Got shoes you don’t use? Furry Faces Foundation’s Heels for Hounds

Just out of the WSB inbox – a call for donations to get ready for a Furry Faces Foundation benefit coming up after the holidays. Here’s the news release:

What is ‘Heels For Hounds,” you ask? It’s the newest in a line of fun-(d)-raisers benefiting Furry Faces Foundation, a.k.a., F3.

“Ola Salon and Clementine Shoes are sponsoring this event in early 2013 and to be successful, we need donations of new or very gently worn, nice, women’s shoes,” says Rachel Karlin, Ola Salon owner. “During the event, shoes will be tastefully displayed at Ola Salon. You will be able to try them on and if the shoe fits, bid on them.’

Linda Walsh, owner of Clementine Shoes, explains, “Many of us purchase shoes for that special occasion or outfit, take very good care of them and are then ready for a new pair of shoes. So, why not clean out your closets and ‘upcycle’ them to benefit animals and their people? Who knows, you may even find a pair or two at the event that you can’t live without!”

“We are very excited about this new event,” says Teri Ensley, F3 Leader. “It’s a creative idea for a fundraiser and we appreciate Ola Salon’s and Clementine Shoes’ enthusiasm and support.’

If you have new or gently worn shoes to donate, please bring them to:

Ola Salon: 2942 Avalon Way SW; 206-933-6702
Clementine Shoes: 4447 California Ave SW; 206-935-9400
Hotwire Online Coffeehouse: 4410 California Ave SW; 206-935-1510
The Wash Dog: 6400 California Avenue Southwest; 206-935-4546; www.thewashdog.com/

Happening now: St. Nicholas Faire at First Lutheran Church of WS

Among the fairly long list of bazaars and arts/crafts sales during the holiday season, the St. Nicholas Faire at First Lutheran Church of West Seattle (4105 California SW) tends to stand alone … as an evening event. It’s not just a sale; it’s also a silent auction (with a variety of hand-assembled, uniquely themed gift baskets) …

… also there’s wine, a bake sale, and more. And it’s happening till 7 pm. Fundraiser for West Seattle Food Bank and West Seattle Helpline – FLC’s Pastor Ron Marshall has served on both organization’s boards:

$5 admission with a canned-food donation, $10 without (family admission capped at $15/$25).

Update on two local teenagers’ community toy-donation drive, Holidays 4 Hope, first noted here last week:

Clint Hewitt and Conrad Hill are pleased to announce that after meeting with Zippy’s Giant Burgers owner Blaine Cook this morning, the “Holidays 4 Hope” toy drive will have a donation bin at Zippy’s! The two Chief Sealth International High School seniors are collecting toys to brighten the holiday of local children. The next time you head to Zippy’s for one of their amazing burgers and vintage sodas, remember to take a new toy, book, or game to donate!

Zippy’s Giant Burgers at 9614 14th SW is the newest local site hosting a toy donation bin, joining the Original Bakery at 9253 45th Avenue Southwest, JC’s Deli at 9007 35th SW, as well as Chief Sealth International High School and Shorewood Christian School.

Please help us make a positive impact on the lives of local children and families for this holiday season! We are excited and grateful for the community support we are receiving for Holidays 4 Hope! Thank you to everyone hosting our holiday donation bins and bringing donations for the kids! We really appreciate every contribution!

Volunteer work that saves lives: Crisis Clinic needs help

We mention them in every WSBeat report, and every time our reporting touches on the issue of suicide. Today, we’ve received an announcement that Crisis Clinic – a life-saving resource for people all over the region – is looking for volunteer help:

Crisis Clinic has been helping individuals and families in need since 1964. From the beginning, volunteers have been the heart of our organization, providing caring and confidential support to callers on the 24-Hour Crisis Line.

Our programs have expanded greatly over the years, increasing our need for community volunteers. We now offer a variety of opportunities for both youth and adults, suited to meet each person’s interests and availability.

New volunteers are currently needed to:

· Answer calls on the 24-Hour Crisis Line or WA Recovery Help Line
· Respond online via Crisis Chat
· Mentor youth volunteers with Teen Link
· Make quality assurance calls for King County 2-1-1

We provide volunteers with professional training and supervision, ensuring they have the knowledge and skill to make a difference in the lives of our callers.

Applications are now being accepted for the next training session starting in January.

A West Seattle wetland needs you! Help @ Sanislo tomorrow

 |   Environment | How to help | West Seattle news

The weather looks better tomorrow – cloudy and only MAYBE showery – so here’s an outdoor idea:

Join us at Sanislo School the Saturday after Thanksgiving – to give thanks by giving back – and to work off those calories from feasting! We’re restoring the wetland headwaters of Puget Creek, a culturally significant watershed upstream of the Duwamish Tribe’s efforts to restore salmon habitat, and important to King County’s Wastewater’s efforts to improve water quality in the Duwamish River. It’s tree-planting time – evergreen trees reduce sewer overflows by intercepting winter rains. Come alone or bring a friend!

Time: 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM (Join for an hour or all day)

Where: Sanislo School Wetland; 1812 SW Myrtle … Meet at front of school.

What to bring: We have gloves and tools (write your name on any personal tools). Wear long sleeves/pants, sturdy shoes or boots, & hat/rain protection. Snacks and water provided.

West Seattle Thanksgiving 2012: Donation delivery

While checking in at Nickelsville late this morning, we found Teri Ensley of Furry Faces Foundation with a carload of donations – F3 is working with Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor) to accept and coordinate items including pet food. Just last night, Hotwire’s Lora Swift took this photo with the pile of donations that generous West Seattleites already had brought in:

Hotwire will accept donations at least through this weekend – they’ve just closed for the day but will be open again tomorrow (next to the Junction Post Office, 4410 California SW). The camp still has standing water:

In light of that, and with more storms on the way, Teri told us about one thing that’s needed now at the camp: Storage bins for what’s been donated, to keep it safe from the weather. If you decide to buy some, clear plastic is great so it’s easy to tell what’s inside, but ANYTHING would be gratefully accepted. On behalf of F3, Teri also said they’ve taken a cat from Nickelsville for treatment at South Seattle Veterinary Hospital in Top Hat, and if you’d like to contribute to its bill, you can contact SSVH. An overall wish list from the camp was shared with us last night, and you can see it on the WSB Facebook page.

Local students invite you to be part of ‘Holidays 4 Hope’ toy drive

West Seattle’s generosity has manifested yet again in the outpouring this week for flooded Nickelsville – and many other gestures of help, such as donations to food banks. Here’s another chance to give big, in small ways, this season: Chief Sealth International High School seniors Clint Hewitt and Conrad Hill are launching their senior project, a toy drive they’re calling “Holidays 4 Hope.” Above, they’re with the team at JC’s Deli, one of the dropoff spots they’ve already lined up, and they’re looking for more. Here’s their story:

Families continue struggling with the ongoing impact of a slow recovery from the great recession; we asked ourselves how we as high-school students might be able to help.

Knowing how young children look forward to the holidays, we decided to see if we could make a difference for some local families in the South Park Community area. Through local sponsors, we have purchased holiday donation bins that we have located throughout the West Seattle community. Our goal is to gather new toys, books, games and stuffed animals for ages 3-10 years old, to donate to the holiday party “Winter Fest” at South Park Community Center, who we are working with on this project. It is our intention that “Holidays 4 Hope” will continue and grow in future years.

Our greatest need at this time is making people aware of “Holidays 4 Hope”. Donation bins are located in local West Seattle businesses who are sharing the “Holidays 4 Hope” on their websites or e-mail notices to their customers. So far we have donation bins located in a few local businesses.

We have one located at The Original Bakery, owner Bernie Alonzo, who is a great supporter. Also, we have just placed a donation bin inside a new deli right on 35th ave across from the Southwest library called JC’s Deli, whose owner is Jeanette Cummings. I am hoping to have one more spot somewhere in West Seattle area to place a final donation bin that has already been sponsored. Since these businesses are helping me out, I hope they would get new and more customers from their great support. We are encouraged by the response so far, but realize that starting up this endeavor will require hard work and persistence.

So their request for you is twofold: 1. Donate toys at those dropoff spots; Original Bakery is at 45th and Wildwood in Fauntleroy’s Endolyne mini-business district; JC’s Deli is at 35th and Henderson, across from Southwest Library. Join Ms. Forsell‘s third-grade class from Shorewood Christian School, which has already done its part:

2. If you have a business that could host a dropoff bin, contact Conrad and Clint at crhill2013@gmail.com and c.hewitt206@gmail.com.

West Seattle holiday giving: Black Friday blood drive

November 21, 2012 4:30 pm
|    Comments Off on West Seattle holiday giving: Black Friday blood drive
 |   Health | How to help | West Seattle news

Out of the WSB inbox this afternoon, from Mike:

As an alternative to getting frustrated by all the Black Friday madness, please consider giving blood. Puget Sound Blood Center will be at Our Lady of Guadalupe on 35th Ave. on Black Friday for blood donations. It’s quick, easy and painless. Donation times are from 10-12 and 1-4 November 23rd, Black Friday. Donations are always needed, but especially this time of year. My father-in-law recently passed from cancer, but before he did, he utilized a substantial number of units of blood. This was made possible by members of the community who took the time to donate.

OLG is at 35th and Myrtle (map).

Vietnamese Cultural Center organizing volunteers again to offer free flu shots, haircuts, food on Thanksgiving

Vietnamese Cultural Center director Lee Bui sends word that the center, along with Puget Sound Pharmacy, will bring flu shots, haircuts, and hot food to Nickelsville tomorrow – as they did last Thanksgiving (WSB coverage here). It’s not only for Nickelsville residents, he says, but for others who are low-income/homeless, too – just show up. Along with pharmacist Rosalie Nguyen and Dr. Khanh H. Tran, volunteers will be there offering the service 11 am-1 pm on Thanksgiving Day. Nickelsville is at West Marginal Way SW/SW Highland Park Way.

Nickelsville flooding followup: What the encampment needs now

(Photos taken this morning by WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand)
For a while this midday, it was raining again – just as they’re trying to pump out the floodwaters at the homeless encampment on the southeast edge of West Seattle that calls itself Nickelsville, as it has since it was founded at that site four years ago, the site to which it returned a year and a half ago. After publishing these photos by WSB contributing photojournalist Nick Adams during Monday’s deluge, we went back this morning to see what’s needed, since many are asking. The campers we talked with said about half the residents had gone to emergency shelters when their tents became uninhabitable in the floodwaters. But even tiny residents are poking around, like Coffee the cat:

You may have heard via our friends at KING 5 News that a pump donated this morning was making progress in clearing out the standing water – before the rain resumed. Here’s what they told WSB they need:

Gas for the existing pump

Another pump, as this pump was donated but has to go back tomorrow morning

Dry blankets and dry bedding

Labor needs are up in the air, as they need to get the standing water out before they can determine what needs to be done

With donated items or any other offers to help, just show up at their main gate, which is off the small parking lot on the southwest side of the triangle of land they are on, at West Marginal Way and Highland Park Way.

SIDE NOTE – NICKELSVILLE’S FUTURE: The water woes are bringing new light to the camp’s situation – a year and a half without either authorization or eviction on a government-owned site. We’re waiting for a reply from Mayor McGinn’s office regarding its stance on what’s happening there. We also checked this morning with Food Lifeline, the nonprofit which is pursuing a possible purchase of the site, as reported here in October. From spokesperson Amy Lee Derenthal: “We’re still in conversations with both the city and state and nothing has changed since we first shared we were interested in the property for our Hunger Relief Center.”

12:59 PM UPDATE: We had asked Mayor McGinn’s office earlier today for comment on the situation and just got the official reply via spokesperson Aaron Pickus: “Our Human Services Department is working with Public Health to help place families with children in shelter tonight. We have opened our severe weather shelter at Seattle Center and are providing bus tickets to residents who wish to access shelter. Our shelters at City Hall and Frye Hotel are also open. Our Public Utilities and Finance and Administrative Services department are also assisting, as appropriate.”

West Seattle Thanksgiving: Free feasts; restaurants/stores; more

Two days till Thanksgiving! From the WSB West Seattle Holidays page, and updates we’ve received, some reminders today:

DONATE DESSERTS FOR HALL AT FAUNTLEROY’S FREE DINNER: West Seattle’s most famous free holiday meal is at The Hall at Fauntleroy on Thursday afternoon, noon-3 pm. They have the volunteer help and the main/side dishes – but what they REALLY need, we’re reminded by Carol from Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering, is donated desserts, whether you’re going to the dinner or not. You can drop off a dessert donation tomorrow (Wednesday) between 10 am and 3 pm, or after 9 am on Thanksgiving Day. The Hall is on the south side of the Fauntleroy Schoolhouse at 9131 California SW.

ANOTHER FREE THANKSGIVING DINNER: If you’re planning to dine a little later but would like to take advantage of a free feast just the same, join the West Seattle Eagles, whose annual “Thanksgiving to Remember” is 2-5 pm at their HQ next to the post office in The Junction.

LOOKING FOR A RESTAURANT OPEN THANKSGIVING? Here’s our list so far – we’ve made dozens of calls, but please let us know if something’s missing, or changed – editor@westseattleblog.com

WONDERING WHICH WEST SEATTLE GROCERY STORES ARE OPEN THANKSGIVING DAY? Here’s our list with that info.

FOOD BANK HELP BEFORE THE HOLIDAY: Here again are our updates on the West Seattle Food Bank and White Center Food Bank, both of whom are accepting donations through tomorrow (or, follow those links to their websites and give cash, which goes even further):
–WS Food Bank here – they tell WSB today that they need “canned hams for distribution to homeless communities”
–WC Food Bank here – they tell WSB today that the big need is “turkeys, turkeys, turkeys”

Again, all of this and MUCH more (including Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s info) is on the WSB Holidays page – which you can find any time from its red-type tab atop the page.

Two quick ways to help local schools in the running for $

MOUNT VIEW ELEMENTARY NEEDS BOOKS: West Seattleite Shoshanna Cohen, the ELL Interventionist at Mount View Elementary in White Center, asks for your help as they vie for a $5,000 grant to buy books. Many of the kids at MV Elementary speak Spanish as their first language, and the school has few books in Spanish – Cohen explains, “There is so much research showing that by promoting the student’s first language, their growth in their second language (English) is astronomical.” Just contribute a vote by going to this webpage and clicking the lower-right link that says VOTAR/VOTE. You’ll go to a page with the entries – look for the student in the Cat in the Hat-striped hat, and that’s for Mount View. Just click the “vote” link you’ll find with that specific photo, and that’s it, no strings attached. The contest runs through this weekend.

WEST SEATTLE STEM NEEDS TECH: And while we’re talking about online votes for school grants – West Seattle STEM Elementary (aka K-5 STEM) has a month left in their bid for a $50,000 tech grant – here’s our original story, which explains how to vote.

Holiday hunger-fighting: Beer Church Turkey Bowl; White Center Food Bank on the road

On the holiday hunger-fighting front … first, a few scenes from the Beer Church Turkey Bowl:

That’s West Seattle Food Bank‘s Charlie Workman during last night’s benefit at WS Bowl, as he rolled what turned out to be a strike:

According to the Beer Church Facebook page, Mission won the trophy … and the WS Food Bank is the big winner. Congrats again to tireless organizers Kendall and Kim Jones:

Their update says the final tally’s not in yet, but expects it to amount to “thousands and thousands” of donated dollars and pounds (of food).

This morning, we checked in on the White Center Food Bank‘s turkey collection, which hit the road for a pre-Thanksgiving dropoff stop outside Fauntleroy Church:

WC Food Bank executive director Rick Jump was there loading donated turkeys into the refrigerated van. He told us they’d seen a good turnout of donors during the dropoff window. You can also drop off food the next few days – and just as important, volunteer some hours to get it distributed – here are the specifics.

Happening now: Knitting, sewing to help Sandy storm survivors

That’s Virginia Bowen, owner of Seattle Yarn, with some of the hats/scarves/gloves made/donated so far on behalf of Superstorm Sandy survivors, as the knit-in/sew-in at Seattle Yarn and nearby Stitch & Sew Studio continues this afternoon. The photo is courtesy of Jen Boyer, who shared first word of the plan a week ago. Virginia is offering a dollar-off coupon for any item donated, handmade or not, through tomorrow. Other keep-warm items like blankets are welcome too. Seattle Yarn is at 5633 California SW; Stitch & Sew is at 5910 California SW.

Happening now: Next chance to stock the West Seattle Food Bank

We visited the West Seattle Food Bank just before their special donation-dropoff time wrapped up this afternoon, and operations director Steve Curry said thanks for everyone’s generosity – it had been “raining turkeys” during the three-hour window (but, he added, gesturing to what you see in the cooler in the photo, “it’ll all be gone by Wednesday”). Tonight, they would be happy to take your non-perishable food donations during the Beer Church‘s annual Turkey Bowl benefit at West Seattle Bowl; it’s just begun, and there’ll be someone there to accept your donation till 8 or so. If you can’t make it tonight, the food bank’s hours at its 35th/Morgan HQ are part of this “how to help” update we published a few days ago.

P.S. The White Center Food Bank serves part of West Seattle and its team will be at Fauntleroy Church tomorrow at 11 am with a refrigerated van to accept turkey donations – their overall holiday-help list is here.

Happening now: CoolMom in Fauntleroy, with don’t-idle advice

Out in the rain in their yellow safety vests, moms and kids from West Seattle-founded CoolMom are at the Fauntleroy ferry dock this afternoon, with a message for drivers as part of CM’s “Think Outside the Car” campaign. They’re distributing educational reminders including:

*10 seconds of idling uses more fuel than turning off the engine and restarting it

*An idling vehicle emits 20 times more pollution than one traveling 32 mph

*Idling 5 minutes daily emits 30 pounds of toxic pollutants and 300 pounds of carbon dioxide in a year

Idling, of course, is not just a ferry-line problem – drive-throughs are another place you can shut your engine off and help clear the air. You can get involved in the No-Idle Campaign with the info you’ll find here.

 |   How to help | West Seattle news | West Seattle people

“The crowd had a lot of energy,” marveled West Seattle Helpline executive director Tara Luckie, reflecting on last weekend’s fall fundraiser at the Duwamish Longhouse. She shared photos along with words of gratitude, “thanking West Seattle neighbors and businesses for making the night a success.”

All that enthusiasm, and accompanying generosity, means, Tara says, “We raised enough in donations to assist 80 West Seattle families with staying in their homes and keeping their lights and heat on this winter.” Featured speaker was State House Rep. Eileen Cody, who won another term in this month’s election.

Lots of other ways to help Helpline with its mission this holiday season – keep an eye on its website at wshelpline.org.

Fundraiser announced for South Park crash victims’ families

One of the two teenagers killed in last Sunday night’s South Park crash has been laid to rest: After her viewing in White Center and funeral Mass at Holy Family, 13-year-old Lucie Hernandez was to be buried at a cemetery in Tukwila this afternoon. A funeral Mass is planned Monday at St. Mary’s in the Central District for 16-year-old Luis Martinez, who was a student at TEC High School on the Evergreen campus in White Center.

The two boys who survived the crash are also Evergreen campus students, according to Highline Public Schools, at TEC and at the Arts and Academics Academy, while the third survivor has been identified as Lucie’s sister Karla, a ninth-grader at Chief Sealth International High School.

We had previously reported an account to help Luis’s family with expenses, accessible via any BECU branch, in the name of Victor Herrera, account number 3579847581. Donations were accepted at this past Wednesday’s Denny/Sealth concert (WSB coverage here). And tonight, we have the announcement of a benefit next Monday night (November 19th) to assist both Luis and Lucie’s families:

The event will be at Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant in Renton from 5 pm-9 pm. There will be a $10 buffet fee and a chance to drop off additional donations. Radio Variedades radio host Mercedes Garcia will be hosting the event live on the radio and encouraging the community to come and support. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to spread the word.

The restaurant is at 540 Rainier Avenue South (map).

Holiday hunger-fighting: Who’s given, and how you can give too

This morning, Mayor McGinn put out a call for Seattleites to donate food, money, and time to their local food banks. People in our area are already answering that call – here are updates we’ve collected in the past few days:

STUDENTS COLLECT TURKEY MONEY: Sharon from Union Gospel Mission shares the photo of Our Lady of Guadalupe School students Alex and Hope, who she says stood outside West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) for two hours last weekend and raised $274.39 to buy turkeys for UGM, inspired by a news report. She quotes Alex, 12, as saying: “Homeless people who come here for a meal is a blessing. I have food to last me through the night but homeless people don’t. And a meal helps them stay healthy and have a fuller stomach then they would otherwise,” and Hope, 13, as saying: “Food is important. Being homeless is hard. Some people starve to death. I wanted to make a difference. It feels good.”

CLINICS’ FOOD-DRIVE WRAPUP: You might recall our reports on Sound Physical Therapy organizing a food drive as a “competition” involving 9 PT clinics in the area, in honor of National Physical Therapy Month in October. Sound PT sent word that together, the participating clinics (all listed here) collected 1,500 pounds of food for the West Seattle Food Bank – three-quarters of a ton!

LAFARGE FOOD DRIVE, HAPPENING NOW: Lashanna at Lafarge sends a reminder of their monthlong drive – and an invitation for you to participate:

Just a community reminder that Lafarge needs your help with our annual food drive to benefit Northwest Harvest! Please drop off food at 5400 W. Marginal Way SW – there is a donation box right by the staircase and fountain!!!

WE(st) Seattle puts the “we” in community – we found the hummmmm ……. we built a park….. we can feed those in need too! Please donate today.

PRE-THANKSGIVING ‘FOODRAISER’ DANCE CLASS AHEAD: Jenna at Gildenfire is organizing this kids’ class for next Tuesday (November 20):

Next Tuesday I am going to teach a free-with-2-cans-of-food dance class for ages 2-4 with parent or caregiver to benefit the West Seattle Food Bank. The class will be 10:45 on Tuesday morning at Highland Park Improvement Club and is open to residents of West Seattle and White Center. The class is Creative Movement. We will do a Brain Dance Warm-Up, play some dance games like Freeze Dance and Underwater Adventure, do a Dancing Story and end with an amazing obstacle course and open play time for kids to practice their hula-hooping, somersaulting, mini-trampoline, ball skills and free dancing with scarves.

HOW TO HELP LOCAL FOOD BANKS DIRECTLY: Two days ago, we published the Thanksgiving-season needs lists for the WS Food Bank and for the White Center Food Bank. While the needs range beyond holiday turkeys, if you’re interested in giving those, there are special dropoff hours at WS Food Bank (35th and Morgan) this Saturday and at Fauntleroy UCC (9140 California SW) on behalf of WC Food Bank this Sunday. All the details are in the earlier reports:

WEST SEATTLE COMMUNITY ORCHESTRAS’ SUCCESS: If you haven’t yet been to a WSCO benefit – keep in mind that they are full of music, given the talent and creativity in the organization. The woodwind quintet above was just one of multiple performing acts last Saturday night at Highland Park Improvement Club – from left, Margaret Shields-Belisle, Kristin Delaney, Carole Smith, Dean Odenthal, Brenda Sullivan. The dinner, Trileigh reports, was “amazing”:

Though WSCO doesn’t have the official tally yet, orchestra manager Mariane Hermanson reports they expect to net the highest total ever – and that will help them continue to offer participation in the youth orchestras to any students who want to play.

THURSDAY NIGHT – WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL: The Fall Harvest Auction for WSHS is tomorrow at 5:30 pm at The Hall at Fauntleroy. The ticket deadline has passed but you can still help out by contributing a dessert and/or volunteering to help with setup 11 am-3 pm tomorrow. See the Westside Weekly online newsletter for details.

FRIDAY NIGHT – ARBOR HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY: Last-minute tickets are still available if you’d like to go to Arbor Heights’ dinner/auction, according to auction chair Lucy Weber. It’s also at The Hall at Fauntleroy, with doors open at 5:30 pm Friday, bidding starting at 6.. More details are on the auction’s Facebook page here, and on this event page. Tickets are $55 and you can contact Lucy at lucyweb2@yahoo.com to get yours.

Holiday giving: Here’s how you can help the West Seattle Food Bank

Earlier today, we shared the holiday-help request sent by the White Center Food Bank, and sent the West Seattle Food Bank an inquiry to see what it needs before Thanksgiving. Together, both serve thousands of families in this area. We’ve now heard back from West Seattle FB executive director Fran Yeatts:

The West Seattle Food Bank will be open to accept donations this Saturday, November 17th from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Perishable and non-perishable items will be gratefully accepted during this time. We will also offer tours of the facility and additional information on Food Bank operations for those interested.

Frozen turkeys and desserts like store-bought pies or pie shells and fixings are especially needed.

Non-perishable donations can also be accepted at the Turkey Bowl this Saturday from 5:30 PM– 8:00 PM at the West Seattle Bowl, 4505 39th Ave. SW. West Seattle Food Bank will also be open during our regular donation hours this week. During the week of November 19th, we will be open to accept donation Monday the 19th from 9:00 AM – 7 PM, Tuesday, November 20th from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, and Wednesday, November 21st from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Our address: 3419 SW Morgan. When delivering donations, pull into our parking garage off Morgan St. just east of 35th Ave. SW. Contact us at 206-932-9023 for additional information.

For West Seattle residents needing assistance with food over the holidays, the West Seattle Food Bank will be distributing Thanksgiving food during the following hours:
Monday, November 19th 9:15 AM – 11:00 AM for seniors only.
Monday, November 19th 4:00 PM – 7 PM for the general public.
Tuesday, November 20th 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM for the general public.

We will be closed on November 22nd and 23rd for the Thanksgiving holidays. Thank you.

Holiday giving time: How you can help the White Center Food Bank

Nine days till Thanksgiving, and even fewer days till local food banks’ holiday food pickups – so now’s the time to figure out how to help. The White Center Food Bank, which also serves southern West Seattle, is looking for volunteer helpers as well as food and money – plus, note that there is a turkey-dropoff opportunity in West Seattle this weekend, if you can’t get to White Center:

Do you have time next week to pass out food to clients at the White Center Food Bank at .10829 8th Ave SW. We need volunteers on the following shifts:

Monday, November 19 (9:30 to 12:30)
Tuesday, November 20 (9:30-12:30, 12:30-3:30 & 3:30-6:30)
Wednesday, November 21 (12:30-3:30 & 4:00 to 8:00)
If you can help, contact Audrey Zemke at audrey@whitecenterfoodbank.org or 206-762-2848. Families and kids welcome.
