Video, photos: West Seattle Summer Fest eve, & Art Walk sights

That may be the most exciting sight in the pre-West Seattle Summer Fest hours: Posters at Easy Street for the live music that’s sparked regional buzz – Mudhoney headlining Friday night’s live music (part of a slate on the Alaska stage, east of California, that starts at 6; Mudhoney’s expected after 8). By early Thursday evening, with tents and road barricades up, The Junction already looked like Festival Central:

And the relocated kid-fun zone (in front of Curious Kidstuff) already sports its climbing wall:

That’s a key point to remember about this year’s Summer Fest: The kid zone’s now in the Alaska-Edmunds block; the stage that was at that end of the festival is now the “Alaska” stage by Junction Plaza Park and its fundraising beer garden. There’s still another stage and beer garden on the north end. Individual restaurants/bars are setting up sidewalk cafes, too, like this one:

Elliott Bay spilled out into the street tonight, and like last year, brought in The Bubbleman to enchant kids of all ages – here’s video of his “countdown to bubbles” (and then of course, the bubbles too):

Also happening in The Junction (and elsewhere) Thursday night – the West Seattle Art Walk – check out muralist Jimmy Gersen painting to the beat inside the former north-side-of-Capers space (which as shown here Wednesday will be a video arcade during Summer Fest):

We found live outdoor music too – here’s video of The Spoils playing outside West 5:

Now, to the art. Most of the Art Walk displays are also continuing at the venues through the month, so you can drop by even if you missed it. At Keller Williams Realty, work by Cara Granger Astorquia:

At Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor), artist Karol Sample‘s work:

South of The Junction, at Ventana Construction (WSB sponsor), it’s work by William Hass:

Endolyne Joe’s, another WSB sponsor, like Ventana, just joined the Art Walk starting this month – here’s info on its display:

Look for a separate feature later today on the exhibit at The Kenney. Of course, there’s art aplenty at Summer Fest Friday-Saturday-Sunday as well – look for the Art Dive, organized by Twilight Artist Collective, north of Oregon.

The map for the monthly West Seattle Art Walk keeps getting bigger and bigger – now more than 50 venues are on the list – and tonight they’ll all open their doors to you, from Fauntleroy (where Endolyne Joe’s [WSB sponsor] has joined up) to California SW between Junctions (another WSB sponsor, Ventana Construction, joins the Art Walk starting tonight) to Alki (the Bathhouse) and beyond. 6-9 pm, here’s the map, and browse the WS Art Walk website to find out who’s showing what where. Many venues, as always, are in The Junction, where there’s something extra tonight: Streets close at 6 pm for West Seattle Summer Fest preps. And Elliott Bay sets up its outdoor “beer garden” early (as they reminded this morning via Twitter) – with family entertainment in the street, The Bubbleman expected around 7, like last year!

Before West Seattle’s biggest summertime celebration – the three-day West Seattle Summer Fest (sponsoring, and co-sponsored by, WSB) – takes over The Junction, Friday-Sunday (7/10-7/12), the night before is a celebration all its own: New venues have joined the West Seattle Art Walk this summer – and now there are FIFTY-EIGHT participants all over West Seattle! New venues include WSB sponsors Ventana Construction (between Alaska and Morgan Junctions), Coffee at the Heights (in Sunrise Heights), and Endolyne Joe’s (in Fauntleroy). As you can see from the section of the map shown above (click here to download the entire map, which also includes a list of venues and their addresses), it’s all over West Seattle, from Alki to Fauntleroy, but there’s a special feature for The Junction this time around – since it’s the night before Summer Fest, California will be closed, and you can wander in the street (The Bubbleman will be outside Elliott Bay around 7 pm, like last year). Drop by the other spots too – you will often find snacks and beverages, and meet great people, both entrepreneurs and artists. The official Art Walk website continues to add more info about the specific exhibits (and venues’ own sites have info too, like the big three-show extravaganza at Twilight) – keep an eye on it at westseattleartwalk.blogspot.com.

That’s the Fraternal Order of Eagles Band performing at The Kenney last night during the monthly West Seattle Art Walk. Other sights from along the route:

Twilight Artist Collective celebrated its June group show. (And remember, they’re accepting applications for the Art Dive at West Seattle Summer Fest next month – full details here.) To the south, Curious Kidstuff unveiled its new Curious Art Kids and Curious Party Kids additions:

And in the Admiral District, Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) featured Mixed Greens Blog and celebrated 10 years of the West Seattle Farmers’ Market with rosemary/lavender lemonade, homemade crackers with rhubarb and Beecher’s cheese (second photo), and co-proprietor Frances Smersh‘s cork jewelry:

The West Seattle Art Walk (official site here) adds new participants quarterly – here’s a Google Map with sneak peek at who you will find on the next three WSAWs – July 9th will be particularly fun because that’s the night before Summer Fest, so you can visit stops in The Junction while wandering the closed street. And the new participants include venues outside The Junction, too, like Coffee at the Heights (WSB sponsor) in Sunrise Heights.

Today/tonight: Crochet a river; do the Art Walk; congratulate grads

That’s Mandy Greer in a shot we captured on Delridge Day May 30th, as she continued adding to the crocheted river she’s creating as part of Mater Matrix Mother and Medium, art to be installed later this month at Camp Long. And that’s where you’ll find here today, noon-4 pm, as she invites anyone and everyone interested to join her in crocheting more of the rest of her work. That’s not today’s only art event:

WSB sponsor Click! Design That Fits is one of the 40-plus stops on tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk, 6-9 pm, with a “fresh” theme – read about it here. For the full list of Art Walk stops, check out the official website; here’s a direct link to the printable map. And while you’re in The Junction, remember tonight is the grand opening for Curious Art Kids and Curious Party Kids at Curious Kidstuff (WSB sponsor), 6-8 pm (with cupcakes!) – read more here. Finally, for hundreds of West Seattle teenagers and their families – this will be remembered as graduation night:

sashes.jpg

That’s a photo from the 2008 West Seattle High School graduation at Memorial Stadium (Seattle Center downtown). That’s where WSHS’s Class of 2009 will graduate at 5 pm tonight; then at 7:30 at the Seattle Lutheran High School gym, the SLHS Class of ’09 has its commencement. (Here’s a full list of West Seattle-linked graduations taking place over the next week.) This is just part of what’s happening today/tonight – check out the WSB West Seattle Events calendar for more (including the Alki Idol finals!).

West Seattle scenes: Taste of West Seattle, WS Art Walk

Kokoras Greek Grill in Morgan Junction (foreground) and Eats Market Cafe in Westwood Village (background) were two of the food purveyors at Thursday night’s Taste of West Seattle at The Hall at Fauntleroy, benefiting West Seattle Helpline – and even in the early minutes, when we dropped in for some quick pix, the place was buzzing:

Others on the long list of Taste of West Seattle participants included WSB sponsor Cafe Revo (added Friday – Revo won “best bite”!). As we mentioned earlier in the day, it was a busy night around West Seattle. We also made the rounds of some of the West Seattle Art Walk venues – first, it wouldn’t be Art Walk night without food, and neon-bright cupcakes were offered at The Skate Church in The Junction:

Then we caught up with a few artists – at Clementine, William A. Herberholz:

At Keller-Williams Realty, artists included Mark Morgan and Krissy Maier:

And before the night was out, we went to Alki to catch the post-sunset glow – the Bathhouse was a beautiful Art Walk venue, with the view blending right in as an artwork in its own right:

The West Seattle Art Walk has venues from Fauntleroy to Alki to Admiral to Morgan Junction to Delridge, all over the peninsula, and you can enjoy the next one on June 11th – do note, many of the art shows are up for the entire month, not just WSAW night. At ArtsWest, though, the annual student exhibition is only up two more days – today and tomorrow.

Tonight: Taste of West Seattle; Kenney review; Art Walk; concert

TASTE OF WEST SEATTLE: Why wait for the Bite of Seattle when you can try the Taste of West Seattle? It’s happening tonight, benefiting West Seattle Helpline, 6 pm at The Hall at Fauntleroy, with participating food/beverage providers: Alki Bakery, Bakery Nouveau, Beveridge Place Pub, The Bohemian, Cafe Revo (WSB sponsor), Cupcake Royale, Eats Market Cafe, Elliott Bay Brewing, Endolyne Joe’s, Husky Deli, Lee’s Asian, Metropolitan Market, Prost, Salty’s, Starbucks, Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes, West 5, West Seattle Cellars. $40/door. P.S. Helpline executive director Anna Fern also tells us, “We are also having a raffle of 24 donated gift certificates from local restaurants and business. And an auction for four items: Beecher’s Cheesemaker of the Day, Crowley Tug Ride at Maritime Festival, Art of the Table Supper, and Health through Hypnosis.”

kenneycupola.jpgDESIGN REVIEW FOR THE KENNEY: On the heels of last week’s community meeting to unveil the newest design proposals (WSB coverage here), comes tonight’s Southwest Design Review Board meeting – 6:30 pm, Senior Center of West Seattle. These meetings always include ample opportunity for public comment, so if you have something to say about The Kenney’s $150 million redevelopment proposal, be there.

WEST SEATTLE ART WALK: The weather’s supposed to get better as the day goes on, but even if it doesn’t, note that the dozens of venues are indoors, with amazing art everywhere. Many displays are spotlighted on the official Art Walk site; one highlight is the opening reception for the student art show in the ArtsWest gallery. The Art Walk happens 6-9 tonight; get your map here.

FOOD BANK BENEFIT CONCERT: Also in The Junction, tonight’s the night that the junior high youth group at Holy Rosary is presenting Dennis Zender in concert as a benefit for the West Seattle Food Bank – admission is free, just bring a nonperishable food item. 7 pm.

Other events for tonight – including a discussion of the Duwamish River’s health, the West Seattle High School musical and the tango at Endolyne Joe‘s! – are on the WSB West Seattle Events calendar.

Tonight/tomorrow: Your legislators – and your Art Walk!

TONIGHT: West Seattle’s three state legislators – Sen. Joe McDermott, Rep. Eileen Cody and Rep. Sharon Nelson – will brief the 34th District Democrats on the just-completed legislative session – call it a sneak preview of their town hall in White Center this Saturday morning. Other hot topics on the 34th DDs’ agenda too (see it here) – they meet at 7 pm, The Hall at Fauntleroy.

TOMORROW: It’ll be the second Thursday of the month (already!), and that means time to get out and enjoy the monthly West Seattle Art Walk. Browse the WSAW website to get a look at some of what you can see around the peninsula 6-9 pm Thursday – from the Seattle Lutheran High School students showing at Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) to black-and-white infrared photos on display at 8 Limbs Yoga (WSB sponsor) and much more (those examples are both in The Junction, but the Art Walk stretches from Admiral and Alki to Fauntleroy). Many venues offer refreshments, too. Here’s the official map to everyone who’s participating.

West Seattle scenes: Seen at last night’s Art Walk

During last night’s West Seattle Art Walk, stopping by Brunette Mix (WSB sponsor) in The Junction would have brought you a little Parisian flavor – Vertu Cakes‘ creation echoed the Eiffel Tower. Elsewhere, treats abounded:

Beneath the painting by “subdued surrealist” T.S. Pew, that’s the dessert buffet offered last night by M3 Bodyworks (whose ad on the WSB sidebar is a gateway to the latest M3 specials). You can see more of Pew’s work at other local businesses including Elliott Bay Brewery and Mashiko, and online at tspew.com. Also on display last night, the work of student artists:

That’s art from Holy Rosary School students, shown last night at The Kenney, the southernmost stop. Last but by no means least, the classic Art Walk pairing may be art and snacks, but at Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) in the Admiral District, the elegant pairing was modern living and modern real estate:

Click! joined forces with 360 Modern, a regional firm that handles, as noted online, “the buying and selling of modern homes.”

Even if you missed last night’s Art Walk, or – like us – only managed a few stops, keep in mind that many of the art displays are at the participating venues for the entire month – so keep an eye out for art as you shop in West Seattle. Next month’s Art Walk – always on the second Thursday – is May 14. And watch the WSB Events calendar for other Junction (and elsewhere) happenings in the meantime, like this one just announcedt:

April 24th from 7-10pm Carmilia’s, Clementine, Edie’s and Sweetie are joining together to host a night of beauty and fashion. Each store will have mini-spa treatments, drinks, treats and of course shopping with great deals. Visit each store and get a punch card stamped good for a glass of bubbly at West 5. There will also be a VIP Discount card given out, good for discounts at the stores and the participating salons (Julie from Ola, Heidi from Seattle Style Salon, Sara from Sara’s Skin Butik and The Body Bar). Please join us for an amazing night. Questions? Call Erin at Edie’s, 206.937.2029

NOT IN WEST SEATTLE, BUT WE’RE PART OF IT: If you’re interested in the ever-lively discussion of how the news-media world is evolving, we hope to see you downtown tonight for the second No News Is Bad News event, this one focusing on new types of online ventures – such as WSB (your editor here is on tonight’s panel, along with other journalist-entrepreneurs, including two former P-I employees involved with new ventures) — and how they figure into the evolving media landscape. 7 pm, Bertha Landes Room at City Hall , free but organizers would love to have you RSVP now to save a spot.

West Seattle Art Walk tomorrow: The map, and a few highlights

Click that image for a full-size, printable version of the map/venue list for tomorrow night’s West Seattle Art Walk (6-9 pm, every second Thursday of the month). 40 venues are participating this time, from Alki to Delridge to Fauntleroy and many points inbetween, including Admiral, where Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) – will offer art, real estate, and shopping deals:

With a common appreciation for modern architecture and design, it’s a perfect match. During the West Seattle Art Walk, the real estate professionals of 360 Modern will have a festive meet and greet hosted by Click! Design That Fits in the Admiral District of West Seattle.

Guests can talk shop with fellow modern design fans, perhaps laying the groundwork for a future move with help from the local modern authorized agents of 360. Also during the event, all Click! purchases are 15% off! and the beautiful encaustic and oil paintings of Kate Fluckinger
adorn the walls. (Sorry, discount does not apply to the artwork.)

Meantime, “food can be art” is part of the message behind a photography display at C and P Coffee that you’ll see as part of the Art Walk; “What Feeds Us” photographers Sally Shintaffer and Poppy Barach are also known for writing the website Mixed Greens (featured on the WSB Blogs page, too). One more preview:

That’s art by Karl Addison from partybots.org, and you’ll see it at Twilight Artist Collective in The Junction during the Art Walk. Wine and cupcakes are promised too; here’s the official description of what he’s showing:

Karl Addison has been exploring the idea of over-population, saturation, and the dynamics between individual identity versus the selfhood gained and lost when one becomes part of a union. For this show, Karl will impregnate the back gallery of twilight with a superplethora of mustachio boxes. The mustachio boxes, each having individual personalities, that when viewed together in this overpopulation become something all together different.

An ardent naturalist, Karl Addison uses earth-friendly products in all his endeavors.

(Other photos of his installation are on this Flickr page.) More information about tomorrow night’s artists can be found on the official Art Walk site — along with detail on some of the places you’ll find treats (like champagne and chocolates at Clementine!).

Happening now: West Seattle Art Walk goes to the dogs!

We’ve already got a photographer checking out some of the West Seattle Art Walk venues – and just got this note we wanted to share, from Amy Lee Derenthal at The Kenney:

We have a lobby full of dogs, artists and wonderful food along with wine tasting by South Seattle Community College… and did I mention the champagne? The artists are pet photographers and a pet portrait artist. Come on down! It’s fun!

Photos to come. P.S. We’re told you’re welcome to bring YOUR dog to The Kenney. ADDED 7:24 PM: Back with a few photos – first, Leon the Australian cattle dog, who was there with Jen Flynn from Four Legs Photography:

Second, part of the lavish layout of treats at The Kenney (not shown – chocolate-dipped strawberries, sparkling cider, and champagne):

We also checked out Art Walk stops on the other side of West Seattle – those photos shortly – event continues till 9; here’s the map. ADDED 7:51 PM: Without really plotting our stops this way, we ended up with something of a creature theme – this squid creation was on display at the Senior Center of West Seattle:

At Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) in the Admiral District, this sculpin by Megan Bailey:

If you drop by Click! with a donation for the West Seattle Food Bank, you can get 10 percent off any one item in the store. Last but by no means least (more than 40 venues and we just got to a few), from Twilight in The Junction, custom metalwork by Lisa Geertsen and Andy Blakney, seen here mugging with one of their creations:

And at Brunette Mix (WSB sponsor), oil paintings by Akiko Masker, including this:

Weather (hopefully) calming down in time for Art Walk tomorrow

Need something to look forward to, as this windy, rainy, post-snow, post-holidays first-full-week-of-the-year chugs on? How about — tomorrow night’s West Seattle Art Walk! Second Thursday of every month, 6-9 pm, and if you haven’t checked it out lately, you might not realize it’s spread far beyond its original Junction-area borders, with venues in Admiral, Alki, Delridge, Morgan Junction, and more – in fact, one of the newest participants is in Fauntleroy – The Kenney. The venues and artists are listed on the official West Seattle Art Walk blog, where you can get the walking map too.

That’s artist Lisa Pettit, one of dozens of local artists showing their works during tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk – which you can enjoy at any or all of more than 40 venues, all over WS, till 9 o’clock tonight (full list here). Lisa’s showing drawings and etchings at Brunette Mix, which is on Oregon just west of California (see more of Lisa’s art at her website; her work is on display at the salon all month). On the other end of the heart of The Junction, you’ll find WSB contributing photojournalist Christopher Boffoli at Ama Ama (WSB sponsor), where his imagery is being displayed on the flatscreens over the bar. Wherever you go — meet an artist, enjoy art and refreshments, holiday-shop, and have fun under the full moon!

West Seattle scenes: Big night for holiday parties

Salty’s on Alki is done up to the Christmas nines inside as well as out, as you can tell from that photo taken during Wednesday night’s West Seattle Chamber of Commerce holiday party (with WSCoC executive director Patti Mullen at center). That was the biggest party in West Seattle north; as for West Seattle south, 34th District Democrats gathered to celebrate both the holidays and recent victories — not just the presidential and governor elections:

Left to right, the three local state legislators who won their races – all unopposed – last month, 34th District Rep. Sharon Nelson, Sen. Joe McDermott, Rep. Eileen Cody. (By the way, Sen. McDermott is the new assistant floor leader; Rep. Cody leads the Health Care and Wellness committee). One more elected official on hand — long after we left the party, Pathfinder K-8 parent Leslie Harris sent this photo of Hizzoner buying a handmade wreath from PF parent Brent Morgan:

The Pathfinder community also is selling handmade gifts at a Craft Fair on campus tonight, and continuing to sell wreaths in The Junction on Hometown Holiday Sundays, as we showed you last weekend. Meanwhile: In The Junction and beyond, tonight’s biggest holiday event is one you can enjoy at more than 40 locations all over West Seattle: The holiday edition of the West Seattle Second Thursday Art Walk, 6-9 pm, venues and artists listed here – and you can see the map fullsize here. WSB sponsors that are participating (in order of their numbers on the map): Hotwire Coffee, Wellness at The Junction (you’ll see that as 8 Limbs Yoga on the map), Dream Dinners, Click! Design That Fits, West Seattle Nursery, M3 Bodyworks, Seattle Wellness Programs, Skylark, and Ama Ama Oyster Bar and Grill (where WSB contributing photographer Christopher Boffoli‘s fabulous images will be displayed on the flatscreens over the bar during the 6-9 Art Walk hours).

Junction holiday updates: Art Walk; Santa & open mike Sunday

Updates on Hometown Holidays in The Junction – First, looking to next Sunday, not only will you get another chance to get Santa photos at Cupcake Royale – the photos (provided by the West Seattle Junction Association [WSB sponsor] but with donation requested, proceeds to WestSide Baby, West Seattle Food Bank, and West Seattle Helpline – last Sunday brought in $500!) come in these two looks, full color and “classic aged,” taken by pro photographer Donna Ryan. And there’s a special feature at Hometown Holidays HQ (in front of Key Bank at California/Alaska) next Sunday – there’ll be an open holiday mike for musicians, coordinated by Patrick Small (of Patrick and Danny, who played at last Saturday night’s Tree Lighting) — Susan Melrose of WSJA says, “West Seattle musicians of all genres are invited to play holiday tunes, lead a sing-along, or come up with a holiday act that’s all their own. Musicians must coordinate with Patrick in advance at patrick@laststarrecordings.com.” One more Junction note – this Thursday is the Holiday Art Walk, 6-9 pm – of course, it stretches beyond Junction borders (for example, in the Admiral District, WSB sponsor Click! Design That Fits is having a late-night shopping event in connection with the Art Walk) – but if you want to get in on the free child care in The Junction, you need to sign up now – call Dan at West Seattle Christian Church, which is providing the service in connection with this month’s Art Walk only – 206-932-2098 x. 102. This Art Walk isn’t to be missed – how about tacky sweaters at Twilight? and more – read all about it here.

Countdown to 3 big holiday events in The Junction

thetree1.jpgFirst – this Saturday’s tree lighting in The Junction. We are pleased to announce that your WSB co-publishers have the honor of helping emcee the hourlong extravaganza, which will feature live holiday music, live holiday theater (a sample of ArtsWest‘s “Plaid Tidings”), and the first drawings as part of the West Seattle Junction Association (WSB sponsor)’s $5,000 holiday giveaway (enter FREE at any participating store!). 5 pm in the Farmers’ Market parking lot (44th/Alaska). WSB marks its third birthday this holiday season (first post 12/24/05) and we’d love to celebrate a West Seattle holiday tradition with YOU. Second event – the day after that, noon-4 pm this Sunday, it’s the first of three Junction Hometown Holidays Sundays, with draft-mule carriage rides, special in-store events, and Santa photos at Cupcake Royale (donation suggested for local charities) taken by a professional photographer. Speaking of great photography – we are thrilled to learn that WSB contributing photojournalist Christopher Boffoli will be one of the artists participating in the holiday edition of the West Seattle Second Thursday Art Walk next week (6-9 pm December 11th) — Christopher’s work will be displayed on the big screens at Ama-Ama (which also happens to be a brand-new WSB sponsor – story to come tomorrow!), northeast corner of California/Edmunds. This Art Walk also has a special bonus to help holiday shoppers – free child care for ages 3-11, provided by West Seattle Christian Church (space limited; call Dan at 932-2098, x. 102, ASAP).

*Linda Ann Cox reminds us that a great way to start next Saturday is at the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle Pancake Breakfast at the Masonic Hall, 4736 40th SW – 7 to 11 am, $6 adults/$3 kids, proceeds to Kiwanis Sponsored Youth Services, Santa will even be there. (This event is one of many listed on the Holiday Happenings page – and we’re continuing to add new ones daily, so keep an eye out; West Seattle is overflowing with holiday fun this year.)
