perseo…
one of the difficulties with confessions is that a suspect will often tell you whatever story they think you want to hear just to end the interrogation.
i don’t know if that is what happened here.
I can’t even begin to state what i would have done at Amanda’s age in her circumstances because our life experiences were so different.. by her age i had been exposed to more than a young girl should. I like to think i would not have done so.. but having never been in that circumstance, i don’t know.
Amanda is not solely responsible for what happened to Patrick Lumumba.. the Italian justice system has to take responsibility as well.. jailing someone for two weeks on the basis of a story told by a young woman who is not giving a consistent story is not responsible.
And let’s not even start with the negligence of the Italian press…
What i find most troubling about this entire situation is that the waters were so muddied by the media and by the over-zealous actions of some members of the Italian justice system that it is nearly impossible to sort truth out of the conflicting assumptions.
I don’t claim it is always better here… I can think of many situations where defendants were tried in the public press long before they went to trial… and even after convictions or acquittals.. their guilt or innocence remains controversial.
