WSBKeymasterWe’re still wading through four days of downloaded reports for summaries we’ll wind up posting in an hour or so. Haven’t come across this one yet. The relatively new computerized reporting system police are using means their reports take more time (and it takes more time for us to go through them too) and sometimes, I’m noticing, aren’t making it into the public releases for a couple days, because they have to be reviewed and approved by supervisors first. — TR

ShibaguyzMemberJeannie – the raw food we mix in with their kibble is from Skagit River Ranch, the same place we get our local meat from. So they are only eating about 50% local. ;)

PSPSParticipantAbout the same time, I noticed one cop car at the corner of 41st and Dakota just sitting at the corner with his rooftop lights going. Occasionally, he’d drive into the school’s playground and sit there for a while shining his spotlight around. Then he’d go back to the corner for a while.
I presumed it was part of a “containment.”

bcollinsMemberYeah! Actually, a great set of folks were out there the day after I posted. Some neighbor friends saw them out there (joined in) and called me. My wife and I joined in. I’ll probably have some bark delivered to keep the weeds down.

May 28, 2008 at 3:47 am #625229In reply to: WASL/School Standards
CaduceusMemberWow, lots of responses!
I’m overjoyed to see teachers and parents are active on here! :]
I simply brought up the WASL because it is grossly apparent that most teachers teach so their students will pass the WASL and not necessarily teach their students anything they will be able to use later on.
And because of this, if the WASL was changed to include things we as students and young people would be able to use in what should be our college-oriented goals then I speculate we would be seeing our community grow more constructively.
Now I understand college isn’t the goal for everyone, but it should be.
In this country especially, education is entirely dependent on how you will fair in life. (granted there are some exceptions.)
I do believe it’s safe to say most people don’t enjoy living pay check to pay check or having to deal with stressful money issues frequently.
A college degree will greatly increase an individuals professional opportunities, and higher degrees will open even more doors.
Now not to say you’re screwed without a college degree a lot of people get by just fine and live comfortably, but a large majority of the people with financial troubles do not have a college degree or even a high school diploma.
I will not touch on the subject of ESL students simply because that is an entirely different basket, and may spark bad feelings as that is a testy subject. But I will say this, and bare with me. I think it is un-fair to lower the standards for the children of families who have lived in this country for generations and speak English as their first language, because we have heavy immigration and the people who have English as a second language have a difficult time keeping up. Yes, I am aware that that is not the only cause for lowered standards. I am conscious of the average teachers ludicrously poor pay (in comparison to what it should be, which needs to be changed immediately), the often restricted budgets for individual schools (in terms of where they are placed and the ethnicity of that neighborhood). Etc
But I do suppose it isn’t fair to put all the blame on the school district. The lack of a child’s drive can be blamed on the parents I guess. But in High School, if a young-adult wishes to act like a child and has similar goals to a child then that is his or hers conscious decision and hardly reflects directly on their parents or the school district.
Our society as a whole needs a change of mentality, entirely.
We need to cease to be dependent on religion, entertainment, media (don’t even get me started on the news stations), traditional ideals, greed etc.
And begin to create a society based on co-existence and constructiveness.
Which seems to be a distant dream now-a-days which it probably is but it isn’t impossible.
And I believe a more useful education in a more constructive environment will help us get there that much faster.

May 28, 2008 at 3:01 am #622248In reply to: RANT: Highpoint dog owners
AnonymousInactiveI read back and saw where JT DID say something to the dog owner. She yelled at them to get their dog on a leash. The owner didn’t care, so JT came to the forum and let it be known that this owner is breaking the law (there are dog leash laws here, right?).
That is what a “rant” is, I thought (can’t believe that Kayleigh and I actually agree on something).
Anyways, read back from the beginning of this thread if you need to.
Nothing JT has posted is out of line for a “rant” thread (or passive/aggressive, for that matter. She did more than I would have by yelling something!)

changingtimesMemberthis didnt look like the normal police traps for drunk driving! i live on 42nd and there was two cops posted on either end of the block, i decided to go hang out at my friends house on 50th just in case the would-be-suspects were chillin in my backyard or garage. She lives on 50th, and saw 3 more cops on the way down. weird, but i guess there was nothing on the news so didnt look like anything had gone on…..and when i got home 1/2 hour later they were gone…

JiggersMemberI know most of the officers here in WS and happy to see them making their rounds to the bars and not letting it become troubled spots. I only need to walk to any place I need to go and not worry about the police and driving home drunk. You deserve to get caught if you drive drunk.

barmargiaMemberJT, I’m sorry if you think pointing something out is “hostility” on my part, and thanks for the snotty “you sure have put me in my place” comment, I’m guessing that when you wanted to rant you just wanted people to agree with you. I didn’t yell at you, I didn’t call you names, I just posted my observation, but I guess that I’m being hostile because I didn’t jump on your side.
I apologize for not noting the date of the original post
