Saturday, April 23 (1-3 PM): Introduction to Scratchboard with Katie Wilson
Love to get lost in the details? Scratchboard offers a unique method of precision drawing that is subtractive and can look similar to woodcuts and engravings. The image is created by scratching away a thin layer of black ink with a variety of tools to expose the white substrate. The result can be as detailed as you desire.
In this introductory class you will gain familiarity with the different types of tools, techniques, and materials available for exploring the world of scratchboard art. You will start by practicing how to draw in reverse and then try out different scratch techniques from simple lines to stippling and cross-hatching using a variety of tools. You will gain hands-on experience using both student grade scratch paper and professional grade Ampersand Scratchbord. We will touch on additional ways to enhance your pieces with color and backlighting.
Saturday, April 30 (1-3 PM): Drink-Coaster Cityscapes with Andrew Woods
Create tiny charming coaster paintings while exploring how to capture a complicated scene in a relaxed, expressive mode. Andrew will teach you keys to working in a realistic style without becoming overwhelmed by details, how to relax when working with additive permanent materials like marker/watercolor, a super-power perceptual hack for staying loose and simplifying what you’re looking at, and establishing interest and flow with gradients of detail.
Saturday, May 7 (1-3 PM): Setting Creative Traps (and Falling Into Them) with John Atkins
In this hands-on workshop we will practice setting ourselves up for creative and aesthetic success. Using art supplies easily found around the house (the pantry staples: watercolors, sharpies, crayons etc) we will explore some ways of improvising art from different prompts and methods. Bring any favorite supplies, paper will be provided as will some watercolor sets and such. Plan on doing a bunch of art!
