The annual West Seattle Community Pancake Breakfast will be carrying on a tradition that is looked forward to by a growing number of adults and kids. Folks look forward to this chance to renew long- standing friendships and to make new ones. For the 64th year, the event will be sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle. At the club’s weekly booth at the West Seattle Farmers Market, club members are being asked, “When’s the Pancake Breakfast?”
For the record, it’s always the first Saturday morning of December – this year, it’s December 4. “As usual, we’ll be at the Alki Masonic Building, 4736 40th Ave. S.W. Breakfast will be ready at 7 a.m. and we’re closing at 11 a.m.,” Dr. Steve Leifheit, breakfast chair announced.
Loyal patrons claim, “THE CAKES ARE GREAT!” “They ought to be,” chimed West Niver, president of the West Seattle Kiwanis Club; “we’ve been making them for over 63 years. The recipe is so treasured, Sig Staaksted, who traditionally mixes the batter, keeps the recipe in his billfold”.
Kiwanis is a “hands-on” service organization. “However,” declared Niver, “it still takes some financial resources to support helping young kids, teens and adults who are facing stiff challenges these days. Our time-honored assistance to schools and youth organizations requires funding, as well. “By supporting this event, generous folks help us meet those needs,” Niver concluded.The breakfast will also provide an opportunity for patrons to donate new, unwrapped “Toys for Tots.” Marine reservists will be on hand to accept the toys. Children to 12, accompanied by an adult, will be offered a free photo with Santa.
Adult ticket donations are $5 each ($6 at the door) and kids, to 12, just $3. Mail orders may be sent to PO Box 16128, Seattle, WA 98116. Phone inquiries will be received at 206-938-8032, or stop by the Kiwanis tent at the West Seattle Farmers Market each Sunday.
The West Seattle Kiwanis club is one of the first service clubs established in West Seattle, and was started in 1929. Friends of Sofia Goff along with West Seattle’s own Admiral Theater are putting on this fundraising event. Sofia Zadra Goff, owner of Cafe Revo Ristorante, had to close her doors a week ago. She and her children are in a devastating finacial situation and may lose their home. After numerous medical bills from her husbands sudden illness and death and after putting everything they had on the line to open Cafe Revo, Sofia is now left with numerous amounts of debt and 2 children to take care of as a single parent. She did not earn any money while working 7 days a week at Revo and every penny she could find she put back into Revo to try and keep her staff in jobs and keep the doors open. Recently Sofia got notice her electricity will be shut off at home. Let’s come together as a community to help one of our own who helped numerous West Seattle charities and families while Cafe Revo was open with her generosity.
We hope you can come this Sunday. All proceeds will go directly to Sofia and her children. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for children. Cash and Checks only. Can’t make it? Registration for the 19th Annual Artists Showcase at the Southwest Branch of The Seattle Public Library began Friday, Oct. 1 and continues through Saturday, Oct. 23. Interested artists can either register at the branch, 9010 35th Ave. S.W., or call 206-684-7455 to sign up.
Artists of all ages may enter up to three pieces for display. All artwork formats are accepted.
The Artists Showcase is a non-juried, nonprofit exhibit. The exhibit will be on display at the branch from Sunday, Oct. 24 through Saturday, Nov. 13. A public reception with the artists will be held from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6 at the Southwest Branch.
The reception is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Free parking is available in the branch parking lot. Coffee and dessert will be served.
Artists may bring their work to the Southwest Branch before the showcase Thursday, Oct. 21 through Saturday, Oct. 23 and should pick it up after the showcase Sunday, Nov. 14 through Tuesday, Nov. 16. The Library will create display labels for each piece of artwork. Artists should attach their names and titles of each piece of artwork as they would like the information to appear on the display labels.
Artwork will not be offered for sale at the Library, but artists can provide cards with their names and contact information to be put near their displays. Visitors interested in purchasing artwork will be referred to the artists.

Families facing foreclosure will have the opportunity to meet with their mortgage lenders and get free one-on-one advice and resources from state- certified housing counselors at Mortgage Help Day on October 2.
Last year, over 30,000 families in Washington State lost their homes to foreclosure. With another wave of adjustable rate mortgages resetting and the economy still staggering, it is estimated that nearly 41,000 Washington homeowners are likely to face foreclosure this year.
To support homeowners and communities as well as build awareness around the need for changes in public policy to better stabilize our communities, Statewide Poverty Action Network (Poverty Action) and partner agencies are hosting Mortgage Help Day on October 2, 2010 from 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. at South Seattle Community College.
The free event will connect homeowners with lenders and HUD-certified housing counselors, as well as help attendees understand the foreclosure process and take steps to help remedy the crisis. To date, lenders who will be attending the event include Chase Bank and Wells Fargo. Attendees should bring a photo ID, social security card, last two years of W-2s and tax returns, last two pay stubs and bank statements as well as all mortgage documents (note that pre-registration is required for translation services). “Because lenders, borrowers, homeowners and our communities all benefit if foreclosures are avoided, we are committed to helping vulnerable homeowners gain a broad range of options to maintain their housing,” said Bev Spears, Executive Director of Poverty Action. “Homeowners who are worried about losing their homes or are facing foreclosure should attend our free Mortgage Help Day to gain a deeper understanding about the process, timeline and options to avoid foreclosure.”
In addition to helping Washington homeowners understand and navigate the foreclosure process and possible options, Mortgage Help Day will highlight the overwhelming need for laws to help protect Washington homeowners from foreclosure. Poverty Action is promoting legislation that would create a mandatory mediation process in Washington State to give homeowners every opportunity to avoid foreclosure and maximize the ability for loan modifications. In 23 other states and municipalities around the country, this mediation process has helped 60 percent of participants avoid losing their homes.

Here’s the official announcement for an event that’s happening downtown, but features a major contingent of West Seattle residents, helping out with a great cause:
The Ruby Room, a Seattle nonprofit that provides free formal gowns to teens whose families are struggling financially, will host their fundraiser fashion show, “Fashion Faux Pas to Fashion Fabulous” at the Paramount Theater on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010.
The fashion show features local fashion designers MAC Fashion House and Sabrina Couture, who reconstructed gowns that were donated to the Ruby Room but were unsuitable for the prom. The one-of-a-kind gowns are auctioned off after the fashion show and all proceeds benefit the Ruby Room. Attendees also have the opportunity to bid on items such as travel packages, wine, spa services and restaurant gift certificates.
“If you’re a fashionista on a budget, this is the perfect event for you,” says Nyla Bittermann, director of the Ruby Room and also a West Seattle resident. “Not only do you get to support a local nonprofit and local fashion designers, but you get something for your money. You can walk away with a one-of-a-kind gown.”
MAC Fashion House is the creative vehicle for Carlisia Minnis and Sabrina Hegland is the fashion brain behind Sabrina Couture. Both are established Seattle designers and proud residents of West Seattle.
MovinTM 92.5’s afternoon disc jockey, Mason, will host the fashion show, which features auctioneer Laura Michalek. DJ Skiddle and Richard J. Dalton of C89.5 will provide the music while gowns by MAC Fashion House, Sabrina Couture, House of Alidoro, Meringue by Wiredlemonade, Poirier Couture and Not Your Mama’s Apron walk the runway.

The public is invited to join Providence ElderPlace and Heritage House at the Market for the 9th annual Cooking with Class event and fundraiser, to be held Sept. 14, 2010, at Salty’s on Alki.
The event pairs 22 chefs with 176 guests, with each chef teaching three 30-minute classes. Guests attend three classes each, to make a dish hands-on with the chefs. Each dish is paired with wine donated by Northwest wineries. Through this intimate setting, guests get to know the chefs and learn their tips. The concept has been such a hit that the concept and name have been trademarked.
In addition to cooking, eating and wine tasting, guests will have the opportunity to participate in a raffle of culinary items and a small live auction. John Curley, formerly of Evening Magazine, and Jeremy McLachlan, executive chef at Salty’s on Alki, will act as the auction tag team.
The event benefits Providence Heritage House at the Market and Providence ElderPlace-Seattle, both programs run by Providence Senior and Community Services, a division of Providence Health & Services. Both programs assist frail elderly in King County. For more about these programs, go to www.providence.org/pscs.
Being able to give the most possible money to the programs is the driving force behind this event. The volunteer team procures donations for auction and raffle items and wine. In an unprecedented act of giving, Salty’s on Alki has donated its entire banquet floor for the past eight years and will do so again this year. The restaurant also provides a meal for volunteers and appetizers for guests as they arrive. Local chefs donate their time and product, wineries donate wine to pair with the chefs’ dishes, Pike Brewing Co. donates beer, and many local businesses donate items to help make the event a success.
Each year, many of the same chefs and guests return. The event is fun and casual, unlike many other more formal fundraisers, and no one wants to miss the annual auction of Andaluca chef Wayne Johnson’s wild chef pants!

RIVERSIDE HISTORY WALK FEATURING FRANK ZUVELA and JUDY BENTLEY
Tour Scheduled for Saturday August 28, 2010 – 10am
First generation Riverside resident Frank Zuvela will lead an interpretive walk through local history. Walk the old neighborhood of Riverside on the northwest side of the Duwamish River, below Pigeon Point and over the hill from Delridge. Settlement origins go back to the people of the Duwamish tribe, which were later settled by Croatian immigrants in the early 1900’s. They formed a multi-ethnic neighborhood of European immigrants where Duwamish camps and longhouses had once been. As the Duwamish River was straightened and dredged, the residential community of Riverside co-existed with manufacturing and shipbuilding. The tour is sponsored by the Southwest Seattle Historical Society and one of the most popular walks… an easy pace is set, with frequent stops and tales from Riverside of the past sixty years. Seattle poet and writer Richard Hugo wrote of his fascination with this community of fishermen in The Real West Marginal Way.
