West Seattle snow/ice: Friday morning updates

(TOPLINES: Metro still on snow routing … school closure list here … other changes/closures listed here)

(Latest bridge and Viaduct views; more cams on the WSB Traffic page)
Good morning! The great warmup appears to be under way, with the Boeing Field temp up to 34 degrees at the top of the hour. Morning traffic/weather updates to come, and thanks again for sharing firsthand road reports – whether you’ve traveled it yourself, or can just see it from your home. Almost all schools are closed; no trash/recycling pickups today (if you were missed this week, the city says you can put out double on your regular day next week at no extra charge – but if you are a Friday customer, put it out tomorrow); and there’s one big city request: Clear your storm drain to prevent flooding as this all melts off and new rain arrives.

6:51 AM UPDATE: In comments, Tony provides the first road-condition report: 35th to the West Seattle Bridge to the 4th Avenue exit: “Bare and wet.” Metro buses ARE still on snow routing but warns that could change as conditions improve, so check before you go.

7:13 AM UPDATE: TV report just now from our friends at KING 5 issues a reminder that’ll be valid for much of the day: The melt-off comes with ice/slush sliding off roofs, branches falling off trees, and other new risks to be aware of. We’re starting a “non-school changes/closures” list again today – for one, the West Seattle and Fauntleroy YMCA (WSB sponsor) facilities ARE OPEN – here’s the list; please let us know if you have info to add.

7:25 AM UPDATE: Traffic alert – Jason tweets that a tree is down across one lane of Marine View Drive heading northbound downhill toward Fauntleroy.

7:52 AM UPDATE: From Twitter – a short SOUTHBOUND closure in the Battery Street Tunnel coming up: “SDOT to close southbound lanes of Battery St Tunnel to clear icicles. Will start at 8 AM, end around 8:15. NB lanes not impacted.”

8:19 AM UPDATE: Just went out for that photo looking toward northbound California SW from Thistle. Both are arterials, both plowed to the pavement. The melt-off is quite easy to hear, and see, outside. But the snow underfoot won’t go away immediately, since it included the layer of ice from yesterday morning’s storm.

8:29 AM UPDATE: The Battery Street Tunnel work is done, SDOT says. New problem: Northbound I-5 ramp to the West Seattle Bridge is blocked by a spun-out car.

9:04 AM UPDATE: The I-5 ramp problem is cleared. Speaking of clearing – above, that’s the storm drain near our corner. Some kind soul has already cleared it. The city (as mentioned earlier) is begging everybody to do the same.

10:18 AM UPDATE: The forecast is still suggesting more rain later, and potentially some wind late tonight into tomorrow. (added) P.S. From the WSB Forums, another reading alternative if you’re getting bored with the weather narrative here (we HAVE reported some non-weather stories this week – see the sidebar), read the story of the West Seattleite seen on TV and WSDOT cameras this morning in the I-5 ramp spinout. Meantime, we’re heading out to check on what’s happening around the peninsula.

    • WSB January 20, 2012 (6:48 am)

      thank you!

  • debbie January 20, 2012 (6:57 am)

Highland park hill mostly clear and wet as of right now. Side streets still a mess but 599/99 is also in good shape.

  • sjross January 20, 2012 (6:57 am)

Just drove from home (California & Charlestown) to my “office” for today (Tully’s on Alki). Travel lanes on California, Admiral, & Alki are bare & wet – still a deep layer of slush/ice in the medians. 44th, Charlestown, & 61st are a little “squirrely” but OK if you drive slow (FWD Civic).

  • Valerie January 20, 2012 (6:58 am)

Three of my favorite words! :-)

  • jedifarfy January 20, 2012 (7:00 am)

Sounds like if I can get off of my road, streets are good. Looks like work for me today!

  • WhyStayHome January 20, 2012 (7:09 am)

No delay for the 21 bus at 35th and Holden around 6:45 this morning. Thank you, Metro. 35th Ave, lower bridge, 1st Ave S all wet but bare. Increased slush on Lander between 1st and 4th. 3rd Ave wet but bare.

Hardworking snow plow clearing bus lane at Denny/ Sealth campus.

  • Trileigh January 20, 2012 (7:17 am)

Just got back from a trip to the airport. Roads all fine!

  • snowy January 20, 2012 (7:18 am)

Are people going in late to work or staying home? It looks the same on my street as yesterday. Anyone have any luck with buses this morning? Is it better to work from home today if I can?

    • WSB January 20, 2012 (7:55 am)

Re: buses – Recent report from Twitter, “Lots of 54 and 22 along Calif in Seaview around 7ish. Easy trip to Junction. Water taxi shuttle is scootin along nicely.”

  • Mandy January 20, 2012 (7:19 am)

Unfortunately couldn’t get my FWD car out of it’s parking spot on 44th by the junction (tried for a solid hour). Hopefully this rain will help take away some of the road’s ice layer…

  • W January 20, 2012 (7:24 am)

I’m wondering if the #53 bus will be running today. No recent update on Metro site.

  • Misha B January 20, 2012 (7:28 am)

Went to WSB from Fauntleroy and Juneau just a bit ago, roads are bare and wet at least one lane each direction, the biggest difficulty I had was getting out of my alley!

Though those going to South Seattle/Georgetown, the roads here aren’t quite so nice as the ones West Seattle. Even following a road that is a bus snow route AND goes by the south precinct police station, it was a little dicey in spots, though of course that will get better as the day goes on!

  • xyz January 20, 2012 (7:30 am)

Roxbury & Olson Place are bare and wet with snow mounded in the centerline.

  • montanapup January 20, 2012 (7:36 am)

Large amounts of heavy snow and ice are coming off of rooftops and trees. Be aware and heads up!!

  • redblack January 20, 2012 (7:38 am)

courtesy of the seattle.gov traveler’s page, SDOT/WSDOT says to be on the lookout for this:
    .
    ALASKAN WAY VIADUCT
    .
Expect rolling slowdowns on SR 99, south of the Battery Street Tunnel, to clear drains in anticipation of the melting snow and ice.
    .
    Start: 1/20/12 9:00 AM
    .
    Est. End: 1/20/12 2:00 PM
    .
i imagine at some point the same will be true for the jeanette williams memorial bridge, aka “the high bridge.”

  • rw January 20, 2012 (7:39 am)

I Just dropped my wife off at the water taxi. I saw a number of buses on Admiral and California, including at least one of the long articulated buses. He was heading eastbound on Admiral. Road conditions were as described by sjross.

The hardest part was getting a 1-in. thick layer of ice off my car windows and freeing the windshield wipers.

  • Robert January 20, 2012 (7:42 am)

Got rudely woken up by a loud slab of snow/ice coming off my roof this morning so I 2nd the warning about falling snow.

  • MaryCooks January 20, 2012 (7:53 am)

Good morning! What do my Eastside working neighbors have to say? I’m thinking I need to wait until about 10 to go in. Even though the roads are okay here, they’ve been worse once I got to Kirkland.

  • Bryan January 20, 2012 (7:55 am)

Commute from Admiral to South Lake Union via 99 was a breeze. Side roads are still sloppy but the main roads are an easy drive.

  • Lee January 20, 2012 (8:01 am)

Just drove from N. Admiral to Freemont. Admiral, high bridge and 99 are bare and wet. Side streets are still slick but managable.

  • Sage K. January 20, 2012 (8:06 am)

Delridge Way bare and wet. Side streets still slushy.

If you have the chance make sure and clear out the drains near you so the melting slush can drain.

  • Steph January 20, 2012 (8:06 am)

    Anyone head into Federal Way?

  • HPK January 20, 2012 (8:06 am)

One of our neighbors was kind enough to plow Othello off HPK! We saw him out there last night on one of our many walks to get us out of the house. I wish I knew who he was…and where he got his mini plow! :)

  • Rhonda January 20, 2012 (8:11 am)

Took the 37 in. Beach to 63rd to Alki to Harbor to Lower Bridge to First to Lander to 4th to 3rd & Pike were driveable. The turn from Lander onto 4th had big ruts. Be careful out there.

Waiting at the bus stop it was nice to have the quiet and the sound of the dripping ice.

eta: and if you are driving please remove the snow/ice from your roof because it can fly off and smack the car behind you.

  • HelperMonkey January 20, 2012 (8:18 am)

Marine View Drive has been plowed/sanded, as has Fauntleroy and California. Side streets are still yuck, but there is a blissful drip drip dripping sound everywhere…we’re melting! :)

  • Rebecca January 20, 2012 (8:24 am)

just hopped on the 128 to Southcenter on 16. 16 is pretty clear. Bus was only 10 min late. Looks like Im headed to work.

  • JJA January 20, 2012 (8:24 am)

55 from north admiral was on time and completely normal . . . Except that this enire articulated bus, which is normally standing room only, has a grand total of THREE passengers! Makes for a quick trip when no one is getting on!

  • Christina January 20, 2012 (8:26 am)

Husband just made it up to Everett. Said the freeways are fine, but the side streets are slushy. He’s on his way back, because the meeting he went north for got canceled right after he got there.

  • Keva January 20, 2012 (8:33 am)

Just drove back to WS from the Microsoft campus in Redmond. 520 is decent, heavy slush in some places but not bad. I5 and the bridge were all pretty clear. I’m happy to be back in the Junction. Now if I can get my car out of the foot of slush it’s parked in on California when I go back to work in a few hours. Stay safe!

  • Valerie January 20, 2012 (8:34 am)

Does anyone know how the 120s are running northbound on Delridge? Just wondering if/how much time I should allow for delays or no-bus-coming later this morning.

  • Jiggers January 20, 2012 (8:37 am)

    Mega Meltdown has started.

  • Thugbee January 20, 2012 (8:41 am)

Looking at the very helpful live videos from http://web5.seattle.gov/travelers/ at the 6th Ave and Spokane camera and just watched a car heading the wrong way on Spokane St Viaduct before being turned around by guys with flashing lights and waving arms. Looks back to normal now. Be careful! There are idiots out there (not you reading this, of course)

  • nic January 20, 2012 (8:50 am)

West Seattle to Bothell via high bridge, I-5, 90, and 405 at ~7 AM was pretty smooth sailing – roads were wet but not too slick. Toughest part was getting from the side streets to main arterials.

  • Lolaleah January 20, 2012 (8:57 am)

Crackle crackle crash… Lots of ice falling!

  • sam-c January 20, 2012 (8:59 am)

Valerie- haven’t noticed today, but it seems like the 120s have been running regularly north and south on Delridge throughout the whole week. it seems like they’ve been pretty frequent. one just went by.

  • Jeff January 20, 2012 (9:02 am)

comcast out near the junction for anyone else?

  • vjlawren January 20, 2012 (9:03 am)

    Sam-c, thank you!

  • Sage January 20, 2012 (9:08 am)

20 minutes, 3 scheduled buses, and no sign of a #21 yet at 35th & Webster. Of course, this has also been known to happen when it’s 72 degrees and sunny.

  • goodgraces January 20, 2012 (9:08 am)

Anyone gone up/down Pigeon Point hills?

  • celeste January 20, 2012 (9:22 am)

I am in Arbor Heights on 32nd south of Roxbury. Does anyone in this area know if I can get to the main arterials? (Assuming I can get out of my driveway)

  • sam-c January 20, 2012 (9:36 am)

goodgraces- if you can take 21st to the hill that is south of Youngstown (22nd/ Oregon), that is your best bet. it is clear, plowed and wet. Andover is still pretty slushy. 21st alongside the greenbelt (due west of pathfinder) is slushy but well-traveled and sort of compacted.

  • MB January 20, 2012 (9:44 am)

The city never once went down our street. We’ve been stranded all week. Kenyon st sw in highland park. Very big hill, we’ve yet to get our cars out and its so icy its hard to walk! Our apts have done a miserable job also. The sidewalks and stairs all have a good 4 inches of ice/snow.

  • Snow in highland park January 20, 2012 (10:02 am)

    Bus was half hour late.

  • anonyme January 20, 2012 (10:21 am)

Massive plant damage. Lost a 7 ft. Cryptomeria – looked out the window last night and it was GONE, snapped in half. Lots of other ornamentals severely damaged, including bamboo. Can’t wait for the thaw to see what can be saved.

  • Eddie January 20, 2012 (10:21 am)

Unofficial tally of the most common WSB comments this week:

What’s the status of the route (xx) buses?
What do the roads look like (wherever they are or wherever they have to go)?
The roads are good (wherever they are or went)
How come the weather forecasters are never right?

    • WSB January 20, 2012 (10:42 am)

Thanks, Eddie, and that’s EXACTLY what we would have hoped for. Thanks to everyone who answered, as well as those who asked.
      .
Skookumrose – Sorry to hear about the damage. Our yard was a disaster pre-storm and I think this likely killed the half-dead rockroses but I won’t miss them … I am sorry for anyone who loses beloved plants/trees in this and thinking it will be quite a busy gardening season when spring arrives.

  • Garden_nymph January 20, 2012 (10:25 am)

@Eddie, you forgot opinions about school closures. :)

  • Question January 20, 2012 (10:38 am)

What might be the deeper meaning of wundergrounds weather forecast showing a high of 32 and a low of 36? “Your weather is upside down today”?

  • Moti January 20, 2012 (11:25 am)

any idea if 125 route will be running to SSCC? Icy there?

  • Felicia January 20, 2012 (11:31 am)

To Eddie & Garden Nymph: Commentary on the state of the dairy shelves in the grocery stores in W Seattle was pretty frequent, too!

  • Chivahn January 20, 2012 (11:34 am)

Got out of my driveway (in Fremont) just fine but then promptly got stuck in the slush right out side of it for half an hour until someone helped. BUT aside from that drive over WS bridge was fine (even in my 35 year old tire-chainless RWD corolla). A little slushy at Harbor/Avalon exit, and am worrying about getting OUT of work now since nothing has been done to the parkinglot/entrance/exit of the ActivSpace and the same slush is there that was at my house :/

    Melt faster!

  • Jsv January 20, 2012 (12:35 pm)

Anonyme I’m with you. My bamboo is doubled over still and I’m sure the willow in a pot is dead. Should have brought it in. Sad.

  • Christina January 20, 2012 (1:06 pm)

Just made it to Zippy’s from Shorewood – 26th ave – Roxbury – 14th. The arterials are clear but the side streets are still slushy and slippery. Getting in and out of street parking was pretty tricky too, because of the piles of snow from the plows. That being said, it was worth the risk for their burger of the month, The Bahn Zippy!

  • jedifarfy January 20, 2012 (2:33 pm)

@MB – I live nearby on another street and they NEVER seem to do these streets. We were all mostly stranded yesterday. Today it was melted enough I walk out and a couple of experienced drivers drove. You have a much steeper hill. I havea few friends in that apartment complex and they’ve had trouble too. Good luck!!

  • Sue January 20, 2012 (4:48 pm)

Thanks for the heads-up, Chivahn, about the condition at ActivSpace – I guess I’ll block my schedule out there for a few more days until it clears up via mother nature. Hope you’re able to get home safely and that your clients could get to you!

  • Chivahn January 20, 2012 (6:19 pm)

@Sue the bigger part of lot is right outside my window and I watched cars struggle withit all day. The part of the lot with compact spaces seems better. I may bring some rock salt tomorrow since I am working till Monday night.

Sorry, comment time is over.
