That’s the trailer for “Princess Bride,” which has just been announced as the first movie in this year’s West Seattle Summer Outdoor Movies on the Wall series – it’ll be shown in the courtyard between Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) and Dr. Wolff on Saturday night, July 18th. Hundreds of suggestions came in and Hotwire’s Lora Lewis is announcing the first and last movies today – two more tomorrow – and the other two on Thursday, and since WSB is a proud co-sponsor of the Movies on the Wall series, we’re bringing the news to you here first. Now, today’s second announcement – the movie that will end the series:
“Cars” will be the final Movies on the Wall showing August 22nd. So which four movies will be shown inbetween? Check back here tomorrow and Thursday for the announcements, and mark your calendar for every Saturday night July 18-August 22; the movies start at dusk, so the time varies week to week. (Wondering what the events are like? Admission’s free – there are charity raffles with cool prizes – and fundraiser concessions. Here’s one of our stories, with photos, from last year.)

MOVIE CUPCAKES: No matter which of tonight’s big movies you are going to, you’ll see cupcakes. MAKING OF A COVER DOG: We learned recently that one of West Seattle’s best-known canine cuties, Wendy Hughes-Jelen‘s Italian greyhound Sophia, would be appearing on a future cover for WS-based CityDog Magazine– and now (discovered via our Blogs page feed) Wendy has published the story of Sophia’s big day on her website. Melodie Anderson and John Babcock will get married onstage before the “Mamma Mia!” singalong screening, and yet another gift has appeared: Dinah Brein McClellan at the Admiral Theater says Standing Ovation Films has now donated its services to shoot the wedding and related events (including the donated wedding-party dinner at Cafe Revo). YOU, however, do NOT need to bring a gift – just help make sure there’s a good crowd to cheer on Melodie and John – they’re marrying before movietime, 7:30 tonight at The Admiral (tickets $8, available online till a few hours ahead of time, after that, at the door).

Rotarians Bill Fazekas (left) and Ryan Reese split firewood today at YMCA Camp Colman, where the weather held out most of the day. Located on Key Peninsula, Camp Colman has an almost-100-year connection to West Seattle, founded by families in the Fauntleroy area.
Ten Rotarians (and three of their kids) joined forty other volunteers who cleaned winter debris, spread woodchips on trails and prepped camp for schoolgroups and spring campouts. YMCA Camp Colman also offers summer camp and is taking signups now @ www.ymcacampcolman.org If you’re a Camp Colman alumni, you can find a group on Facebook. Also, the annual Goop breakfast is coming up on Saturday, March 28 at the Fauntleroy YMCA.

Our pre-show activities will be the mummy ‘wrap- n-race’. The idea is we’ll have 3 teams of 2-3 people who will wrap a person from head to foot in two rolls of bathroom tissue and then race to a finish line.
And while there’s no charge for admission, just like the Summer outdoor Movies on the Wall, donations will be collected for the West Seattle Food Bank (and for the next two months, those donations count for more than face value, because of the Feinstein Challenge) – and there’ll be a raffle, with entry proceeds benefiting a local nonprofit. You’ll even find treats at the concession stand. Just bring your family, friends, chairs, and be ready for fun – doors will open at 5:30 – the center’s on 42nd SW just south of Genesee (map) – movie’s at 7.
