megMemberCount me in! Would love a queer west seattle social group–summer cookouts or deck drinks or potlucks– and then see what the interest is. PS-Shibaguyz-enjoy your blog & am totally interested in the intensive gardening! We are just in the early stages here at our place!

jMemberI’m a 5th grade teacher (in Bellevue) and I wish there where more multiple choice questions on the WASL. My poor kids struggle year after year because the Science WASL is practically all writing.
To find out about the types of questions, go to OSPI, not Wikipedia. You can see released questions for every grade. There are three types of questions on the WASL:
-Multiple Choice (1 point)
-Short Answer (2 points)
-Extended Response (4 points)
I could go on for days about the pros and cons so I’ll spare everyone.

jMemberI don’t know if the breakfast is good, but I just found out that the Celtic Swell on Alki serves breakfast. Has anyone tried their breakfast?
May 27, 2008 at 3:36 am #5870551inhidingParticipantMy wife and I were walking around the neighborhood today, and noticed several brown spots all over the streets around the Gatewood Hill neighborhood. Apparently the truck that made garbage pickup this morning was leaking something…and it ain’t spring fresh! I can only wait for the next big rainstorm and hope it washes away (though I hate to think that it will simply wash into the storm drains)

AnonymousInactiveOK, but I have no idea where any one at the park lives and I really don’t want to follow them home. There’s many different streets that join up with the playfields. If they actually lived on my street I would know them personally. I should be more clear that it is directed at any one who lets there dog run off leash. And it’s generally someone different every day.
I will chill though, and let animal control take care of it. Sorry.

KayleighMemberEr, the title of the forum section is “rants and raves.” It seems to me that this is a reasonable place to rant or vent about things that annoy us without having armchair cyberpsychoanalysis.
Not wanting to confront a stranger with a possibly aggressive dog doesn’t strike me as “passive-aggressive”, a term which is getting overused, IMO. It’s reasonable to avoid conflict in certain situations and vent or talk it out later.
May 27, 2008 at 3:21 am #622235In reply to: RANT: Highpoint dog owners
barmargiaMemberJT, I think the problem with some of your rant is that you are directing it towards one person that you see all the time, who lives in your neighborhood and who you witness doing these things to. If you are just ranting in general about random people that would be one thing. But in your situation you have a face and a location of where this person lives, I’m not suggesting you go directly to these people but if it is bothering you this bad then call authorities on them. Just ranting directly to them in the hopes that they are reading this blog does seem pretty passive aggressive. Like you don’t want to report them to authorities, but you want everyone reading this to know that you are concerned enough that you noticed it and it pisses you off.

MargLMemberI’ve thought about taking my 2 yr old to one of the messy play days at CSWS.
It makes me a little nervous about safety that they post a picture like this http://communityschoolwestseattle.org/img/photos/CSWS1.jpg on their home page.
The co-op preschool we’re going to now teaches it’s not OK to climb on the tables and it’s not OK to build towers so high that they might fall on another child.

AnonymousInactiveVincent, have I pissed you off for some reason? Didn’t you just spend a week complaining about how car drivers treat bike riders? I’m sure, like me, your intent was to bring the topic to the widest possible audience. Sometimes the group weighing in, causes change of behavior.
And as much as I’d like to live at the park and speak to each and every person, I’m not sure how to logistically go about that. Other people have also mentioned the same actions at their neighborhood parks and I’m only one person. I’ve placed service requests but the animal shelter can’t be everywhere at all times.
Responsible dog owners take the blame for irresponsible dog owners. It becomes frustrating at times. If my emotion bothers you I apologize and would ask that you stick to another thread.

vincentMemberYay! passive aggressive people rule! Way to complain on the internet when you could either talk to the neighbor in question, or call the authorities yourself.
NOWAY MAN THATS TOO EASY, COMPLAINING ON A BLOG IS WAY BETTER.
May 27, 2008 at 12:53 am #622232In reply to: RANT: Highpoint dog owners
AnonymousInactiveAll my *special* friends are still walking off leash at the Highpoint park/elementary, so I thought I’d bump this to the top again. I’m not good with breeds but one dog looks like a black Akita in size, shape. I thought it was especially sweet how you trespassed into the construction site and let your dog run all over the debris. That looked safe.
I’m still waiting for you to explain why rules don’t apply to (all of) you. Maybe I’m just not understanding your superior importance. I’m probably risking your wrath by reporting you again, but I have no tolerance for public rudeness.

SueParticipantJust an FYI, I found out that True Value in the junction DOES do screen repair/replacement. I saw the sign there yesterday at their service desk and he said that he thought that pretty much only he and McLendons do this type of work in the area. I ran back today with the screen and he said we’ll have it by Wednesday and should cost $13 or so. Now if only I could find the squirrel that did this and make him pay. :)

WSBKeymasterYeah, thought I had the search nut cracked a few nights ago and not quite there, but it’s still in the works. Nobody’s mentioned Easy Street? If we get to go out to breakfast, that’s where we go. Especially because you can have lunch for breakfast if you want! (or breakfast for lunch, for that matter) … TR

jissyParticipantAim– I know Herban Feast just moved out of Admiral down to the old Herban Pottery bldg on 1st Avenue South, SoDo district — I believe the purpose was to have a space AND on-site catering. BJ and staff are amazing and the food always incredible although it might be on the pricey side.

Well done Austin!

feydrasMemberMy 4yo and 6yo go there, the latter in the K-2 class. We love the school and feel strongly a part of its community.
The teachers of the K-2 class, Michelle and Paul, are consistently compassionate and encouraging while still feeling human and approachable. The kids steer much of the learning in the class by choosing topics and asking questions interesting to them. The best way to get an idea of what the class is like is probably to check out the K-2’s blog…
http://thelivingclassroom.wordpress.com/
Our 4yo’s class has gone through a rockier year with some teacher changes although the principal Sara has been a steady support and presence throughout. My 4yo loves school and is eager to move into the ‘big kid’ K-2 class.
We also have a 2yo who we plan on sending to CSWS. Most schools ask for parent involvement but the community of parents and teachers at CSWS make it fun to be involved.
AnonymousInactiveaustin, hella cool. Thank-you.

May 26, 2008 at 8:12 pm #625223In reply to: WASL/School Standards
beachdrivegirlParticipantI think what you are forgetting is that although typically the WASL does have multiple choice answers the multiple choice is worth significantly less than the short answer and extended response questions. Furthermore, the WASL test high failure rate typically has to do with students who have english as a second language. The WASL test is a very inaccurate assessment of education level, IMO. My father is on the school board, my brother in law is a principal, and my mother and sister are teachers and they all share the opinion that the WASL is very inaccurate in its measurements. However, I do love hearing that you do care so much about your education not enough students do these days.

I know it’s not WS, but Saturday we went for breakfast at Randy’s down by Boeing field. $4.50 for breakfast! It was really good, and that place is full of kitschy history.
