 |   Announcements

From Safe Futures Youth Center, which is based in West Seattle:

Resolution blues got you down? It is not too late to get involved in your community and get fit at the same time!

Safe Futures is looking for runners and walkers to participate with Safe Futures staff and board this summer in Seattle Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon: a winning combination! This event is Safe Futures most important fundraiser in 2010! Please consider walking or running with Team Safe Futures at the Rock and Roll Run, held in Seattle on June 26, 2010!

The Rock and Roll event offers an exhilarating and fun half and full marathon. We are recruiting people willing to commit to walk or run and gather pledges on behalf of Safe Futures Youth Center. Our goal is to raise $250.00 per person, with pledges from friends, family, co-workers and neighbors. All proceeds from the Rock and Roll Event will directly support a wide range of youth programs at SFYC.

Located in West Seattle, Safe Futures Youth Center (SFYC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has become a destination point for hundreds of kids. The agency has produced impressive outcomes and proven itself as one of the most effective youth-serving organizations in Seattle. SFYC provides culturally competent youth leadership, case management, and school support programs. It is rare that an organization can work with young people at numerous levels of personal development. Through its success, SFYC has expanded programming to the White Center and Rainier Beach communities in addition to serving youth in the greater West Seattle area, such as, Delridge, High Point and White Center. To learn more about Safe Futures, find more details at: http://sfyc.net

How To Participate in this Event and Raise Funds at the Same Time:

1. Register for the Rock and Roll Run Marathon or Half Marathon at: http://www.halfmarathons.net/usa_half_marathons_washington_seattle_rock_and
Cost is $80.00-$100.00 to participate. Hurry, because race slots fill up fast! Go to:

2. Join us by e-mailing markjmanuel@yahoo.com and we will send you a team packet.

3. Attend the SFYC Open House for a runners gathering on March 13, 2010. You will learn more about Safe Futures Youth Center and meet other members of Team Safe Futures, including staff, Board members and supporters.

4. Start gathering pledges on behalf of Safe Futures Youth Center. We are a Registered, not for profit organization and donors will receive a letter acknowledging their donation.

4. Participate in any of the fun, group training runs/walks we have scheduled for Team SFYC. It’s a great way to stay or get in shape and meet new people at all levels of fitness. This year we anticipate a large walking group.

5. Sport your Team Safe Futures T-Shirt on race day.

If you don’t want to run or walk? Then, consider making a pledge. We will do the work for you. Donate online at the Safe Futures’ Website: http://www.sfyc.net/donatenow.html
Be sure to indicate your name in the memo field so we can be notified as soon as you make your donation.

Please contact Mark Manuel at 206-948-9794 or via e-mail at: markjmanuel@yahoo.com. Your efforts will go a long way to keep the youth center doors open in this tough economic climate.

WHERE: TwAC Gallery / WEST SEATTLE JUNCTION

WHEN: Opening Reception during the West Seattle Art Walk Thursday, March 11, from 6 to 9 PM

In a time when many people are scaling back on luxuries, how do we keep the momentum and interest in collecting art going? How about by making it so irresistible that it’s a necessity?

TwAC artist Kate Protage is on a mission: to give people more opportunities to collect art that speaks to them, that’s also affordable and accessible.  |   Announcements

From West Seattle-based Twelfth Night Productions:

Twelfth Night Productions (TNP) is proud to open its spring production, The Miss Firecracker Contest, by Beth Henley on Friday April 9 at the Youngstown Cultural Center in West Seattle.

The Miss Firecracker Contest is set in the small town of Brookhaven, Mississippi and centers around its annual beauty pageant, the titular Miss Firecracker Contest. Young and attractive Carnelle is trying out for the pageant as a way to elevate her somewhat tarnished reputation. Together with her recently returning cousins, Elain and Delmount, she is determined to leave her small town life behind her in a blaze of glory. Meanwhile, Popeye, her seamstress, has fallen in love with the deeply intense Delmount, but hides her feelings behind stories of her eccentric life. Once they all make it to the contest, they meet up with Mac Sam and Tessy, two characters who have an intimate knowledge of two of our protagonists. It all comes to a head with the crowning of the one and only Miss Firecracker and the yearly fireworks display.

The Miss Firecracker Contest runs in a special limited engagement at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle. Show times are: April 9, 10, 16 and 17 at 7:30 PM and April 11 and 18 at 3 PM. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors and are available online at brown paper tickets (www.brownpapertickets.com), at Square One Books at Jefferson Square (4724 42nd Avenue SW) and at the Youngstown Theater (4408 Delridge Way SW, Seattle, WA 98106) on performance days.

Duwamish Tribe fundraiser at “life or death moment”

From the Duwamish Tribe:

The Duwamish Tribe is inviting Seattle to a Frybread for Justice fundraiser to benefit the Duwamish Legal Fund to support its court case for tribal federal recognition–to date about $60,000 of $128,000 needed for expert witness fees has been raised.

Cecile Hansen, the Tribal Chairwoman and direct descendant of Chief Seattle, has been asking the people of Seattle for help. “If everybody in Seattle gave us one dollar, we would be able to raise the money for our legal defense fund to appeal the 2001 negative determination. We are not asking Seattle to give us back our land, just a little help to find justice.”

Event: Frybread for Justice

Suggested donations: $6 for Indian Taco & Drink and $2 for Frybread
Free admission to Longhouse exhibits & continuous showings of “Princess Angeline” film in exhibit area. This film chronicles the life of the daughter of Chief Seattle and is told through the members of the Duwamish tribe with the struggle of federal status as a theme.
