We’ve talked about Hi-Yu, we’ve talked about The Parade, we’ve talked about Summer Fest, and now, another West Seattle summer tradition is getting ready for its closeup: Movies on the Wall next to Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor). This summer, it’ll be outdoor movie night every Saturday, July 19-August 23, with WSB as a co-sponsor; as part of that, we’re teaming up right now with Hotwire proprietor Lora Lewis to gather suggestions for what movies you would like to see shown! You’ll find ballot boxes at Hotwire and other Junction spots, and an online voting option right here on WSB – find it from the Cinema tab across the top of all pages – or just click here. You have till May 15 to get a suggestion in; we’ll post periodic updates on how it’s going and whether we’re seeing any trends!

is there a list with movies shown in the past?

Good question. I have a message out to Lora. Last year I remember “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” and I remember at the end of the summer “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” was supposed to be shown and got rained out twice. We’ve seen a couple other movies in the past few years, with “Wallace and Gromit” coming to mind as well as “Little Shop of Horrors.”

I would love to see classics (pre-1970) there… Casablanca, Sunset Blvd., etc. I’d go every time! (But I doubt too many others would…)

I would love to see “Fantasia” on big screen again – and that music floating on warm summer’s night? Heavenly. Except for the “Night on Bald Mountain” segment – I’m 40 years old and that still makes me want to crawl into my mum’s lap for comfort!

I suggest “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the great 60s movie with Mary Badham as Scout Finch and Gregory Peck in his Oscar-winning role as Atticus Finch.

I think the lazy narration by Kim Stanley is the best ever summer-themed movie opening:
“Maycomb was a tired, old town, even in 1932 when I first knew it. Somehow it was hotter then. Men’s stiff collars wilted by 9:00 in the morning, Ladies bathed before noon, after their 3:00 naps…and by nightfall were like soft tea cakes…with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum.”
