The day after Thanksgiving has a new title. Yes, it’s already known as Black Friday. But this year, you can get the day going via West Seattle Track Friday. Between 9 am and 11 am on Friday, November 24th, at Hiawatha Playfield/Track (2700 California SW), West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor) and P3|Running welcome you to the West Seattle version of what they describe as …

… a community-based movement to mobilize people to support charitable giving. Participants run laps on a nearby track to raise awareness and funds for causes that they care about. Track Friday is held the day after Thanksgiving to encourage people to reunite with old and new friends, burn off some Thanksgiving Day calories, and put a little love and giving spirit back into a day that has become synonymous with commercialism.

P3 owner Michele Pettinger is raising money to fight Parkinson’s Disease, which her mom has, but you can choose your own charity too. You can just show up between 9 and 11 and walk/run whatever you choose to – and/or you can participate in fun events just added to the plan, a 400-meter dash for kids 11 and under at 9:30, an 800-meter dash for tweens/teens 12-17 at 10 am, and a 1-mile race for 18 and up at 10 am. All the details are in our calendar listing for Track Friday.

VIDEO: West Seattle Monster Dash 2017 proves monstrously fun

Some came in costume … some just came dressed as, well, runners and walkers. Our video shows the start of this morning’s sixth annual West Seattle Monster Dash at Lincoln Park, with hundreds joining the fun to raise money for West Seattle Cooperative Preschools. It’s an all-ages event:

(This year’s West Seattle Monster Dash was graced with much better weather than last year!) Almost 200 participants chose to be timed in the 5K, and you can see the results here.

Though this Friday’s Halloween Rainbow Bingo at the Senior Center of West Seattle is listed in our Halloween Etc. Guide – it’s sold out. Except for a sudden opening, as Mary Beth Ingersoll messaged us to say:

Our most popular Rainbow Bingo of the year is our Halloween Theme in October, tomorrow night, Friday, Oct. 27th. It has been sold out since September 30th, but we have some tickets! (This will be our 35th sold-out date in a row!)

I just got word that a table for 6 won’t be able to make it and we’d sure like to fill it. The first person to call me – 206.932.4044 extension 4 – with payment of for the 6 seats of $18/ea= $108.00 can have it.

Less than a week until Halloween – and only two days until trick-or-treat events begin! From the WSB West Seattle Halloween Etc. Guide:

PRESCHOOLER TRICK-OR-TREATING: All kids 5 and under are invited to Holy Rosary School 10 am-11:30 am on Friday, October 27th, to trick or treat in the school classrooms, with “a mix of candy and non-candy items.” (42nd SW/SW Genesee)

JUNCTION TRICK-OR-TREATING: Noon-2 pm Sunday, October 29th, during the second half of the West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival

FRIDAY NIGHT: Dinner and square dancing with Highland Park Elementary PTA!

The Highland Park Elementary School PTA invites you to have fun with them on Friday night – free! It’s the fourth annual Square Dance, 6-9 pm at the school (1012 SW Trenton), starting with dinner until 7, then dancing with a live string band. “All ages and abilities welcome (and) every kid goes home with a pumpkin.” No admission charge at all – dinner and dancing are free, as are the pumpkins – if you are able to donate, it’s a fundraiser for the PTA, but if not, they’ll still be thrilled to see you.

New plan this year for trick-or-treating in The Admiral District – merchants will welcome trick-or-treaters on Halloween – Tuesday, October 31st:

Admiral District merchants of West Seattle are proud to announce the return of the annual “Trick-or-Treating” event for 2017. This year the Admiral District “Trick or Treating” event will occur on Halloween, giving families the opportunity to trick or treat in a safe environment on the holiday itself. This long-standing Admiral neighborhood tradition has grown in popularity each year, and continues to be a West Seattle family favorite.

Trick or treating in the Admiral District is 100% volunteer-supported by the businesses operating near the intersection of Admiral and California Ave SW. Each year, local businesses give back to the community by providing a safe place for trick-or-treating. Find your favorite costume, grab the kids, and come out on Tuesday October 31st to join in on this popular West Seattle event!

Participating merchants will display the sign you see atop this story.

Fighting hunger is serious business – but that can be facilitated by fun, like the West Seattle Food Bank‘s games-drinks-and-auction fundraising party “A Grand Affair” in SODO Friday night. The folks who make the Food Bank run were among those mingling (and wrangling) at Westland Distillery – during our stop, we spotted WSFB executive director Fran Yeatts:

Development director Judi Yazzolino (below right) paused for the briefest of instants for a photo with Lora Swift, who by day is West Seattle Junction Association executive director but at “A Grand Affair” was volunteering:

If you haven’t figured it out already, the party was Roaring ’20s-themed, including a “speakeasy”-type entry at the door – below are WSFB’s operations manager Lester Yuh, operations/development assistant Karla Marifjeren, and operations director Steven Curry:

We also found WSFB board president Ben Viscon (who you likely know as winemaker for Viscon Cellars [WSB sponsor]):

Casino-style games enhanced the fun, with Vegas-style winning shrieks around the tables:

Those who preferred cards might have found themselves with a celebrity dealer, radio personality Jodi Brothers from 95.7 The Jet:

Others you might have recognized included Peel and Press (WSB sponsor) proprietor Dan Austin, pouring special cocktails:

Husky Deli‘s Jack Miller was there too, creating floats with his famous ice cream. And all around the venue, easels carried reminders of how and who the WSFB helps.

It’s not just about food – the Food Bank provides clients of all ages with more than 14,000 books a year, for example. So events like the second annual “Grand Affair” help WSFB nourish minds as well as bodies. Within a few days, we’ll know how much tonight’s event raised and we’ll update this story.

Enjoy playing cards? Make plans to be at Meeples Games (3727 California SW) on Thursday night to play a new card game with the local dad and daughter who created it. Their announcement:

West Seattle father and daughter team, Chad and Lillian Gray, invite you to come and play their new card game, Goatfish, at Meeples Games on Thursday, September 28, starting at 6:30 PM.

A love of playing tabletop games with friends and family evolved into a project to create their own game to share. They set out with three important goals: provide simple rules for players of all skill levels, have enough strategy to appeal to more serious gamers, and encourage people to laugh and have fun. Together, they created Goatfish, a silly, goat-themed card game that blends ideas from classic games like Go Fish and Uno with added strategy and humor.

They are launching their game on Kickstarter, September 26th, and in celebration are hosting a family game night at Meeples Games. There will be tables to play Goatfish with the creators and drawings for board-game giveaways selected from the extensive inventory at Meeples Games.

Thursday night’s event will run until 9 pm.

One of the largest sales in the 23-year history of the 2nd Time Sale is shaping up at Fauntleroy Church (9140 California Ave. SW). Bargains on nearly everything imaginable will overflow Fellowship Hall on Saturday, Sept. 16, 9 am – 4 pm, and again on Sunday, Sept. 17, 11:30 am – 2 pm. 10:46 AM: Not a cloud in the sky this year as the 10th annual West Seattle Car Show cruises through its first hour on the north side of the South Seattle College campus (6000 16th SW). Reasons to visit:

-Cars of every color and size, spanning decades
-If you drive yours here, free leak and light checks – ask as you enter the campus
-Music – DJ with the classics right now, The Disco Cowboys performing live at 1 pm
–Double Up food-truck tent serving “vegetarian Trinidad street food,” next to the …
–Northwest Wine Academy, with award-winning beverages
–Seattle Chinese Garden, free admission for its open house starting at 11 am
-50/50 raffle – tickets at the info booth on the northeast side of the show (look for the bright blue canopy)
-Free raffle for a drone – get a “bingo card” and have the vendor booths check off the boxes for you
-Motorcycles on display too
-Applaud the winners at the awards ceremony (~2:30 pm, with the show wrapping by 3 pm)

The show is presented again this year by West Seattle Autoworks and Swedish Automotive (which, like SSC, are WSB sponsors – and we are one of the show’s co-sponsors). No admission charge – just come wander!

12:18 PM: Tours of the SSC Automotive Technology program – which car-show proceeds are supporting – are set for 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm. Meantime, the stream of spectators continues, gawking at classics like this one:

1:06 PM: Our portable hotspot is a little glitchy up here at the show, so we’ll add many more photos from HQ later, including the winners, now about an hour and a half away from being announced. And The Disco Cowboys are about to start playing!

2:35 PM: They’re getting ready to hand out the awards – depending on how things go, we’ll either add the list and photos here, or publish a separate story (and we’d link to it here).

8:27 PM: We don’t have a simple list matching trophies to cars, so adding to this will take some time. But first – this 1960 Chrysler Imperial was a double winner – including the “people’s choice” trophy honoring the car show’s late founder Michael Hoffman:

This was the biggest show yet since the move to SSC, where, it was announced, next year’s show is already set for Saturday, August 25, 2018.

With a VERY big weekend ahead, we’re planning previews throughout the day today, starting with one more reminder about the 10th annual West Seattle Car Show, presented by West Seattle Autoworks and Swedish Automotive (WSB sponsors)! 10 am-3 pm tomorrow (Saturday, August 26th).

If you have a vehicle to show off – you can enter same-day – find the form (and fee info) here – load-in starts at 8 am on the north side of the Puget Ridge campus of South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor). Show proceeds support SSC’s Automotive Technology program.

If you’re planning on being a spectator, entry is free, and the show is more than just a chance to look at cars – there’s music – the Disco Cowboys, live! as well as a DJ – kids activities, vendors, the Double Up food truck (Caribbean cuisine), other adjacent attractions including SSC’s acclaimed Northwest Wine Academy and the Seattle Chinese Garden (which is having an 11 am-4 pm open house), and a chance to get your own car checked out for oil leaks and bulb safety (just mention it to the parking volunteers when you arrive).

7:02 PM: Until 8 pm, Caspar Babypants is onstage – with and without photobombing fans like the one above! – on the east lawn at Hiawatha Community Center. Again this year, his bouncy kindie-rock is closing out the Admiral Neighborhood Association-presented Summer Concerts at Hiawatha series – this is the sixth of this year’s six free Thursday night concerts.

That was the view across a sea of showgoers during last August’s Summer Concerts at Hiawatha finale, starring the same performer who’s closing out this year’s series too – Caspar Babypants. Showtime is 6:30 pm this Thursday (August 24th), on the east lawn at Hiawatha Community Center (2700 California SW, but the lawn is along Walnut SW, south of SW Lander). New here? Caspar Babypants is the yellow-T-shirted kindie-rock alter-ego of Seattle rock star Chris Ballew, and his songs not only charm the littlest music fans, they will also likely leave you with an earworm or two, too.

AT THE LIBRARY: Still space in free ‘Minecraft and Reading’ next 3 days

2:55 PM: Today’s eclipse event was just one of many cool things at local Seattle Public Library branches, as often featured in our calendar and daily highlight lists. Dave at Southwest Library just e-mailed with the news that there’s still room for a Tuesday-Thursday kids’ program that he promises will be “great”:

Minecraft and Reading is a technology-based Reading/Art class. Students will use the widely popular Minecraft game to create artistic representations of popular storybook scenes. They learn technology skills, and hone their artistic sensibilities. They have opportunities to work collaboratively and to develop leadership skills through class presentations.

This is a three-part series and will take place from 2:30-4 on Tuesday 8/22, Wednesday 8/23, and Thursday 8/24. Please call Southwest Library at 206-684-7455 to register. Online registration is closed, but registration is still possible.

The branch is at 9010 35th SW.

One week from today, you’re invited to the 10th annual West Seattle Car Show, presented by West Seattle Autoworks and Swedish Automotive (WSB sponsors)! 10 am-3 pm on Saturday, August 26th, it’s taking over the north side of the Puget Ridge campus of South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor), with vehicles old and new to admire, plus music – the Disco Cowboys, live! as well as a DJ – kids activities, vendors (not just vehicle-related – jams, jellies, and pickles too), plus food trucks – Double Up (Caribbean cuisine) is already confirmed. Check out SSC programs including Automotive Technology, which show proceeds help support, and the Northwest Wine Academy. As a co-sponsor again this year, we’ll be there too, covering the show as it happens, so come say hi. Spectators get in free.

P.S. It’s not too late to get your vehicle into the show – pre-registration has ended but same-day registration is available; find the form here – load-in starts at 8 am on show day.

P.P.S. Even if you’re not entering your vehicle, yours will be eligible for free leak inspections during the show courtesy of “Don’t Drip and Drive” as well as free bulb checks via “Lights On For Safety.”

What better way to let your kids learn about bees and their vital role in our ecosystem, than by taking them to the West Seattle Bee Garden for Kids’ Day, presented by the Puget Sound Beekeepers Association? Above, you can watch the bees without getting too close. Earlier, it was story time:

And the grownup visitors might be interested in buying honey to support the nonprofit PSBA:

The event’s on until 2 pm. The WS Bee Garden is on the north end of High Point Commons Park – scroll down this page for a map.

7:06 PM: Feel like dancing? The east lawn at Hiawatha Community Center is doing dance-floor duty right now with The Disco Ballz performing @ the Admiral Neighborhood Association‘s second-to-last Summer Concerts @ Hiawatha show. Of course, it’s also OK to just sit there and listen, whatever your preferred self-provided seating might be:

The show’s on until 8 – while Hiawatha’s official address is 2700 California SW, the east lawn is along Walnut, south of Lander.
