“Bottom line is that a political statement is being made during the national anthem. I think that’s inappropriate.”

Thank you. Statement one is a fair reading of what’s happening during the anthem and statement two is a true statement of your opinion, to which you are roundly entitled.

“Here on this particular forum, I am outnumbered and outshouted.”

Well, there are certainly people who disagree with your opinion. I guess if we go back and count up the posts there may be more that disagree than agree. Characterizing it as being “outnumbered and outshouted” gives it a bit of the Trumpesque “this debate is rigged” feel, but I’m sure no one meant to hurt your feelings.

I use Win 7 with Firefox. I have noticed the blog is loading way slower the last few months than it used to. I think it has to do with all the fancy features added in the upgrade. There is a lot of data to download on the main page. I have 50MB broadband download speed, so it can’t be to connection. It is a bit annoying but I have learned to deal with it.

Well I also play internet radio on iTunes at the same time. Recently a friend told me that iTunes runs extra programs in the background and uses up resources (I can’t explain it technically.) So I wonder if that is an issue as well. It’s just odd. The WSB is the only site that have this issue with so far. Maybe it is resource heavy. I appreciate all the comments thus far. ~z

I’m going to dissent with Comcast being the better choice. There have been outages with both services, sure (although my Comcast TV has gone out while my Centurylink internet keeps ticking). I also had a frustrating fiber install experience with Centurylink where appointments kept getting pushed back and it took me a while to figure out the appropriate vlan settings to get rid of the “modem rental”.

At the same time, I’ve got internet-only Centurylink’s 40 mbit service for $36.94 this month and for the next ~two years. Except for youtube taking longer to buffer before playing, I’m happy with this price point.

It’s true, the flag is a symbol for the nation. It is not a symbol for the various Armed Forces who all have their own flag.
As symbolic of the nation, it represents the collective spirit of those who have fought and died to protect the country; those who fought and died to oppress and destroy others; those who committed acts of civil disobedience to gain the right to vote, to end segregation, to end discrimination based on gender, sexual preference; ordinary people who work hard and try to raise families. There is a positive spirit that underlies all of that and it is aspirational. To insist it honors only military service is at best incomplete. At worst, it is vulgar nationalism.
So Kaepernick has made clear he believes the national tolerance for racial injustice is not in keeping with the true spirit of this nation and we need to do something about it so everyone can feel genuinely included in a positive way by the American spirit. Another way of looking at it is to say it’s a call to purge the negative, mean-spirited, selfish forces in society that perpetuate racism, but I’d rather accentuate the positive.

It’s clear his call has struck a chord with men and women playing sports at the professional, college and high school level. So now people who are uncomfortable with this ugly side of our country and would prefer to ignore it are being invited to take a closer look. That’s good. Very good.

To get a look at how revolutionary this is, take a look at this website and watch the video of a Nebraska Cornhusker who has set off a discussion about racial injustice, patriotism, and civil disobedience in a state of people largely tone deaf about racism. He’s having a meeting with the governor next week to discuss his protest, a meeting that will be widely covered by the state and possibly some national press. Go Big Red

If you or anyone else reading this qualifies as low income- collecting unemployment, receives food stamps or other assistance, on Medicaid/Medicare etc. You probably will qualify for a great internet deal that will cost you only $10/month. Take a look at http://www.interconnection.org

I have a hotspot through them, Sprint carrier and it works great!

For quite some time now, I have been having problems viewing comments on the WSB via Mozilla Firefox browser. Some days I can quickly take a look and get out of the comments. But most days after being in the comments–particularly the topics with more comments, something happens. I notice that scrolling down gets “jumpy”, then suddenly my browser freezes. Sometimes, I can start exiting the Blog and shut down Firefox. But often even after closing the WSB browser window and the tab with comments, my other Firefox windows that are open in the background start to freeze. Then at that point it becomes difficult to shut down FF and my computer locks up. I have to force a restart.

I view a number of blogs and sites using Firefox through the course of the day, but this only seems to occur with the West Seattle Blog. Does anyone else notice this problem? I am writing this post from Internet Explorer. I prefer using Mozilla, but use IE as a back up occasionally. (Note: I am on a PC using Windows 7.) Thanks, ~z

clark…I can’t recommend if you want to see someone in West Seattle. My PCP is a female doc at the Polyclinic(7th and Madison) named Betsy Brown. She has been my doc a good portion of the time since 2004. I had no insurance back then…she found a way to have my right hip replaced, and while I was recovering , she got me a free mammogram , where, sadly, they discovered I had breast cancer. She went to Santa Fe for a bit, but missed Seattle and came back, so I’m seeing her again. She also teaches at the U. I can’t say enough good things about her. I feel like she saved my life by getting me a free mammogram. Good luck on your search :)

So far as I know, you have just two choices: Comcast or Clink. You will find several threads on this site describing just how bad Century Link service has become. Comcast is the better choice. I recommend dropping the land line and opting for their cheapest version of broadband.

cool. let’s go back to the original post on the issue…

“The Star-Spangled Banner is one of a few symbols of the country. The bald eagle and the flag itself are others. They do not represent a specific administration or policy, but rather the country as a whole.”

Purely the opinion of the poster. There are no laws, decrees, or passages in the Constitution (or anywhere else) dictating how Americans must respond to a national anthem or that we even need one. We never voted on the song. It was made the national anthem by a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931. The resolution followed the presentation of a petition for, and a presentation of testimony against by musicians and singers who held that the song was too difficult to sing.

“So when a protest strikes against the anthem, it is against the country.”

    This is nonsense.

“It’s the same as burning a flag, except there won’t be charges of arson. I doubt Kaepernick and others meant that, but it’s what they’re saying.”

More nonsense. Plus, the poster doesn’t seem to understand the protest has nothing to do with the anthem other than using its playing as an opportunity to focus attention on the issues that the protest IS actually about. It has no relationship to flag burning (which is also legal, BTW), and it’s not what Kaepernick and others are saying. Misrepresentation and misunderstanding on the part of the OP.

“Kaepernick’s decided he’s sufficiently upset about an issue to pitch a public fit about it. Fine, he should find himself a venue and say his piece.”

He did. He’s a highly paid entertainer that has a huge audience and if you want to make a statement and have an impact, a smart person will take that opportunity.

“But the anthem isn’t a venue available for the taking, and those who stand on a public stage and disregard it send a message quite different from the one they probably intended.”

More opinion with no basis in fact. The fact that this protest has inspired much discussion, pro and con, on the issues it is actually addressing means the message is getting thru. Not to people who think the protest is about the anthem, though.

any possibility of setting aside the wrangling over slights and indignation and get back to discussing the actual issue? There are very important developments taking place throughout the country in regard to the national anthem protests which I think are worth discussing more than determining who’s naughty and who’s nice. I’ve tried to post variations on this theme three times today without success, so perhaps I’m just not getting it and the cyber gods are letting me know. So I guess this serves as a test.

Similar scenario by us yesterday afternoon. I was able to turn the young (20-ish) male away easily enough, but aspects of his pitch and presentation didn’t feel right> And I’ve heard of other encounters with these folks that were not resolved without anxiety or hostility. I wish I’d examined his vendor badge, which he seemed to have but was kind of tucked out of sight.
