My daughter is enrolled to start in September as a 4 year old. Just wondering if any parents out there are currently sending their children there and what your comments are about the school.

What do you think about the K-2 class? Any experience with that classroom??

My 4yo and 6yo go there, the latter in the K-2 class. We love the school and feel strongly a part of its community.

The teachers of the K-2 class, Michelle and Paul, are consistently compassionate and encouraging while still feeling human and approachable. The kids steer much of the learning in the class by choosing topics and asking questions interesting to them. The best way to get an idea of what the class is like is probably to check out the K-2’s blog…

Our 4yo’s class has gone through a rockier year with some teacher changes although the principal Sara has been a steady support and presence throughout. My 4yo loves school and is eager to move into the ‘big kid’ K-2 class.

We also have a 2yo who we plan on sending to CSWS. Most schools ask for parent involvement but the community of parents and teachers at CSWS make it fun to be involved.

I’ve thought about taking my 2 yr old to one of the messy play days at CSWS.

It makes me a little nervous about safety that they post a picture like this http://communityschoolwestseattle.org/img/photos/CSWS1.jpg on their home page.

The co-op preschool we’re going to now teaches it’s not OK to climb on the tables and it’s not OK to build towers so high that they might fall on another child.

Margl-want to reassure you that children are not allowed to haphazardly jump up onto tables and crush people under towers-the long legs in the picture you refference is a teacher who is fully participating in the project and these are 4 year olds who are discovering height, width, structure, form, balance, team work, concentration, trust and risk taking. All part of a days work at CSWS. Your welcome to visit, just give them a call.

jkboison,Our family has had a very positive experience at CSWS. Our 3 1/2 yo daughter started in 9/07 and has really blossomed there. Her teachers are kind, thoughtful and incredibly creative. Such a variety of learning experiences presented. Sometimes I have a hard time leaving in the morning b/c I want to watch the kids as they explore their environment. I also love how much time they spend outside. I’m also a big fan of the year-round schedule.

All that said, I also believe that different kids have different needs, and CSWS may not be the right place for everyone. We originally started at the Cottage School at Gatewood and lasted about 2 weeks. Just not the right place for our daughter.
