference would understand that.

Had Aurora Edmonds out here on the 8th and they were very careful and thorough. They use a truck-mounted system that i experienced first hand…. almost lost my hand;) the guy told me he sucked up a wharf rat once. once of those times you want something to “suck”. price seemed reasonable. Don’t be misled by the coupons that come in the mail that say $95 whole house. not likely as powerful and when i researched them, they had bad reports.

See, I told you so! And, I “ignored” her.

I can tell you what happened. My Seattle Times route started on the little side street that you can turn off on just before entering the West Seattle Freeway from the south. Its just north of Yasuko’s. The route went down to the corner, left, and over the pedestrian overpass. On the other side of the freeway, my sister had a West Seattle Shopping News route. She did not have to collect for that route. They just paid her to deliver it.

On that particular day, it was a very cold and rainy day. She was waiting for me to come over the overpass. She did not want to finish her route. She helped me finish mine. When we got to 33rd Ave. SW and Charlestown, we walked down to Fauntleroy & Charlestown and crawled over the metal railing and down along the chainlink fence. It is right above the southern turn in the West Seattle Freeway as it approaches West Seattle.

We started tossing the Shopping News into the blackberry bushes. I had to urinate, so I went down a trail while my sister finished with the papers. The trail ran along the top of a ravine. I walked to the end of the trail and urinated on a tree stump. As I headed back up the trail. I noticed a pair of legs. It looked like someone was laying on the side of the ravine. It wasn’t until I got further up the trail that I noticed the rope suspended from a tree root at the top of the ravine.

I did not see Penny’s face, her back was to me. She had on blue bell bottoms, a gold jacket and a blue knit hat. To be honest, it looked like a young boy. She was only 14 or 15 at the time. My sister started to come down the trail looking for me and I just started screaming for her not to come down. I ran up the hills to my house and told my mom. She was making dinner and did not believe me. She told me to tell my father. He was having one of his “War and Peace” moments in the restroom. I was literally jumping up and down in place waiting for him to come out of the bathroom.

He and I went back down and I showed him what I had found. He crawled down the hill and checked. He confirmed that it was indeed a person. We went back up to 33rd Ave. S.W. and went to the first house we could find. There was an invalid in the house. We were talking to her through the mail slot in her door. We kept asking her to call the police and she kept yelling that if we didn’t leave she would call the police. It would have been funny if it were not so tragic.

When the police showed up, it was a cruiser at first. When he saw what we had found, he called the detectives. They questioned my father and I. They also undressed Penny while she was still hanging as the coroner hadn’t shown up yet. They found that it was a girl, not a boy, and that she had bite marks and cigarette burns on her torso.

The police let us go, but not before my mom stopped by, on her way to a fundraiser. to see how we were doing. When we got home, I did not sleep for four days. My parents had a king sized bed and I sat in between them until I finally passed out from exhaustion. My trauma lasted less than a week. The Haddenham family’s lasted much longer. I feel very lucky that I was able to bring Penny home. Her family had closure. They were able to bury their daughter and prosecute the suspect.

James Ruzicka had also raped and murdered Nancy Kinghammer. The Explorer Scouts found her body in what was an empty lot across from the piano store on Avalon Way. The property is a condominium now. However, at the time, Ruzicka had buried her in a carpet he’d brought from his ex-wife’s house and also under a log. He went back and raped her every two or three days after she was dead.

It took a year, but my father and I testified at his trial. He was convicted. I am very happy for my part in the entire incident. No one can challenge my motives. I brought the neighbor girl who used to play with our poodles home.

The ability to connect through the internet is both a wonderful and frightening thing… it is wonderful that you can make connections that would have previously been impossible and frightening that sometimes people are not who they seem.

I have chosen to assume my internet connections with strangers are as genuine as my in person connections with strangers…

TOBY SPOTTED LATE THIS AFTERNOON!

Toby was seen this afternoon around the 7800 block and 45th Ave SW greenbelt (near the Fauntleroy tennis courts/Circle K). He skittishly approached a man trying to help, but fled when a passerby with a barking dog approached.

Last night he was headed up Delridge over to Dawson, up to 18th. This morning he was seen back down at Alki. The last 2/3 days he has been on the bluff above Alki at Atlantic and 46th on the one side, and Ferry & Massachusettes on the other.

Toby appears healthy but is terrified. Please do not leave food out for him. Rescuers will be setting out a humane trap(s)and will be luring him there with food in the traps. If other food is available, it will make it harder to capture him and get him to safety. This is how another lost dog in West Seattle was caught after weeks on the run.

I am not able to attach Toby’s flier to this email, so please contact me directly if you would like it or can possibly help leave one at the households in the 7800 block of 45th Ave SW and the neighborhoods around the greenbelt. Any help is truly appreciated to get this boy home!

What if the businesses owner took a $250,000 salary, sold a $500,000 building, had $100,000 in dividend income and a spouse who earned $150,000?

The money left in the business is taxed at a different rate than you say. It’s taxed on the total amount of income. That’s why marginal rates and total income matter.

And you cannot deduct the 1098 tax paid to the state from your next year’s state income tax. Income taxes paid are not business expenses at the state level.

You don’t even get a full tax shield.

If you have $1M profit at the end of 2010, you pay $90,000 tax.

If you reach into your personal account to refill $90,000 cash back into the business to invest it the following year year (assuming you don’t buy capital assets that are depreciated vs expensed) you get a 9% tax shield on the $90,000 you ponied up. That’s $8,100. You do not get your $90,000 back from the government. At best you save 9%.

Yes, cyclists should exercise caution and yield to pedestrians on sidewalks and shared paths when use is truly mixed. I’m a bit confused here though. There is no “cycle path” on the roadway infront of ActivSpace on Harbor. There are only sharrows. Many cyclists do not feel comfortable riding on the street with motor vehicles so choose the path.

The “sidewalk” in front of ActivSpace IS the designated bike path…it’s difficult to access the bike route from Harbor to the Spokane Street intersection/lower bridge from the street via bicycle. Not impossible, but difficult. Once one is cycling on the path, it’s safer to remain on the path to get to the lower bridge rather than cross Harbor traffic 2x. When cycling from Spokane Street, it’s safer for a cyclist to remain on the path rather than use the crosswalk to join traffic on Harbor (it’s a blind right turn by cars who rarely stop on a red light before making a right turn, and drivers have a difficult time seeing peds/cyclists due to the barrier blocking their vision in the first place).

I don’t know many cyclists who have an issue with dogs. I know many cyclists who have an issue with dog owners not keeping their dog on a short leash on a shared path/sidewalk.

The road is not for daredevils, but for cyclists with the skills and knowledge to ride them. More experience makes cyclists more comfortable on the streets. So does less aggressive traffic. I often choose to ride the shared path along Harbor/Alki because it’s a nice break from worrying about drivers of motor vehicles.

There are signs at ActivSpace warning cyclists to slow down. I am one who does. Sadly, not everyone understands the function of a shared path.

Not trying to nitpick, but the tax rate paid on income left in a business depends on total income, not just the amount left in.

So assuming the business owner makes more than $0 in take home, dividends, capital gains, etc, then your calculations understate the tax. And again, marginal rates matter in business decisions.

I didn’t read any intent to mislead there, in fact Mark was pretty clear to assume the owner was above the 9% threshold.

As to your “write off” point-

Once the government collects the tax, it is gone forever. You cannot get it back.

The $1 million dollars profit left in the business is going to be net of investments you made from money left in the prior year. Just like the profits left in at the end of the next year will be net of investments made that year.

You could, in theory, blow all of your profits every year so you owe no taxes. But you’d have no business, no cash to pay employees on Jan 1, and the state would collect no 1098 tax from business owners.

“Lying” and “idiot” are pretty strong assertions, especially when Mark’s example is accurate.

But if you want to disagree on tax 101 and fundamental business principles, that’s ok. Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

I get it. Thanks for clarifying.

But, even then, you’re wrong. Mark clearly asked us to assume that “a company leaves $1 million profit in the business at the end of the year to open a new location . . .” In that case the company would be taxed at 3% effective. Even if he meant 2 million, it would only be taxed at a 6% effective rate.

And even that isn’t entirely true. Because the business owner could write off whatever amount he paid in taxes the following year when he turned around and spent it on his business. So again, Mark is either lying or an idiot.

Perhaps he should get a tax accountant to explain it to him: you know, like the tax accountants who helped write the initiative to make sure that wealthy business owners couldn’t evade the income tax.

W/ re to the lists, the ones I remember seeing them advertised in other communities, and they were distributed through the schools etc, and I believe they only listed address, so no critical info for scammers and telemarketing agencies (but still seemed to make parents feel safer). Neither here nor there–porchlight is obviously easier. I’m just thrilled to know that kids are out strolling the neighborhoods w/ parents in tow. My daughter’s too young to go, but I’m really looking forward to taking her out as soon as she is old enough.

I’m confused. It sounds like you live in the Schmitz Park assignment area, but you arrived before the new rules went into effect, so your child was assigned to a different school (Gatewood)?

The way I understand the new system, now you are ALWAYS able to have your child attend your assignment area school; they are required to make room for every child in the assignment area.

Have you spoken with the principals at both schools about this? Have you escalated your question to the Superintendent’s office?

Bottom line though: your child will not be able to “swap spots” with another child. As a parent who waited anxiously with a child on a school waiting list, I’m offended by the very idea that someone would seek to circumvent the system (flawed or not) in this way, and I have to believe that the school principals and central administration would not allow you to do so.
