Dog rescued by police at Westwood Village still at shelter

Update tonight in the tale of a dog that Seattle Police rescued from a car at Westwood Village, reported Wednesday on SPD Blotter: Today’s Blotter followup says Zipper the puggle is being kept at the Seattle Animal Shelter while an animal-cruelty investigation is under way. Witnesses told police the car in which Zipper was found had been parked at the center for six days, though it hasn’t been determined if Zipper was inside the whole time. Zipper apparently was supposedly under a dog-sitter’s watch, while his owner was out of town.

Happening now: Heels for Hounds – shoes, tunes, sips, tastes

Lots of time left to get to Ola Salon in Luna Park for Furry Faces Foundation‘s first-ever “Heels for Hounds” – not just a silent auction of some cute shoes (casual as well as fancy, as shown in the photo above), but also wine tasting, appetizers, and live music, all to benefit animal advocacy:

Ola’s at 2942 SW Avalon Way.

From the WSB Pets page: Lisa and Elliott find each other

Sometimes despite all the searching, your lost pet just can’t be found. The WSB Pets page archives include still-open reports that may never be closed. And then there’s the tale of Lisa and Elliott. Posting as “Elle,” Lisa reported her cat Diesel missing four months ago. That’s Lisa in the photo, but not Diesel – well, not ENTIRELY Diesel. Marianne from Friends of the Animals Foundation explains:

Elliott is the cat living under the porch of a Alaska Junction business on the Pets page earlier in the week. Lisa thought he might be her beloved cat Diesel and went on a search for Elliott.

She managed to trap the cat with the help of Kathleen, a WS cat rescuer. I run Friends of the Animals Foundation and had room for Elliott in our cages at Next to Nature. Lisa did some research with the help of Elliott’s microchip and found out his sad story. He was adopted from the Humane Society in January and quickly jumped off of the porch of his new home and disappeared. He was apparently on his own for the past four months. When Lisa contacted his owner, she decided that she didn’t want him.

Lisa fell in love with Elliott and with the help of Joy Turner, pet communicator, found out that Diesel’s soul is in Elliott. Elliot even climbed into Diesel’s old shirt. Elliott’s new full name is Elliott Yi Talarico (named after the businesses in the alley).

Marianne points out that Elliott did not have to spend months living in the alley – if someone had taken him to a vet sooner to check for a chip, he would have had a new home sooner. Be sure to get a found animal checked for a chip – she points out that all clinics will do that for free, and will help you connect with the Seattle Animal Shelter. Marianne also says big thanks go to Emma, who called attention to Elliott’s plight.

From the WSB Lost/Found Pets page: Macaw rescued!

A happy-ending story to conclude the night:

After a text this afternoon, we posted a “lost macaw spotted” report on the WSB Lost/Found Pets page. Not much later, a rescue ensued: Merry Myers tells the tale, and shares the photos:

Mya the Macaw flew out of her house up the hill from 47th and Alaska Sts and landed on the highest branches of a tree just off the 47th Ave SW alley – between Alaska and Oregon. The owners tried to call the bird down and soon a crowd from the neighborhood gathered, including a nearby resident who brought her parrot with her to see if the Macaw might be curious enough to come down and investigate:

Tall ladders were offered by the neighbors and the owner climbed way up in the tree with treats, to try and lure her down.

Finally she began to make her way down to him and he eventually managed to grab her and make his way precariously down the tree while the neighbors cheered.

We live in a great neighborhood.

West Seattle Montessori/WS Academy students’ food drive – for pets!

(Photo courtesy West Seattle Montessori/West Seattle Academy)
In recent months, we’ve shared the news of multiple food drives by community-minded students at local schools – and we have another one today: This time, to help pets in area shelters. West Seattle Montessori/West Seattle Academy (WSB sponsor) assistant director Heather Aquino explains:

Our seventh-grade students have taken on a very cool cause. (Through) April 25 they are challenging all of our classes to collect as much pet food as they can, by the pound, to be donated to local Seattle shelters. Our winning class will have a small party hosted by these incredible seventh-graders.

Community members are welcome to donate pet food too – drop it off at the school, 11215 15th SW, today or April 22-25th (as with Seattle Public Schools, WSMS/WSA will be out on spring break next week).

Happening now: Playing & bidding at animal advocates’ Catsino

Silent auctions are a bit like shopping at sales – though you’re never sure if you’re going to have the winning bid – with a bonus payoff: You know your money’s going to do good work. In the case of “Catsino,” under way at Beveridge Place Pub in Morgan Junction until 6 pm, it’s going to help those who can’t speak or fight for themselves – animals. There are so many circumstances in which the organizations behind the event – presented by Furry Faces Foundation – step in. If furry friends like Nora could say thanks, we’re sure they would:

In addition to the beneficiaries, Catsino also involves local businesses and groups who are sponsoring – and staffing! – the just-for-fun game tables, like Ventana Construction (WSB sponsor), whose Anne Higuera is at right in our next photo:

Ventana’s offering a “Carpenter for a Day” item in the silent auction, we noticed, so go bid! The fun’s not even half over. The pub’s at 6413 California SW.

A brand-new West Seattle St. Patrick’s Day event debuted this weekend – the first-ever pets/people costume contest at The Celtic Swell on Alki. WSB contributing photojournalist Nick Adams was there to catch some of the contenders on camera. Above, that’s Zoey; next, the Lynns and their boxer:

Pub owners Gareth and Joleen Hughes‘ Siberian Huskies Finnegan, left, and Foley were of course on hand and wearing some green:

“This is a chance for our community to meet our local business owners in a fun, personal setting and learn more about animal rescue groups,” say Gary Sink and Terri Griffith, owners of Beveridge Place Pub, “and, if you like what you hear ‘n’ see, drop a few dollars into their donation bucket or sign up to volunteer with them! We know that A.A.R.F., Community Cat Coalition, Regional Animal Services of King County, and Furry Faces Foundation folks are looking forward to meeting all of you!’

It’s one of five places where you can buy tickets early and save $5 – along with Hotwire Online Coffeehouse, The Wash Dog, Ventana Construction (all WSB sponsors), and Pet Elements.

West Seattle pets: Celtic Swell costume contest on St. Patrick’s Day eve – for people, too

St. Patrick’s Day is on a Sunday this year – two weeks from tomorrow – and that means an entire 3-day weekend of revelry at The Celtic Swell on Alki – featuring a costume contest for “Pets and Their People.” It’ll run 2-4 pm on Saturday, March 16th, per the announcement we received today:

Labs dressed-up like leprechauns! Shar peis with shillelaghs! Bulldogs boasting bagpipes! There’s no telling what you’ll see when Alki’s Celtic Swell Irish Pub hosts its first annual St. Patrick’s Day “Pets & Their People” Costume Contest featuring a free photo booth and prizes to benefit the Seattle Humane Society. The family-and-pet-friendly event is a must-do for everyone seeking festive and memorable St. Paddy’s Day fun.

Guests are invited to dress up their pets (and themselves) in St. Pat’s day garb, mug it up Irish-style in the Celtic Swell’s free photo booth, and win incredible prizes donated by some of the area’s favorite local businesses. Participation is free with all donations benefiting the Seattle Humane Society.

With two Siberian Huskies of his own, Celtic Swell owner Gareth Hughes says the costume contest and the cause felt like a natural fit for the Swell. “This year marks our 9th annual Paddy’s celebration, so we wanted to try something a little different! I can’t think of a better way to get the entire family in on the fun of St. Paddy’s day and give back to invaluable community organizations like the Seattle Humane Society who work tirelessly to promote positive change. Judging from the tremendous positive response we’ve received already, I’m confident this will become a cherished family tradition for years to come.”

Today’s announcement also includes a schedule of other events at Celtic Swell that weekend – see the full list here (PDF). The pub’s on Alki Avenue SW, just east of 61st SW, across from Statue of Liberty Plaza and Alki Bathhouse.

Alki Tavern’s neighbor Magoo the cat needs ‘nice quiet place to retire and write memoirs’

While WSB has a special page to help reunite lost/found pets and people, we usually point the occasional the “pet in need of a home” notice toward the WSB Forums. This one, though, just screamed – meowed – front-page news … or perhaps mews:

Greetings …I am Magoo.

I am the current resident of 1311 Alki Ave SW as well as the neighbor to the Notorious Alki Tavern.

The land my home is on has been sold to developers and will be torn down along with the tavern.

So years living next to the Best Biker bar in West Seattle has brought me years of joy and excitement.

Watching everyone come and go on sunny summer days and hearing all of their tall-tales…

watching the Blue Angels scream across the water…they always make me hide under my box… seeing only the locals bundle up on cold winter days to go for a walk on the beach… enjoying curling up and watching the reflection of the sun off the buildings downtown… and hearing the sound of the seals out on the buoy barking all night long.

I loved watching the world pass me by from my tiny 1911 baby blue beach hut on Alki Ave SW.

With the selling of the land I now need to think about my next move in life. I have decided I am looking for a nice quiet place to retire and write my memoirs of my life next to the tavern.

I came to the beach in West Seattle as a kitten so I have…well…it’s is rude to talk about age so let’s just say I have lots of stories.

I am like a classic Mercedes…as long as you maintain the engine…the car will run forever.

My engine is strong, but I need a little extra tlc…just like a high-mileage car.

The man that lived here with me was a great mechanic and he took great care of me.

After learning the land was sold, he passed away … it truly broke his heart to know he had to leave his familiar home.

Now I am left without someone to type for me; my nails get caught in the keys… So… if you would be interested in helping me write my memoirs as well as take care of me…

the usual… feed me pet me love me… clean up after me… but most of all love me…

Please contact my assistant at: 206-388-8828
She will get you on my calendar for an appointment.

Magoo’s assistant, Kelly, says those who knew and loved Magoo’s dearly departed human also are “contacting artists to paint the side of the house in nothing but pink flamingos … if anyone knew JD and would like to show their appreciation and celebrate his life, they are welcome to place a pink flamingo anywhere around his little beach house.”

Video followup: Seattle City Light rescues cat from Genesee power pole

We first told you last night about a little black cat stuck on a power pole at 46th/Andover – not with the intent of putting out a “somebody help!” call, but with the intent of finding its owner, since neighbors had no idea whose cat it was. Nonetheless, an outpouring of concern resulted, in WSB comments and on the WSB Facebook page – and repeated calls to Seattle City Light brought out a crew to help. Our video shows the rescue, just a short time ago – though as you’ll see, the cat did not want to stay with rescuer Aaron!

Update: Seattle City Light rescues cat from Genesee power pole

SUNDAY, 7:27 PM: That’s a cat in a tough spot in the rain – and since nobody seems to know whose it is, and it’s been up there for many hours, we went to check it out so we could crosspost on the Lost/Found Pets page. (We used a flashlight for a spotlight to get a photo – that’s the clearest one we have.) It’s sitting atop the stub of an old utility pole that’s fastened to the top of a newer one on the southwest corner of 46th and Andover, and the neighbors who e-mailed us earlier say nobody knows whose it is. If you are missing a relatively small black cat in that general area, you might go have a look. Food and water is waiting below if the kitty manages to get itself down. Otherwise, we have already forwarded the concerned neighbors the advice we’ve received repeatedly: Call a tree service. (The neighbors certainly would welcome any other suggestions.)

MONDAY MORNING UPDATE: As of 8:30, when we went by, still there:

See the comments for more extensive discussion of who’s done what and who’s suggested what. As mentioned there, we (and others) are checking with Seattle City Light – whom at least one neighbor says was called on Sunday.

9:54 AM UPDATE: The cat’s down, thanks to City Light.

Followup: Seattle Animal Shelter asking for help in dog-attack investigation

Following up on the 51st/Andover dog attack reported here last night – two large dogs attacking a small one, biting it and its owner – we spoke with the Seattle Animal Shelter‘s executive director Don Jordan a little while ago, and he says he needs the community’s help to figure out whose dogs they are and where to find them. An agent’s already been back out on patrol and couldn’t find them; they’re planning to try another search, but right now, he told WSB, what would help most is ANY tip about whose dogs they might be and where/how to find them: “We need people in West Seattle to put their eyes and ears to the ground and see if we can locate these dogs.” If you have any information, contact Jordan directly – e-mail is his preference, don.jordan@seattle.gov, but you also can call him, 206-386-4286.

Reader report: Dog attack under investigation in Genesee area

Lorrie wants to get the word out about a dog attack that she says a Seattle Animal Shelter officer is investigating. She says it happened around 9:30 this morning while her husband was walking their small, leashed dog:

At 51st and Andover [map], two large dogs ran up and attacked our dog. Both dog and man were bitten. … The animal control officer came to the house & documented the injury. He feels confident he will catch up to them. They have also been sighted up at Admiral. They’re really large so I would want people with small children to be wary as well.

The wounds weren’t major, she says. But they called SAS and police. No photo of the dogs, so we asked for a description: “One dog seemed to be a German shepherd/chow mix – big and furry. The other, maybe a brindle boxer/pit bull mix.” We’ll be following up with SAS tomorrow.

From the WSB Pets page: A cat, a car, and caring people

Someone lost their cat last night and may not even know yet that he won’t be coming home … he was hit by a car. Some caring people tried very hard to help, and asked that we share the story (crosslinked on the Pets page):

Please share the attached photo and info so this kitty’s owners can find some peace.

My wife and I saw a large white and orange cat on the side of the road on 35th between Barton and Henderson on January 11th at 11:30PM. We drove by initially thinking he was killed by a car as he was not moving, then saw him lift his head slightly. We’re cat people. We pulled over, found him bleeding from the mouth, breathing heavily, coughing blood and struggling to get out of the street but unable to do so. We pet him and diverted traffic away from the lane he was in.

Within a few moments, West Seattle neighbors from the Barton Court apartment complex and multiple drivers pulled over and turned on emergency lights to keep oncoming traffic out of the lane.

WSB Lost/Found Pets page marks its fifth anniversary

The return of a lost Golden Retriever to her family tonight reminded us that today is the 5th anniversary of the WSB Lost/Found Pets page. In keeping with our mentioned-earlier resolution to “make WSB more useful in 2013,” particularly by making sure everyone knows about free services offered here beyond 24/7 news, a few words about it: We haven’t kept count, but anecdotally, the page at westseattleblog.com/pets has helped at least a couple hundred pets reunite with their people. We never expected to have a lost/found pets sideline, thecats.jpgbut as WSB readership/participation grew after our turn toward news in winter 2006-2007, we started receiving requests to list them; on January 5, 2008, we launched the dedicated page as an easy-to-find place for listings, whether you’ve found a pet or lost one. Last year, we upgraded its format so each listing would have its own web address, enabling it to be shared if necessary (as with every story or page here on WSB, mouse over the “Share This” link for a simple way to share it via Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, and/or dozens more sharing-service options). Once there’s a reunion, please let us know so we can update the listing and remove the details. We share our home with pets (the two cats in the photo above, both adult shelter cats when we adopted them) too, and are glad WSB can be of assistance in getting wayward animal friends home. Hope you don’t ever need to use the Pets page, but if you do – e-mail info (and photo if available, jpg preferred) to editor@westseattleblog.com.

West Seattle firefighters, police, neighbors rescue stranded dog

There’s a tale of heroism, and a happy ending, behind the most-recent “found dog” notice on the WSB Pets page. Beach Drive-area resident Debra sent us the photo early this morning with news that firefighters and police had helped get the dog off the rocks at Emma Schmitz Overlook – and that the dog had been taken to Lien Animal Clinic. We later asked Seattle Fire Department public-information officer Kyle Moore if he could dig up details, and he tells WSB that Ladder 11 was called to the 4000 block of Beach Drive at 5:17 am “to assist SPD with an animal rescue”:

A bystander heard the yelps of a dog coming from the rocks below the Beach Drive walkway. The dog had somehow crawled into a hole inbetween the rocks of a 12-foot high seawall and was taking shelter. The tide was low but was coming, in threatening the safety of the scared animal. The bystander and two firefighters were able to lure the dog out of the rocks. A Ladder 11 firefighter then cradle carried the dog up to safety.

The dog was cold, scared and shaking but had no signs of injuries. Firefighters were able to walk to the dog and warm him up. The ladder company then drove the dog up to a nearby animal clinic where they met a Seattle Police Officer.

Since then, Dawnie, one of the neighbors who got the rescue in motion while spotting the dog during an early bike ride (and, it turns out, took the photo), tells WSB that its owners have been found: “A big sigh of relief, for such a sweet dog.”

Got shoes you don’t use? Furry Faces Foundation’s Heels for Hounds

Just out of the WSB inbox – a call for donations to get ready for a Furry Faces Foundation benefit coming up after the holidays. Here’s the news release:

What is ‘Heels For Hounds,” you ask? It’s the newest in a line of fun-(d)-raisers benefiting Furry Faces Foundation, a.k.a., F3.

“Ola Salon and Clementine Shoes are sponsoring this event in early 2013 and to be successful, we need donations of new or very gently worn, nice, women’s shoes,” says Rachel Karlin, Ola Salon owner. “During the event, shoes will be tastefully displayed at Ola Salon. You will be able to try them on and if the shoe fits, bid on them.’

Linda Walsh, owner of Clementine Shoes, explains, “Many of us purchase shoes for that special occasion or outfit, take very good care of them and are then ready for a new pair of shoes. So, why not clean out your closets and ‘upcycle’ them to benefit animals and their people? Who knows, you may even find a pair or two at the event that you can’t live without!”

“We are very excited about this new event,” says Teri Ensley, F3 Leader. “It’s a creative idea for a fundraiser and we appreciate Ola Salon’s and Clementine Shoes’ enthusiasm and support.’

If you have new or gently worn shoes to donate, please bring them to:

Ola Salon: 2942 Avalon Way SW; 206-933-6702
Clementine Shoes: 4447 California Ave SW; 206-935-9400
Hotwire Online Coffeehouse: 4410 California Ave SW; 206-935-1510
The Wash Dog: 6400 California Avenue Southwest; 206-935-4546; www.thewashdog.com/

Happening now: ‘Santa Paws,’ to help West Seattle Food Bank & Toys for Tots

Thanks to Alice Kuder for sharing the photo from the first of this season’s “Santa Paws” events – happening till 3 pm at Prudential NW, Suite 600 at Jefferson Square (4700 42nd SW). From the invite in the WSB West Seattle Holidays Guide: “Bring your dog, cat, friend, or family for a complimentary photo with Santa! Or, just drop by to say hello, and enjoy some coffee and holiday treats.” You don’t have to bring a donation for the West Seattle Food Bank and/or Toys for Tots (which takes new, unwrapped toys), but they’re welcome!

Has Lincoln Park gone to the dogs? Fauntleroy Community Association tackling topic

The subject of off-leash dogs in Lincoln Park – a violation of city/park rules – was the hottest topic on the agenda for this month’s Fauntleroy Community Association board meeting. A bigger discussion is on the horizon, and you’ll be invited. But in the meantime, violators are on notice:

West Seattle Crime (etc.) Watch: Car theft; police rescue dog

Two notes this morning – one a crime, one something else that police handled overnight. First, from Chessa:

Our car was stolen in front of our house in Seaview (45th AVE between Juneau and Findlay) sometime between 10 pm and 6 am last night. It is a 1995 light brown (mocha?) Subaru Legacy wagon, license plate 704 YBN, WA plates. There’s a 2008 Obama-Biden on the left upper rear window corner, with some rust spots on the roof. We did, of course, file a police report. If any of your readers see it, we’d love to know!

Police ask that you call 911 if you spot a stolen car. Second note is not about a crime, but its appearance on SPD’s “Tweets by Beat” feed led one alarmed WSB’er to ask about it. Here’s the tweet:

This actually involved a case of police rescuing a lost dog, according to e-mail we received overnight from the dog’s owner, Betsy, who said her Siberian Husky broke out very early this morning but is home now:

Apparently she had made it from our house near Mount St. Vincent all the way to the high rise of the West Seattle Bridge. We are SO thankful for the Seattle police and a dog savvy citizen who was able to corral and catch her. We got a call from Officer Graham at about 5:30am while we were out combing the streets. He and his partner said they were both dog lovers and we are very, very thankful for everyone’s help. She immediately went to sleep when she got home.

From the WSB Lost/Found Pets page: Jessie’s been found!

ORIGINAL REPORT, 4:44 PM: If you only check the main page here at WSB, you might not be aware that one of our “inside pages” has over the past few years become an online bulletin board for lost/found West Seattle pets (so if you find or lose one, please e-mail us!). There are many reunions – but the latest one is home-page news too.

While most lost/found dog reports are resolved relatively quickly, every so often it takes a while. Take the case of Jessie – who after 11 days has just been found and reunited with her person. You might have seen the flyers with Jessie’s photo all over West Seattle (we noticed one in The Junction just a few hours ago); numerous people have helped search for her – the comment thread on the original “lost” posting tells part of the story.

She ran off after a firecracker spooked her on October 20th; it was warned that she is very skittish, so don’t go after her, just call with the sighting. The sightings were reported from Admiral to Delridge and beyond … then she was finally found this afternoon in Gatewood/Upper Fauntleroy by Brooke, who hadn’t seen the listing but did see a dog on the run and spent an hour trying to get her! Once she did, she called us and asked how to report a found pet; we asked her to send in the info and a photo – and then realized the dog looked like Jessie, so we made sure Brooke saw Jessie’s photo, and that Jessie’s person knew about Brooke’s discovery. Turns out it IS Jessie, and she’s now back home. Thanks to everyone who takes the time out to watch for and/or take care of lost pets.

10:10 PM UPDATE: Here’s a photo of Jessie with her owner Ann at left, finder Brooke at right:

The photo is courtesy of Brooke’s mom Gwen. She explains that Brooke works at Giannoni’s Pizza in Westwood Village, and had to go to work before Ann arrived to pick up Jessie – so they went over to Westwood to meet Brooke.
