“Music with a Heart” concert series, sponsored by Alki UCC, presents:

Panama Hotel Jazz” Steve Griggs Ensemble. “Music made from memories”

The show is “music made from memories,” a combination of stories about the Japanese internment during WWII and original jazz compositions by Steve Griggs, performed by a group of very talented musicians–the same musicians who provided the Christmas concert here in December.

Friday, March 11, 7:30 pm
Alki United Church of Christ

A free-will offering of $15 – $20 is suggested; cash and checks (made out to WS Helpine) accepted at the door. Refreshments and treats after the program. All the proceeds from the concert series are used to pay the musicians and to donate to West Seattle Helpline. (The church promotes the series but does not share in the proceeds. Our goal is to reach out to our community and provide something of benefit to our community.)

Special note: One of our very long time members is Ruth Okada, age 97, who was a young woman with two very young children when she and her husband were interned in Idaho. She is currently writing some thoughts to be shared at that concert about that experience and how it has shaped her life. She and her husband, unlike many others, were welcomed back into the West Seattle and Alki UCC community when the war ended, and they were part of a group which was very instrumental in designing and funding and building the sanctuary in the late 50’s where these concerts are held. She also happens to be the member of the church who spoke out in favor of using undesignated memorial funds from a member who died several years ago to acquire a world class concert grand piano to grace our sanctuary.
