Just announced by West Seattle-based Twelfth Night Productions:

Twelfth Night Productions Celebrates Fifteen Years Producing Theater with How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying and a Partnership with FareStart

Twelfth Night Productions (TNP) is excited to celebrate our fifteenth year producing theater with How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. In addition to producing high quality, community theater and providing an artistic outlet for residents of the Puget Sound, each summer TNP has partnered with a local charitable non-profit organization. Donating a portion of the proceeds from each summer show, TNP has helped such organizations as the Delridge Neighborhood Development Association, the All City Band and the White Center Food Bank among others. This year we are proud to partner with FareStart, a culinary job training and placement program for homeless and disadvantaged individuals.

Both a Tony Award winning show and Pulitzer Prize winning book, How To Succeed In Business without Really Trying follows the rise of J. Pierrepont Finch as he uses a little handbook called “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying” to climb the corporate ladder from lowly window washer to high-powered executive. Along the way he tackles such familiar but potent dangers as the aggressively compliant “company man,” the boss’ whiny nephew, the office party, backstabbing co-workers, a caffeine addiction and of course true love.

Show times are August. 6, 7, 14, 20, 21 at 7:30 p.m., with matinees at 3 p.m. on August. 8, 15 and 22 (PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO SHOW ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 13th). The show is playing at West Seattle High School Theater, 3000 California Ave SW. Tickets are available online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/86033, in person at Square One Books in Jefferson Square, and at West Seattle High School on performance days (3000 California Ave SW, Seattle, WA 98116). Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $12 for students & seniors.

An extra-special addition to the next FEEST potluck – here’s the official announcement:

YOUTH-LED COMMUNITY DINNER AND DIGITAL STORY SCREENING AT YOUNGSTOWN

Bridges to Understanding youth-produced digital stories will screen at the youth-led Food Empowerment Education Sustainability Team (FEEST) community potluck dinner on Wednesday, June 30 at 5:45pm at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center Theatre in the Delridge neighborhood of West Seattle.

Supported by a grant from the Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs’ Youth Arts Program, the digital stories were produced by middle and high school students from throughout Seattle during their participation in Bridges’ after-school digital storytelling programs.

“Focusing on a community gardening project at Aki Kurose Middle School and service learning projects conducted by Global Visionaries in Guatemala, production of the stories gives students experience in research, writing, photography and multimedia production in addition to global awareness,” notes Bridges Program Director Tania Westby. “FEEST brings young people together to prepare and share healthy, delicious food, learn about growing food as well as provide a space for youth to become actively engaged in issues of food resources and built environment in their communities. It’s a great combination!”

The event is free of charge and open to the general public. Adults are requested to bring a prepared food item (local and organic) or drink and are asked to stay to help clean up the space. Wednesday, June 30, 5:45 pm. Youngstown Cultural Arts Theatre, 4408 Delridge Way SW, Seattle. For more information: 206.925.5301.

Just sent in by the office of Terry Gangon:

West Seattle is having a community car wash benefiting the West Seattle Food Bank and Haiti through World Vision. The car wash will take place on Friday, June 25th between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets are being presold for $10 each; you can purchase a ticket and get your car washed at Keller Williams Realty at 4452 California Ave SW; John L Scott Realty at 5242 California Ave SW and State Farm Insurance at 4727 44th Ave SW. Tickets may also be purchased at both Windermere locations, West Seattle Realty and Prudential Northwest Realty in Jefferson Square.

This idea was spawned by need! For just $1000 our local food bank can provide 300 bags of groceries delivered to the homebound elderly and disabled members of our community. The demand in our community for food has gone up during the recession. Some of you may have seen the report on Haiti that Frontline did last week on Public TV. The circumstances that millions are facing with respect to housing, food and clean water is mind numbing. In one tent city alone, there was only one bathroom available for every 1000 people. Our goal is to raise $2000 each for our community food bank and Haiti.

This idea started with the real estate brokers and agents in West Seattle, but has grown to include three locations for the car wash and there are many more sponsoring businesses and service groups behind it. Special thanks to Rich Bianchi and Jim Sansburn for making their locations available to wash cars and Bruce Davis of True Value Hardware for donating buckets and car washing mitts, a hose, etc.; plus buying the first 10 tickets! Also, a special thanks to the West Seattle Cheer Team for volunteering to wash cars.

There are three ways to help:

1. Buy lots of tickets or just one.
2. Call the businesses hosting the car wash to volunteer to help wash all those cars.
3. Bring non-perishable food to drop off at any of the three car wash locations.

Westside Baby’s Nancy Woodland to speak at West Seattle Kiwanis meeting

From the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle:

Nancy Woodland, Executive Director of WestSide Baby, will be the guest speaker at the Noon meeting of the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle scheduled for Wednesday, June 9. The luncheon gathering will take place in the dining room of BE’s Restaurant, 4509 California Ave. S.W.

WestSide Baby is a nonprofit organization that collects previously owned items for children and babies and distributes them free of charge to South King County families in need. They work through local social service agencies already assisting low-income families. Agencies order items from WestSide Baby and deliver them to families who are homeless, living in transitional housing or simply in need of a little help during a difficult time.

The goal of the organization is to reach a day when all babies and young children in our community have their basic physical needs met – enough diapers, food, adequate clothing, appropriate toys, books, and safe equipment for their care.

Since opening in 2001, Westside Baby has distributed over $6 million worth of clothing, toys, baby gear, and other items. In 2009, alone they served more than 15,000 children!

The Kiwanis Club of West Seattle, now in its 82nd year, is an affiliate of Kiwanis International, a worldwide organization of men and women dedicated to changing the world one community and one child at a time.

Reservations for the luncheon may be made by calling 06-938-8032. The public is invited.

Fighting graffiti vandalism: The house by The Bridge

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

At the north end of Delridge Way Southwest, one of West Seattle’s four major north-south arterials, sits the house by The Bridge.

Though it looks for all the world as if it should have a Delridge address, it’s officially on 23rd SW. Technicalities aside, it’s seen by thousands of Delridge drivers who stream by every day on their way to one of West Seattle’s two bridges – the Spokane Street Swing Bridge, aka “the low bridge,” or the newly rechristened Jeanette Williams Memorial Bridge, aka “the high bridge.”

The house is not exactly a beloved landmark. By some estimates, it’s sat empty for more than 20 years – it’s had the same owner for 21. It’s got a history of complaints, most recent one a case closed last summer. One year ago, it was the first stop on a “problem properties” tour organized by Mike Dady, then-co-chair of the North Delridge Neighborhood Council – he’s on the left in this photo, with Councilmember Tim Burgess:

Since that tour, both city councilmembers who participated – Sally Clark was the other – have helped pass code changes that give the city new tools to deal with abandoned, trouble-magnet buildings. Two of the houses on the tour have since been demolished. But the house by the bridge carries on. Because of the code changes, its owner could tear it down – but has never pursued a permit to do so.

Now, where it fits into the graffiti-vandalism photo: A few weeks back, it sported big new tags. A neighborhood activist sent us this photo, which we’ve partially blurred because our policy is generally not to show tags in their entirety:

The puffy lettering was explained at a recent crime-awareness meeting as the work of simple vandals, without a gang connotation. Nonetheless, it needed to be painted out, and at that meeting, Delridge Neighborhoods District Coordinator Ron Angeles said he was pretty sure it was scheduled for a paintout shortly – and indeed, within a few days, it was gone.

For now.

And therein lies the rub, and the brush, for the neighbors. It’s hard work to keep this up. Some tools are available – in Angeles’s office at the Neighborhood Service Center, about a mile south of the house, the “red wagon” is there for the borrowing:

It’s a citywide program – detailed here. But it comes with a long list of caveats – Angeles shows us the printouts while we take photos of the wagon and its contents; they’re in the Paint It Out brochure offered by the city.

Tagging is a crime that stirs passions because it has so many victims – those who are forced to look at it, day after day, until and unless it gets painted out. In a WSB discussion of West Seattle graffiti vandalism, Pie” wrote: “I wish someone could explain to taggers that the only people they are impressing are the other moronic taggers. 99% of the people in the neighborhood who see the crap aren’t impressed – we don’t understand the idiotic need to spray an ugly symbol on public or private property to “claim” it. If someone could get that through their heads, that no one but you and your idiot rivals cares, I doubt tagging would be long for the world.”

In the same discussion, Dick” countered: “It’s just paint! Who cares? You shouldn’t associate us graffiti writers with gang members. There’s a very distinct line. They do it to mark their territory. While we do it for the rush, fame, or what have you. Comparing us to real criminals such as drug dealers, murderers, rapists etc is just absurd. You’re really going to get so upset over a millimeter thick layer of paint?! I can’t tell who is the one acting like a child. Us writers, or you guys…”

Without a voice in the discussion, the house by the bridge sits. Today with a big gray patch – from the last paintout – interrupting its faded brick-red exterior; tomorrow? Depends on whether anyone shows up with a spray can tonight.

What is Grad Night at West Seattle High School?
Grad Night is an all night, alcohol and drug free celebration on graduation night that is fun & safe for seniors. The locations, entertainment and activities are mysteries until the seniors arrive at their destinations. The celebration continues until early the next morning.

Why support Grad Night?
Because everyone makes mistakes – even the smartest, most athletic kids. Accidents happen. West Seattle HS has the largest Alumni Association in the United States at 17,000 members. Grad Night is a good segue to that end. We want to keep our kids connected to our community and coming back to give back and keep West Side the Best Side.

As a community member, maybe even one without kids, know that you may have saved a life, or at least given memories to last a lifetime in the community called “home” to these kids.

How much support is needed?
As a public high school, our goal is to raise $50 for every student who attends in order to keep the cost as low as possible. Last year’s Grad Night had approximately 125 attendees. Your donation will help offset the cost of transportation, activities, entertainment, security personnel, food, beverages, prizes and scholarships.

How can I support Grad Night?
Cash, of course is our greatest need. Donations can be sent to: WSHS PTSA – Grad Night, ATTN: David Broadstone, 3000 California Avenue SW, Seattle, WA 98116

We are a 501(3)c. For more information, please contact Carol Viger, cviger@comcast.net, 938-4204
