We just talked to Seattle Police, who say they are looking for a suspect in a reported break-in in the 4500 block of 23rd SW [map]. They do have a partial description; black, male, 6’2″, dreadlocks, dark top and red shorts, last seen leaving on foot. If you have any information, call 911.

First contact just north of school, Delridge and Juneau. Drove around the block and approached again on the next block, across from Super 24. She didn’t report to me until I got home from work.

Dear STEM families,
It has been an exciting start to school, and with the increase of students on the streets while walking to and from school or their bus stops, there may be situations that challenge our students’ personal safety. I want to take this opportunity to let you know we are working with the Seattle Police Department to ensure our students are taught about personal safety and highlight an incident where a student responded successfully to a situation.
Around 3:45 p.m. yesterday, one of our students reported a male in his late 20s in a white compact sedan tried to engage her in conversation twice as she walked home from school. The student responded appropriately and remained safe. Police were notified, and as of today, the Seattle Police Department is continuing to gather additional information and working closely with the District’s Safety and Security Department. Although in this incident there was no specific attempt to get the student into the car, we wanted to make sure parents are alerted.
Our school also wants to make sure students both feel safe and are safe, therefore staff will be discussing personal safety with our students. During these discussions, our goal is to allow students to talk about their concerns and give them additional personal safety skills.
You can also help your children simply by talking and listening to them. A following link to Seattle Police Department’s “Personal Safety for Children” may be helpful in family discussions: http://www.seattle.gov/police/community-policing/youth-safety-tips. We encourage you to be sensitive to your child and to call us if we can help in any way.

As Delridge grows and changes, one thing has remained the same: Its lack of a grocery store.
What is now the Delridge Grocery Cooperative has been working on that for years. And its board members were heartened to see the latest sign of interest – a full room at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center for the co-op’s “town hall” this past Wednesday.
As noted in our preview published two nights earlier, the centerpiece of the meeting was the unveiling of the Delridge Grocery Co-op “market study,” professionally conducted research that had to be done before they apply again for the loan that’s needed to get the store open in its long-reserved space at 5444 Delridge Way SW.
There to hear about it, and ask questions, was a roomful of people from longtime co-op members to former board members to current board members, even newly interested neighbors saying they “just want to help.”
And it will take all that help, and more, to make the dream of a store finish coming true. “When we cut the ribbon, I’m riding in on a white horse,” joked Delridge Grocery board president Andrea Wilmot.
Here’s what was reported, asked, and answered during the hour-plus-long meeting:
Over the next few days, we’ll be publishing a variety of back-to-school updates, since most schools will start classes next week (if they haven’t started already – here’s the list we compiled).
Tonight – we’re noting that this year brings a milestone for Louisa Boren STEM K-8: Starting with 2017-2018, it’s finally a full-fledged K-8, adding the final grade level of middle school. This Seattle Public Schools “option school” opened in fall 2012 as STEM K-5, then three years later not only formally started the roll-up to add middle school, but also added Louisa Boren to its name, after the namesake of the building at 5950 Delridge Way SW, known as Louisa Boren Junior High School when it opened in 1963. The expansion announcement we published in 2015 noted, in part:
… It’s fitting that STEM K-8 is located in the Louisa Boren building because Louisa herself loved science, particularly chemistry, botany and astronomy. “Liza” had a love of learning and a natural curiosity about the world.
Louisa Boren’s legacy continues today. Not only in the city of Seattle and the brave pioneering spirit she engendered, but also in her hard work supporting the women’s suffrage movement and her advocacy for Chinese workers settling in the area. …
Speaking of the building, one issue remains unresolved as the new school year begins Wednesday: The district raised the spectre before the end of last year that the school might be moved so that SPS could return the Boren building to its previous use as an “interim site.” That was the subject of a raucous meeting three months ago; we asked school district spokesperson Tom Redman about a month ago where that stood, and he replied, “We told the June community meeting attendees we would report back with an update in either August or September.” Since August has come and gone without an update, looks like that means we’ll hear something this month.
P.S. The SPS change to a two-tier schedule means a big change for STEM K-8 this year; they were one of the few left on the now-abolished third tier, so the 8:55 am start time this year is significantly earlier than last year. School will be out 3:25 pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays; district-wide, Wednesdays are early-release days, and STEM K-8 will be out at 2:10 pm those days (except for the first day of school).

The dream of a grocery store on Delridge is still alive and well, and closer than ever to reality.
How close? You’ll hear for yourself at Wednesday night’s “town hall” (6:30 pm, Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, 4408 Delridge Way SW).
The Delridge Grocery Co-op board will tell you what was revealed by a professional market study whose results are now in.
Two years ago, a lender who turned down the co-op for a loan cited the lack of such a study as one big reason.
Now its findings have news that should improve their chances on the next try.
Board members are optimistic enough that they’ve launched the process of applying for permits for the store buildout in the 1,500-square-foot space that’s been waiting for it ever since the Downtown Emergency Service Center opened Cottage Grove Commons (5444 Delridge Way SW) almost four years ago. (They are working with North Delridge architect Parie Hines of LD Arch Design, a WSB sponsor.) The project was not originally intended to have commercial space, but community clamor led to its addition, with the grocery store in mind from the start.
That’s the newly renovated meeting hall that’s headquarters to Disabled American Veterans Chapter 23 in North Delridge, and they are inviting you to come visit on Labor Day (Monday, September 4th), with a pancake breakfast 9 am-noon, and an open house noon-3 pm.
Leo Potts from DAV #23 says, “We want to invite the community, especially veterans, to the open-house event! Enjoy hot cakes, sausage, and hot coffee, then take a tour of our facility. Learn of the free services and assistance offered to our American veterans.” The hall is at 4857 Delridge Way SW.
4:18 AM: Seattle Fire has a “full response” arriving at a possible house fire in the 4700 block of 26th SW [map].
4:26 AM: The fire is described via radio communications as “well-involved” on at least one side of the house – mostly exterior but partly extended into the house’s kitchen.
4:38 AM: The fire also is reported to have extended into the attic. Two more engines have been requested. Our crew is just arriving.
4:51 AM: This is not yet under control, firefighters have radioed, and our crew verifies they’re continuing to haul more hoses toward the house; they’re also reporting roof collapse on a shed-type structure behind the main house. No injuries reported so far, and they’re dismissing a medic unit.
4:56 AM: Now it’s been declared under control.
5:07 AM: … now “tapped” in both structures, and they’re calling for the investigator to find out how this started.
5:29 AM: That official determination won’t come until later this morning, but SFD spokesperson Capt. Shata Stephenson just talked with us at the scene and says the fire appears to have started toward the back of the house, which actually has two non-residential structures behind it, and the one with the roof collapse is the one all the way at the rear of the lot. Two people were home at the time, both checked out for possible smoke inhalation, but both found to be OK. We’ve also confirmed that the address is 4737 26th SW. Crews will be here at least another hour, so you’ll want to avoid 26th SW – which is an official greenway – in this area.
10:35 AM: SFD says the fire was accidental, started by a candle; damage totals $150,000 to the structure, $100,000 to contents.
8:09 PM: Police are at 16th and Barton investigating a reported exchange of gunfire, and radio discussion says they have found shell casings, but no victims, and that those who were involved are believed to have gotten into at least two vehicles and left. More to come.
8:19 PM: If you heard/saw a helicopter, that was Guardian One looking around for anything matching what descriptions police have so far of the vehicles – white mid-2000s Mercedes SUV, and a black vehicle.
8:25 PM: Our crew has talked with police at the scene. No property damage so far as they can tell; they say they have found one confirmed shell casing, 9mm. Along with the aforementioned white SUV, the description of the second vehicle involved is now black or blue. By the way, if you’re a bit south of the scene and noticing police pulled over with a silver car, near 15th/Roxbury, that’s NOT believed to be related – they noticed plates on the car that were reported as stolen, and pulled it over.
8:40 PM: Our crew says police are wrapping up at the scene. No further reports of progress on finding those responsible, but if you have any information, call 911.
8:44 PM: Now police are investigating a report that one nearby residence was hit by a bullet.
9:31 PM: We went back over to find out more about that. Police confirm that a bullet went into an apartment two buildings south of Barton, along the alley between 16th and 17th.
No injuries.
SIDE NOTE: From SPD’s latest SeaStat briefing last week (last page here), the Southwest Precinct – West Seattle and South Park – has had 41 confirmed “shots fired” (meaning confirmed because of shell casings and/or property damage and/or victims), second after the South Precinct, which has had 111.
It’s been a long road for the Delridge Grocery Co-op. Is their food store getting close to reality? The “professional market study” mentioned in our update last September is in, and DGC says “the results are favorable” but – “there is a lot to think about.” They hope you can help with that by showing up for their next step: A town-hall meeting 6:30 pm Wednesday, August 30th, at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center (4408 Delridge Way SW).
4:48 PM: On the Delridge Way pedestrian overpass at SW Oregon, Hate-Free Delridge is keeping its promise of “standing for peace.” The photo above shows the signs and their holders facing southbound traffic; several are facing the northbound lanes too, with signs including “Words Not Warheads” and “Peace and Justice on Earth.” Their plan, as first announced Sunday – with the explanation “We need to be heard. We need to speak out” – is to be here until about 6 pm, and you’re welcome to join them. Lots of honking from passing drivers so far.

5:08 PM: More people continue arriving to join the demonstration, all ages including a family with two kids who just walked up.

5:36 PM: The signs span many sentiments – now from left to right on the NB-facing side, No H8, Peace and Love, Enough!, Black Lives Matter, Abolish Nuclear Weapons, Respect Indigenous Rights, (“no” symbol) Naz, No War No Hate, Words Not Warheads, Hate-Free Zone, “Sure He’s An Ignorant Bigot, But He’s Our Ignorant Bigot, Support Bigot Trump,” No War, Build Unity, Peace and Justice on Earth, and a few with lettering just out of our reading range. The only sound of dissent we’ve heard, hanging out here by the overpass for 45 minutes – someone in a dugout at Delridge Playfield behind us yelled “Trump all the way!” likely out of earshot for those up on the overpass.
6:01 PM: This was scheduled to end about now, but demonstrators are still up on the overpass, and new signs have continued to appear. One that we just noticed says, “We Love You, Heather,” in remembrance of Heather Heyer, the woman killed by the driver who plowed into the counter-demonstrators at the white-supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend.
6:07 PM: It’s now breaking up. If you’re wondering “what’s next?” we’ve just been told that Hate-Free Delridge and other groups will join West Seattle Neighbors for Peace and Justice in The Junction on Sunday, noon-1 pm, and you’re invited to that gathering too – bring a sign if you want to.

It’s been almost exactly a year since we first reported on the birth of Hate-Free Delridge in the wake of a racist attack on a local family.
11:33 AM: It’s on! Delridge Day 2017 has begun in the park outside Delridge Community Center (4501 Delridge Way SW), celebrating east West Seattle with music, vendors, community groups, food, skating, and fun. First, the entertainment schedule, on the main stage by the community center – the first band, Yesod, has just finished; here are the music and dance performances that are coming up:

1 pm – Galaxy
1:40 pm – Dance Brazil
2 pm – Massive Monkees
There’s a second stage on the west side of the park, too, which is also where you’ll find Seattle Police with their Picnic at the Precinct – which includes free hot dogs and ice cream:

At the skatepark on the northeast side of the park, Skate Like a Girl is offering three free skateboarding clinics, at noon, 12:45, and 1:30 pm.
And in the rest of the park, you’ll find dozens of community groups and vendors. We’re here too, and will be walking around shortly to get a list. Right across from us – West Seattle Food Bank, West Seattle Helpline, the 34th District Democrats, the West Seattle Democratic Women. We also know ORCA 2 Go is here, if you need an ORCA card. Right next to us – the information booth, so you can talk to the festival’s community organizers.
One more thing to mention – right after the festival, 3-10 pm, Ounces is having a Delridge Day afterparty – live music and beer, with $1 of “select pints” being donated toward next year’s festival costs! Ounces is at 3809 Delridge Way SW. More Delridge Day coverage to come!

Just hours away from this year’s Delridge Day festival, again featuring Picnic at the Precinct, all happening 11 am-3 pm Saturday at Delridge Community Center park. The festival offers a variety of family fun – including activities at Delridge Skatepark – and the chance to meet your neighbors, including many local organizations. We’ll be on scene to report on who’s there and what’s happening, so check here for updates. And if you haven’t been before, here’s what’s offered at the precinct “picnic,” as Crime Prevention Coordinator Jennifer Burbridge describes it:
Precinct Picnics provide opportunities for each precinct’s surrounding neighborhoods to come together and enjoy an afternoon of celebration with the officers that protect their families and businesses. Businesses financially support the event through donations and community groups assist in the planning and execution of each picnic.
The first Picnic at the Precinct was held in September 2004 at the East Precinct. Since then, the Picnic in the Precinct program has grown to include all five precincts. Thousands of Seattle residents enjoy food, music, and an opportunity to learn about and interact with many of the Department’s units, including K-9, Mounted Patrol, Bomb Squad, and SWAT.
They usually bring treats, too. See you at Delridge Day tomorrow!
Still a lot of West Seattle summer fun ahead. The next festival is coming up next Saturday – Delridge Day 2017, 11 am-3 pm on August 12th at Delridge Community Center park. The fun includes kids’ activities, skating clinics at adjacent Delridge Skatepark, music, vendors, community groups, food, and local police presenting the “Picnic at the Precinct” section. Where a burned-out former auto shop (above) now sits at the corner of Delridge and Henderson, a sawtooth-edged 31-apartment building will rise, if the project that just made it out of the first stage of Design Review gets built.
All four appointed-volunteer members of the Southwest Design Review Board – chair Matt Zinski, Alexandra Moravec, Don Caffrey, and Crystal Loya – voted to advance the project to the second and final stage. This was their first look at the project – the Early Design Guidance phase – which focuses on “massing” (size, shape, placement on site). Here’s the design packet put together for the review:
Along with the board members and architects, assigned city planner Abby Weber was at the meeting, plus two members of the public, West Seattle neighborhood advocates Kim Barnes and Diane Vincent. Both spoke during community-comment time. But first = here’s how the meeting began:
5:38 AM: Seattle Fire has a “full response” arriving at a house in the 9200 block of Delridge Way SW [map].
5:44 AM: SFD describes the house as small and “boarded up.” Firefighters spotted a hole in the floor so they are fighting the fire “defensively” – from outside. Avoid that area of Delridge, as it’s an extensive response, blocking the road.
5:54 AM: Our crew is there; we’ve added a photo. It’s the same house that had a fire back in May, and a deadly fire three years earlier. No word of injuries in this fire so far; firefighters report it’s under control. Note that the address on the SFD log right now is NOT accurate – 9226 is the address for the auto shop to the south, which is NOT involved.
6:04 AM: Some of the SFD units are being dismissed. No one inside, no one hurt, so far as firefighters have determined (update: as of a few minute later, they’re searching again). SFD’s investigator has been summoned to find the fire’s cause. Metro Route 128 is being rerouted, according to an alert just texted/tweeted.
6:27 AM: Route 60 is rerouted too. Meantime, our crew is back and we’ve added another photo. We’ve checked the property’s history, in light of the multiple fires; no complaints listed since 2015, and no redevelopment plans on file.
7:15 AM: Metro says buses are back to regular routes.
12:15 PM: SFD spokesperson Lt. Sue Stangl tells WSB the fire investigator could not determine what caused today’s fire, so it will remain officially “undetermined.”

REDEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL AT 5214 DELRIDGE WAY SW: An early-stage proposal has just appeared in city files to redevelop this site [map], which has been remodeled incrementally in recent years and now houses multiple small businesses. The new proposal is described as follows:
Demolition of existing commercial structure and construction of new 3600 sf mixed use building and (4) townhouse units. Mixed use building to include (2) commercial spaces and (4) Small Efficiency Dwelling Units (SEDU). Parking for (6) vehicles to be provided on site.
(SEDU is the city’s term for microstudio apartments.) Again, it’s an early-stage proposal, just beginning its journey through the potential permitting process.
SEE THE DESIGN PACKET FOR 8854 DELRIDGE BEFORE FIRST REVIEW: Two miles south, 8854 Delridge Way SW [map] goes to the Southwest Design Review Board for the first time on Thursday night (August 3rd). We first reported a year ago that a mixed-use project was planned for the site of a burned-out former auto shop. The design packet describes as “a new 4-story building over a below-grade parking garage level with 31 apartment micro-units, retail (café) space, and 15 enclosed parking stalls.” Here’s the packet by Sazei Design Group:

Heads up, in case you see the “No Parking” signs and/or plan to be on the road in the early morning – three portable classrooms will be removed from the Louisa Boren STEM K-8 campus next week, to be relocated to other schools outside West Seattle. The information just received from Seattle Public Schools spokesperson Tom Redman says one portable will be moved from Boren (5950 Delridge Way SW) to Ballard High School early Tuesday (August 1st), and two will be going to Ingraham High School, one each on Wednesday and Thursday (August 2-3). For all moves, Redman says, they’ll be moved via a southbound/eastbound route:
Transports will leave from Louisa Boren at about 3:00-4:00 a.m. to meet SDOT requirements for transports to be off city streets by 6:00 a.m.
These transports are coordinated with required SDOT transport permits and will be accompanied by Seattle Police escorts for additional traffic control as they leave Louisa Boren and head south on Delridge Way towards Roxbury and further to Hwy 509 as they leave West Seattle.
“No parking” signs will be installed on the streets along the north side of Louisa Boren, in order to allow for adequate width in the roadway for the trucks to maneuver the oversized loads.
Additional “no parking” signs may be placed at different locations along the route to allow for adequate width in the roadway.
P.S. While it’s not directly related to this, you might be wondering where the possible move of STEM K-8 itself stands, now that almost two months have passed since the district-led meeting about it. We’re checking on that.
