wswllicon3.pngThe weekend before Thanksgiving is a great time to give – or to receive, if you are in need – tomorrow morning there’s a turkey/grocery giveaway at Eastridge, and local food banks are gearing up for the holiday – if you are able to give, both the West Seattle Food Bank and White Center Food Bank continue facing high demand, and if you can’t make it during the hours they’re open, look for special benefits, like the Beer Church Turkey Bowl (co-sponsored by WSB) tomorrow night – bring WS Food Bank donations, 6 pm at West Seattle Bowl. One more chance to give – the bloodmobile’s at Mars Hill in West Seattle on Sunday, all welcome – the holidays are a time when the blood supply gets dangerously low. Meantime, other weekend events include the Square 1 Books (WSB sponsor) sale and other business open houses, two puppet shows, Family Science Night, the first big holiday pancake breakfast (presented by the West Seattle Lions); final two performances of “The Diviners” by Twelfth Night Productions (WSB sponsor), native storytelling and hiphop at the Duwamish Longhouse, a free business seminar … More than 50 events/activities in all, brought to you by Skylark Cafe and Club:

FRIDAY NIGHT: Twelfth Night Productions‘ (WSB sponsor) fall production, The Diviners, by Jim Leonard, Jr. at the Youngstown Cultural Center in West Seattle. Set in the fictional town of Zion, Indiana during the Great Depression, The Diviners is an earthy, funny, poignant and profoundly tragic play that speaks to a sense of community during a very dark time in our nation’s history. The Diviners is the story of a disturbed young man named Buddy who holds the ability to divine water in a town where water and faith are in short supply. When a charismatic preacher who has lost his faith comes to town, the two outcasts find a common bond and help each other divine for truth, faith and hope. The townspeople’s demands for the preacher to return to a way of life he no longer believes in drives both men to a crisis of trust. It is a beautiful, haunting play with a stunning climax that resonates long after it’s over. Second-to-last performance, tonight at 7:30 pm. To buy tickets: brownpapertickets.com and at the Youngstown Theater on performance days (4408 Delridge Way SW). Ticket prices: $15 adults/$12 students & seniors

The CD also features up-and-comers you need to know about, like the old-school bluegrass of Armstrong, Lawton & Katz, the deep country old-time of RedDog, Zoe Muth with sweetest twang in Seattle and the indie reggae sounds of Trolls Cottage. True to the spirit of Folklife, this CD Release Party is also a Dance Night! Charmaine Slaven of the Tallboys will call a square dance with RedDog & Squirrel Butter.
