Reader Recommendation Requests for roof stuff … plus pretty pix

Before the next round of bad weather smacks us again, two things: First — Two reader recommendation requests, related to roofs. Second — some nice pix from today. We start with the RRRs:

Trevor writes: “The recent wind storm has jiggled a skylight on our roof and now it’s leaking” and is looking “for a reliable West Seattle handyman who isn’t afraid of heights.”

Michell is dealing with roof leaks and writes, “I am looking for a roofing company in West Seattle. Good work and good prices.”

All recommendations in the comments, please. And now – to balance those gray memories of last week’s stormy weather — three photos taken during the glorious afternoon sunshine:

All photos by WSB contributing photographer Christopher Boffoli; the last one, if you were wondering, features the Seattle Fire Department’s Ladder 11 team, training this afternoon near Jack Block Park.

Try HomeownersClub.org for both a roofer and handyman. You call them and let them know what you need. They have one of their contractors call you and come out for an estimate. If you go ahead, you don’t pay for the job until it’s 100% done, and then you pay Homeowners Club.

We had John Morris roofing put a new roof on our house through them a few years ago, and it’s never had a problem.

A Better Roofing Co. is putting a new roof on our house yesterday and today. I’ll be able to tell you more about the finished product in a few days.
They were extremely easy to work with to get an estimate, choose a roof color, and schedule the work.
The only snafu so far has been preparation for the work. It was supposed to be done last week, but the weather was not cooperating. They called on Monday to let us know that the work would be postponed and they’d call to let us know when it could be rescheduled based on the weather forecast. With no call, they came by sometime on Thursday morning and put the roofing materials up on our roof. Of course, that was also the day of the windstorm. When my wife and I came home from work, we found that the wind had blown some of the materials off the roof. We had new (now extremely deformed and dented) vents scattered about the yard along with the remnants of what used to be the box the vents came in, as well as another smashed box and some of the shingles packing material. Not the brightest idea to drop all that stuff off when everyone knew a windstorm was coming. It just created a bunch of extra work for us to clean everything up.
Work then needed to be rescheduled again so they could reorder the now damaged vents. And it’s underway now. We’ll see how it turns out.

We got a new roof from A Better Roofing a few months ago and we have no complaints. They did a thorough estimate with us and the roof was done quickly and with good cleanup. I was also impressed that they don’t ask for any money up front, only after the job is done. They also came out and did a final inspection to make sure everything was done correctly.

Ace Roofing did our roof about 6 years ago and did a great job. We have had no problems and they had excellent customer service. Their number is (206) 243-2626

The Times has an article with some tips about looking for a roofer

Have to disagree on the recommendation for Home Owners Club. For the first two years of our membership, we had very good luck. The next two were not good at all and we recently cancelled our membership. The quality of work by the companies they referred went down, as did the service from HOC. We had to pester them when we didn’t get the three referrals/bids we were supposed to with membership and after being dissatisfied with more than one job, it was the last straw.

I hope both of those requesters saw the story on the front of the NW Life section in today’s Seattle Times. I didn’t read it, but it was one of their consumer series pieces, and it apparently was full of information on how to select a roofer, as well as which local roofers have the best reputations. Seemed too perfect that it popped up the same day as the request!

A Better Roofing Co. did our repairs to last year’s storm. We only needed one side done… good job and good price.

  • Michell October 25, 2007 (12:05 pm)

Thanks for the suggestions, I am making calls now.

And good tip about the article – quite timely!

I’d like to see some prices here. We were quoted $5,000 from A better Roofers. I thought that was astronomical. I thought a roof for a 1 br house should only be about $2,500.

What did you all pay. come on, anti up with the prices :P

The best advice I can give anyone with homeowner repair issues (which means anyone who owns a home that isn’t brand new): homeownersclub.org
They prescreen the contracters, you pay them and they don’t pay the contractor until you are satisfied. And if there is a problem? You call HOC and they arrange to get t fixed. This has been the answer to our 30+ year old home with roof leaks, settling, needing weatherstripping, new locks, plumbing, heating, etc… They’ve been in business for years. Also check out consumercheckbook.org – they have a list of places with rating and reviews. I wish you the best. M
