The forecast looks a tiny bit better for tomorrow night, when more than three dozen local businesses and venues welcome you to stop by between 6 and 9 pm for the next monthly West Seattle Art Walk. You can start plotting your course now by going to the official Art Walk website — which has previews of some of the artists you’ll see, all over the peninsula. The business lineup changes every quarter – some come, some go – the lineup for January through March, more than three dozen strong, includes seven WSB sponsors that are literally all over the (West Seattle) map: Click! Design That Fits in Admiral, Skylark Cafe and Club in North Delridge, Hotwire Online Coffeehouse, Mural and Wallflower Custom Framing in The Junction, Feedback Lounge in Morgan Junction, and Sold Home Decor in Westwood. You’ll also find participants that are hot spots for art any time of the month, including Twilight Artist Collective in The Junction, celebrating its fifth anniversary. Now till 9 pm, dozens of venues all over the peninsula – from Alki to North Delridge, The Junction to Morgan Junction to Fauntleroy – are welcoming you to stop in for this month’s West Seattle Art Walk. We previewed a few venues this morning; the Art Walk website has many more previews; and we’ve received a few more notes in the meantime, including word of a “crow” theme at Coffee to a Tea with Sugar in The Junction, with Gatewood author Lyanda Lynn Haupt signing her acclaimed book “Crow Planet” while artist Cara Granger shows crow-themed paintings.

Also, while ActivSpace artists participate in this month’s Art Walk, High Point-residing realtor Wendy Hughes-Jelen is having a reception at her new GreenWorks Realty office in ActivSpace. West Seattle Art Walk tonight! Bring food bank donations

Tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk rocks at the Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor) with the Seattle premiere of “Double Down Live,” West Seattle filmmaker Jamie Chamberlin‘s two-disc production of tour footage from the band — 1980 for one disc, 2008 for the other. Screening’s at 7 (with another one post-Art Walk at 10). And that’s just one of many stops on the map – get it here – which ranges all over West Seattle:

Not far from the Feedback, it’s Harvest Time at The Kenney – one of the spots on this month’s Art Walk collecting nonperishable food donations for the two food banks that serve West Seattle – art includes watercolors, jewelry and live piano/vocals – Brock Mason Photography will also be there offering professional-quality family portraits in front of a decorated holiday tree – and you can nosh on “autumn comfort foods” provided by the catering team from The Kenney.

Heading north, Emerald Spiral (5910 California SW) features Iris Muranaka’s work and acoustic music by Why Ask Why; C and P Coffee‘s Wine Club tasting event coincides with Art Walk night – 6-8 pm, the theme is Thanksgiving wine, with Christy Hemovich from Grape Expectations offering suggestions for holiday meals. (While Art Walk itself is free, this event at C&P has a $15 tasting fee; RSVP to candpco@comcast.net)

On to The Junction, Twilight Artist Collective opens a new show tonight, surveying contemporary Northwest ironwork by members of the NW Blacksmith Association, curated by Lisa Geertsen and Andy Blakney of Firelight Forge, with an opening reception during Art Walk 6-9 pm.

Wallflower Custom Framing (WSB sponsor) also has an artists’ reception, opening a group show of “Puny Pictures”:

The show includes 23 artists with 162 pieces, says Wallflower’s Kelly Rae Cunningham, who’s among the artists. Wallflower is across 42nd from Jefferson Square.

Continuing north, there’s also a reception at Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor), with artist Todd Martin, who explains: “The show: ‘Head Shots, if animals were celebrities,’ is based on the idea of what it would be like if the paparazzi chased animals instead of celebrities.” Hotwire is one of the locations collecting food-bank donations, along with nearby Ginomai, Alki Bathhouse, ActivSpace, The Kenney, Sterling Images, and Bird on a Wire Espresso. ORIGINAL 7:22 PM REPORT: Back at WSB HQ to put up a few pix from our West Seattle Art Walk ramblings so far – heading back out to see more. (For blanket disclosure, all three of these first photos are from WSB sponsor locations.) Top photo is painter Paul Creasman, who is showing at M3 Bodyworks – 5410 California SW, upstairs, quite the party, lots of beer, catering by seasonalpalate.com, stop by till 9 pm. In North Delridge, we caught up with photographer Jenny Jimenez:

Her exhibition “Show Me Your TIFFs” features 10 years of music photography and is at Skylark Cafe and Club – two walls of photos – 3803 Delridge Way, and she’s there in person till 9 pm tonight too. (Plus live music – singer-songwriter Damien Jurado and Amy Blaschke.) Artists are on hand at many venues but not all; we dropped in at Dream Dinners, where Betty Olson Vacca‘s paintings are on the walls but the creating’s being done by clients:

HIGH SCHOOL EVENTS: In addition to West Seattle High School Curriculum Night, starting at 6:30 pm (as previewed here last Sunday), tonight is also Open House night at Chief Sealth High School, starting with free dinner at 5:30 pm (the evening’s agenda is on the CSHS website). Then remember – no school tomorrow districtwide.

WEST SEATTLE ART WALK: In addition to some of the venues we mentioned in this preview (the punk-pumpkin-carving at Feedback Lounge [WSB sponsor] is a don’t-miss), tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk (6-9 pm) also includes: At C & P Coffee, the 2nd Thursday wine club “will be raising a glass to wine club member Elizabeth Bachman as she shares her photographs with her first West Seattle show: ‘Out for a Walk’,” according to C & P proprietor Cameron. WSB sponsors Hotwire Coffee, Brunette Mix, Mural Apartments, Wallflower Custom Framing, Dream Dinners, Click! You wouldn’t know unless you were told that the art on the walls of Shoofly Pie Co. (4444 California SW) are by an eight-year-old. The linoleum block prints by Schmitz Park Elementary third-grader Romy Ehrsam are surprisingly accomplished. But once you meet Romy, you’re not as surprised — the artist is quite self-possessed.

“I’m being interviewed!” she says proudly to a friend walking by, and then strikes a perfect pose for a photo with her work.

The truth is, Romy’s already an old hand at this.

West Seattle Art Walk, report #1: Scenes from a clear night

First of two reports from the September West Seattle Art Walk, which – unlike last month’s thundering, torrential-downpour night — was graced with clear skies: We walked into a full house at Ventana Construction (WSB sponsor), where artists included Bayou and Kelly showing off their bag creations (online at Rat City Rags). Moving north to The Junction, the featured artist at Brunette Mix (WSB sponsor) was Gatewood’s Pam Mandel:

We know Pam best for her travel writing at Nerd’s Eye View, but she revealed she was creating art, including the collages she showed tonight, long before she wandered into technology and writing. More collage was on display at Twilight Artist Collective, where there’s always a party on Art Walk night – here’s work from Shaw Osha, part of Twilight’s featured The Ontology of the Image show, curated by Chris Crites:

And the night’s boldest show involved art that hadn’t even been created yet when tonight’s Art Walk began: Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor) hosted the Paint Ball, giving four artists each a blank canvas and the mandate to transform it. We dropped in around two-thirds of the way through the evening:

Sites to see during tomorrow night’s West Seattle Art Walk

Remember West Seattle Art Walk night last month? Thunder, lightning, downpours? Looks like tomorrow’s expected weather will be much more conducive to wandering. And the offerings keep getting more and more creative. Sampling from among the ranks of WSB sponsors who are participating, for example, Feedback Lounge in Morgan Junction is presenting The Paint Ball – billed as “Four artists, 120 minutes, public scrutiny, suffering” (more here). At Brunette Mix in The Junction, Gatewood artist/writer Pam Mandel (also known for Nerd’s Eye View) is showing collages. Ventana Construction, between Alaska and Morgan Junctions, is having an “artist blowout.” Back in The Junction, Wallflower Custom Framing will show the work of Kelly Rae Cunningham, whose creations adorn walls in Mural Apartments (where Wallflower’s in the ground-level-retail area). Across the street at Dream Dinners in Jefferson Square, Betty Olson Vacca‘s oils, pastels and watercolors. Other WSB sponsors participating: Click! West Seattle Art Walk: Creativity-drenched, on a rainy night

Last night at Twilight Artist Collective in The Junction, during the August edition of the monthly West Seattle Art Walk, art literally happened inside and out – despite the thunder-and-lightning cloudbursts in the hour before WSAW kicked off. What you see above was created on the sidewalk outside Twilight – a surprise, its proprietors told us, by “traveling artist” friends Christopher and Erica, who dropped by. (Those are crabapples in the center of the piece.) Inside, DJ Joel was at the turntables for the promised dance party:

While Twilight’s home turf, The Junction, remains the epicenter of the ever-growing Art Walk, it’s now passed 50 venues, and the map reaches far and wide to all corners of the peninsula, like Fauntleroy:

The rain’s back – and thunder too – but tonight’s two big events are still on, and we wanted to remind you that BOTH are now indoors: West Seattle Art Walk, 6-9 pm, with locations all over the peninsula (here’s the printable map) — including the Nature Consortium‘s art exhibit at Youngstown Arts Center, 4408 Delridge (map) – NC’s Lisa Corbin sent the photo at right and says, “This painting titled MLK was done by one of our teaching artists, Agazit Ocbazgi. Her other pieces are equally as compelling. HELEN SUTTON MEMORIAL: This afternoon at 2 pm, longtime West Seattle entrepreneur and community advocate Helen Sutton will be remembered and celebrated at the South Seattle Community College Arboretum, which she helped create. Here’s a map to the college; here’s a campus map showing where the Arboretum is located. Ms. Sutton was 95 when she died in June (here’s our original report); she was the longtime owner of La Grace in The Junction, and was the first woman president of the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce. Everyone’s invited to the memorial.

WEST SEATTLE ART WALK: More than 50 venues all over West Seattle welcome your visit 6-9 pm to enjoy art (and treats at many stops). Not only is it an opportunity to see the artwork, but it’s also an open-house atmosphere where you can visit local businesses you might not just drop into otherwise. Many of tonight’s participating artists are listed on the official West Seattle Art Walk site. One unique event on tonight’s docket is STOP! COLLABORATE! at Twilight Artist Collective in The Junction (west of Easy Street), promising a DJ’ed dance party as well as a show curated by local artist Todd Karam. Here’s how Twilight describes it:

This is one-of-a-kind opportunity where 16 artists from Washington and California collaborated with each other. Of course there’s a twist. Each participating artist contributed one of their own “completed” pieces. After drawing names from a hat, another artist from the group then took the once completed piece to expand on it. You ask “..but, but will they respect the work of the other artist? Is this normal?” The answer is, “who knows.”

SUMMER CONCERTS AT HIAWATHA, UPDATE – INDOORS TONIGHT! (this item updated at 9:34 am with new information) The fourth in the popular-from-night-one new, FREE concert series presented by the Admiral Neighborhood Association is tonight at 6:30 at Hiawatha Community Center – and organizer Katy Walum says that because of the potentially showery weather, it WILL be held indoors at the Hiawatha gym. That may be the most exciting sight in the pre-West Seattle Summer Fest hours: Posters at Easy Street for the live music that’s sparked regional buzz – Mudhoney headlining Friday night’s live music (part of a slate on the Alaska stage, east of California, that starts at 6; Mudhoney’s expected after 8). By early Thursday evening, with tents and road barricades up, The Junction already looked like Festival Central:

And the relocated kid-fun zone (in front of Curious Kidstuff) already sports its climbing wall:

That’s a key point to remember about this year’s Summer Fest: The kid zone’s now in the Alaska-Edmunds block; the stage that was at that end of the festival is now the “Alaska” stage by Junction Plaza Park and its fundraising beer garden. There’s still another stage and beer garden on the north end. Individual restaurants/bars are setting up sidewalk cafes, too, like this one:

Elliott Bay spilled out into the street tonight, and like last year, brought in The Bubbleman to enchant kids of all ages – here’s video of his “countdown to bubbles” (and then of course, the bubbles too):

Also happening in The Junction (and elsewhere) Thursday night – the West Seattle Art Walk – check out muralist Jimmy Gersen painting to the beat inside the former north-side-of-Capers space (which as shown here Wednesday will be a video arcade during Summer Fest):

The map for the monthly West Seattle Art Walk keeps getting bigger and bigger – now more than 50 venues are on the list – and tonight they’ll all open their doors to you, from Fauntleroy (where Endolyne Joe’s [WSB sponsor] has joined up) to California SW between Junctions (another WSB sponsor, Ventana Construction, joins the Art Walk starting tonight) to Alki (the Bathhouse) and beyond. 6-9 pm, here’s the map, and browse the WS Art Walk website to find out who’s showing what where. Many venues, as always, are in The Junction, where there’s something extra tonight: Streets close at 6 pm for West Seattle Summer Fest preps. And Elliott Bay sets up its outdoor “beer garden” early (as they reminded this morning via Twitter) – with family entertainment in the street, The Bubbleman expected around 7, like last year!

Before West Seattle’s biggest summertime celebration – the three-day West Seattle Summer Fest (sponsoring, and co-sponsored by, WSB) – takes over The Junction, Friday-Sunday (7/10-7/12), the night before is a celebration all its own: New venues have joined the West Seattle Art Walk this summer – and now there are FIFTY-EIGHT participants all over West Seattle! New venues include WSB sponsors Ventana Construction (between Alaska and Morgan Junctions), Coffee at the Heights (in Sunrise Heights), and Endolyne Joe’s (in Fauntleroy). As you can see from the section of the map shown above (click here to download the entire map, which also includes a list of venues and their addresses), it’s all over West Seattle, from Alki to Fauntleroy, but there’s a special feature for The Junction this time around – since it’s the night before Summer Fest, California will be closed, and you can wander in the street (The Bubbleman will be outside Elliott Bay around 7 pm, like last year). Drop by the other spots too – you will often find snacks and beverages, and meet great people, both entrepreneurs and artists. The official Art Walk website continues to add more info about the specific exhibits (and venues’ own sites have info too, like the big three-show extravaganza at Twilight) – keep an eye on it at westseattleartwalk.blogspot.com.

The West Seattle Art Walk (official site here) adds new participants quarterly – here’s a Google Map with sneak peek at who you will find on the next three WSAWs – July 9th will be particularly fun because that’s the night before Summer Fest, so you can visit stops in The Junction while wandering the closed street. And the new participants include venues outside The Junction, too, like Coffee at the Heights (WSB sponsor) in Sunrise Heights.

Today/tonight: Crochet a river; do the Art Walk; congratulate grads

That’s Mandy Greer in a shot we captured on Delridge Day May 30th, as she continued adding to the crocheted river she’s creating as part of Mater Matrix Mother and Medium, art to be installed later this month at Camp Long. And that’s where you’ll find here today, noon-4 pm, as she invites anyone and everyone interested to join her in crocheting more of the rest of her work. That’s not today’s only art event:

That’s a photo from the 2008 West Seattle High School graduation at Memorial Stadium (Seattle Center downtown). That’s where WSHS’s Class of 2009 will graduate at 5 pm tonight; then at 7:30 at the Seattle Lutheran High School gym, the SLHS Class of ’09 has its commencement. West Seattle scenes: Taste of West Seattle, WS Art Walk

Kokoras Greek Grill in Morgan Junction (foreground) and Eats Market Cafe in Westwood Village (background) were two of the food purveyors at Thursday night’s Taste of West Seattle at The Hall at Fauntleroy, benefiting West Seattle Helpline – and even in the early minutes, when we dropped in for some quick pix, the place was buzzing:

Others on the long list of Taste of West Seattle participants included WSB sponsor Cafe Revo (added Friday – Revo won “best bite”!). As we mentioned earlier in the day, it was a busy night around West Seattle. We also made the rounds of some of the West Seattle Art Walk venues – first, it wouldn’t be Art Walk night without food, and neon-bright cupcakes were offered at The Skate Church in The Junction:

And before the night was out, we went to Alki to catch the post-sunset glow – the Bathhouse was a beautiful Art Walk venue, with the view blending right in as an artwork in its own right:

The West Seattle Art Walk has venues from Fauntleroy to Alki to Admiral to Morgan Junction to Delridge, all over the peninsula, and you can enjoy the next one on June 11th – do note, many of the art shows are up for the entire month, not just WSAW night. At ArtsWest, though, the annual student exhibition is only up two more days – today and tomorrow.

TASTE OF WEST SEATTLE: Why wait for the Bite of Seattle when you can try the Taste of West Seattle? It’s happening tonight, benefiting West Seattle Helpline, 6 pm at The Hall at Fauntleroy, with participating food/beverage providers: Alki Bakery, Bakery Nouveau, Beveridge Place Pub, The Bohemian, Cafe Revo (WSB sponsor), Cupcake Royale, Eats Market Cafe, Elliott Bay Brewing, Endolyne Joe’s, Husky Deli, Lee’s Asian, Metropolitan Market, Prost, Salty’s, Starbucks, Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes, West 5, West Seattle Cellars. $40/door. P.S. Helpline executive director Anna Fern also tells us, “We are also having a raffle of 24 donated gift certificates from local restaurants and business. And an auction for four items: Beecher’s Cheesemaker of the Day, Crowley Tug Ride at Maritime Festival, Art of the Table Supper, and Health through Hypnosis.”

kenneycupola.jpgDESIGN REVIEW FOR THE KENNEY: On the heels of last week’s community meeting to unveil the newest design proposals (WSB coverage here), comes tonight’s Southwest Design Review Board meeting – 6:30 pm, Senior Center of West Seattle. These meetings always include ample opportunity for public comment, so if you have something to say about The Kenney’s $150 million redevelopment proposal, be there.

WEST SEATTLE ART WALK: The weather’s supposed to get better as the day goes on, but even if it doesn’t, note that the dozens of venues are indoors, with amazing art everywhere. Many displays are spotlighted on the official Art Walk site; one highlight is the opening reception for the student art show in the ArtsWest gallery. The Art Walk happens 6-9 tonight; get your map here.

FOOD BANK BENEFIT CONCERT: Also in The Junction, tonight’s the night that the junior high youth group at Holy Rosary is presenting Dennis Zender in concert as a benefit for the West Seattle Food Bank – admission is free, just bring a nonperishable food item. 7 pm.
