WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: $2 million in 90 seconds: Smash-and-grab robbery at Menashe and Sons Jewelers (updated)

12:18 PM: Police are in The Junction after a robbery reported at Menashe and Sons Jewelers. The robbers are reported to have gotten away in a silver Subaru but that’s already been reported apparently dumped somewhere bear 35th/Fauntleroy, with its occupants possibly getting into a white Camry and heading eastbound on the bridge. The robbers were reported to have been armed with “hammers and bear spray.” More to come.

12:29 PM: We’ve added a photo above sent by Clarence Higuera, who was in the area right after this happened, He also just put us on the phone with a witness who was in the store and says the robbers – masked – smashed their way in and were in and out very quickly. Clarence’s photo shows broken glass in front of the store as well as police. Menashe and Sons has long had a locked door, and other security measures since a crash-and-grab burglary on Christmas Eve 2022.

12:52 PM: We’ve also just received those photos of the damage inside the shop. Police are canvassing nearby businesses for video cameras that might have caught something. If you have any tips or video that might help the investigation, the incident number is 25-233180. The first 911 call came in at noon.

1:14 PM: The Junction Association has long had supplemental security; WSJA tells us the regular hours are in the evening and overnight. Tonight they’ll be “stationed in The Junction at Menashe’s” starting in the early evening and continuing until tomorrow morning. Also of note: WSJA tells us Police Chief Shon Barnes has shown up at the robbery scene. He was already scheduled to be in West Seattle tonight for the city’s Council District 1 version of the Community Safety Forum (6 pm, Delridge Community Center, 4458 Delridge Way SW).

1:47 PM: Another note: The same block saw a daylight smash-and-grab robbery three and a half years ago, in April 2022, at what was at the time Bellevue Rare Coins on the ground floor of what was at the time the Senior Center of West Seattle (the space that now holds Snapdragon). Meantime, we’re not sure if police have recovered the getaway car, as an officer who has seen video just broadcast that it was a silver/blue Subaru Outback with a dealership placard on the back, nothing on the front, some damage near the right rear wheel. That officer also said there were four robbers; the only descriptions broadcast were clothing, including three in gray hoodies, one in a red hoodie.

1:59 PM: CSI detectives have just told dispatch they’re on scene too.

4 PM: Police say the robbers “stole an estimated $1 million dollars’ worth of jewelry” if not more. They also verify that no related vehicle(s) have been recovered yet. Meantime, we have a crew back in The Junction to follow up and they report the shop is installing a temporary door.

4:19 PM: Shop management asked us “to let our customers know that we will be closed until Monday.”

4:46 PM: Anne Higuera spoke with Menashe family members at the shop for WSB. Jack Menashe said, “We’re thankful that no one was hurt … we’ll get through this.” In addition to the police chief coming to the scene, they said they’d also received a call from the mayor.

ADDED 9:43 PM: Here’s the updated summary from police, who say the estimated value of what was taken has doubled:

Seattle police officers are investigating an estimated two million dollar smash and grab robbery of a jewelry store in West Seattle this afternoon.

On Aug. 14, at 12:00 p.m., patrol officers responded to reports of a robbery at a jewelry store in the 4500 block of California Avenue Southwest. There, officers determined that four masked suspects used hammers to smash the locked front glass door. Once inside, they smashed six glass display cases and stole an estimated two million dollars’ worth of jewelry, diamonds, and luxury watches.

According to the police report, “one of the glass jewelry displays contained 700-800k in Rolex watches, another contained an emerald necklace valued at $125k and a platinum diamond. Two other display cases contained a large amount of gold jewelry.”

During the 90-second heist, one of the suspects pointed bear spray and a taser at employees while the others robbed the store. Neither the victims or witnesses reported any injuries to police. When finished, the suspects fled the scene in a getaway car before officers arrived. Police searched the area, yet they did not locate the suspects.

The Robbery Unit, Crime Scene Investigations Unit, and the Photo and Video Units responded to process the scene. Anyone with information is asked to call the SPD Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000. Anonymous tips are accepted.

    Incredibly brazen.
Condolences to all who experienced this horrific incident .

  • Rats August 14, 2025 (1:06 pm)

They have a security door. I wonder how the robbers got in?

    • WSB August 14, 2025 (1:09 pm)

As noted above they are reported to have smashed their way in.

That wonderful family didn’t deserve this !Think of all they have given to West Seattle, esp non- profits fundraisers, etc, etcAnd who hasn’t felt the real Spirit of  Christmas standing in front of their mega decorated home on Beach Drive.

    • MBH August 14, 2025 (1:52 pm)

So agree! Just disgusting for a wonderful business and staple in WS!! Feel so badly for them

      Nancy.  A little privacy?

  • T Rex August 14, 2025 (1:15 pm)

In broad daylight.  My God. I truly cannot believe what Seattle has become. They types of people have no fear of getting caught. And they will get caught. And then released. Rinse and repeat. I hope I am wrong. So sad for this business, such great people and a great family.

    • Menashe August 14, 2025 (4:39 pm)

      Thank you so much!

      • Dawn Branston August 14, 2025 (8:12 pm)

Prayers for peace. So terribly sorry this happened. My heart is broken for you.

    • Debbie Gallagher August 14, 2025 (8:55 pm)

OMG THIS IS SICKENING.  THEY HAVE DONE EVERYTHING TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THE STORE AND ITS EMPLOYEES. I HAVE SHOPPED THERE SEVERAL TIMES OVER MANY YEARS. WONDERFUL FAMILY AND INCREDIBLE JEWERLY.I HAVE NO WORDS FOR THIS TRADGEY.

  • wlcg06 August 14, 2025 (1:17 pm)

I don’t get how the robbers did this either. Middle of the day. They have the big steel barracade pylons (or whatever the security posts are called) in front of the door. How exactly did the robbers smash in?

    • WSB August 14, 2025 (1:54 pm)

Look at the top photo. See the broken glass in front of the front door?

      • Job August 14, 2025 (4:19 pm)

        I admire your patience :)

    • Daniel August 14, 2025 (3:39 pm)

“Smash and grab” (smash the window or glass door while on foot), not “crash and grab” (crash a car into the building to gain entry).  Bollards don’t work against pedestrians.

    • Rob August 15, 2025 (8:42 am)

Those pylons, called bollards, are only bolted to the slab. I’ve wondered many times when walking by the store why they didn’t do a proper, though more costly, job on those. The bollard itself should be embedded a couple of feet down below that slab in concrete. That bolted installation wouldn’t be a match for a car ramming but perhaps it was enough for the scum to go with Plan B.

  • Gini Johnson August 14, 2025 (1:25 pm)

This absolutely makes my heart hurt. The Menashes are my friends. They do so much for our community… from fundraisers at different organizations to the display at Christmas. I hope the robbers are quickly caught and held to the highest extent of a law. We have a good Police department and they are on it.

    • Arch Stanton August 15, 2025 (10:28 pm)

Whether hamstrung by politics or willfully inept, this police department is objectively not good. Never have I seen such blatant criminality every day next to million dollar homes.

  • Marie 47 August 14, 2025 (1:30 pm)

Just got caught in the traffic jam. Good police response. Shocking and heartbreaking.  Went to school with this wonderful family. 62 yr resident.  Need to crack down.  Better leadership, tougher on crime.

  • Joanne August 14, 2025 (1:42 pm)

Infectious rot!  May they get caught and receive proper punishment!

  • HTB August 14, 2025 (1:42 pm)

    The police are failing us

    • ST August 14, 2025 (1:52 pm)

The police are understaffed for a city the size of Seattle. This is well known. While staffing is improving, it’s not there yet. They simply don’t have the numbers to conduct routine patrols all over the city. Instead, they often have to be reactionary like they apparently had to be here. This is too bad for the Menashes and the WS Junction. The Menashes do a great deal for this community.

      • k August 14, 2025 (2:18 pm)

Policing has always been reactionary, even at full staffing (which we’re apparently at or close to now).  Priorities are an issue, as a huge amount of police resources have been dedicated to patrolling areas downtown to remove people sleeping in public and sitting on sidewalks.  This leaves most other areas of the city vulnerable.  A focus on protecting crime instead of improving optics does not require additional staffing and would benefit the community.

        • InTheKnow August 14, 2025 (3:41 pm)

SPD staffing is still under 1000 officers. Full staffing according to city budget documents would be 1400 officers.  About 80 officers are in the academy now, but won’t be released to patrol on their own for at least 12 months.  Don’t believe me? Ask the chief when he is at the meeting in West Seattle tonight. The department is slowly recovering, but it’s still going to be 2-3 years.

        • Job August 14, 2025 (4:23 pm)

sleeping in public and sitting on sidewalks

If you think that’s all they’re doing, look closer.

        • T August 14, 2025 (5:22 pm)

Please experience living in any other big city. Seattle has the lowest police per capita in the country. Visible police presence is a deterrent.

      • Nerd August 14, 2025 (4:32 pm)

The police definitely are reactionary – but in this context the word you’re looking for is reactive!https://grammarist.com/usage/reactionary/

    • Eddie August 14, 2025 (1:53 pm)

Looks like they’re there, doing their jobs.Could it be that parents, social media, and general “give-a-damn” ness has failed us.

    • iD August 14, 2025 (1:53 pm)

It’s not the police.. it’s the policymakers that govern us, and those that voted them in.

    • Rats August 14, 2025 (1:54 pm)

It’s the elected leaders. Thirty years of the same approach. Nothing will change until there’s a mentality shift. Don’t hold your breath though.

      • OKBoomer August 14, 2025 (3:44 pm)

Crime was significantly worse 30 years ago, by every measure.

        • Bill#1 August 15, 2025 (3:20 am)

          Evidence please.

        • Canton August 15, 2025 (7:56 am)

          How so. Please explain…

    • Anne August 14, 2025 (1:58 pm)

What an inane remark. How are the police supposed to stop something like this?

      • Ronald foust August 14, 2025 (10:32 pm)

Thanks Anne…What an inane remark. How are the police supposed to stop something like this?

    • CarDriver August 14, 2025 (2:03 pm)

HTB. So how exactly are they failing us. You seem to believe that there are enough officers so that there can be at least one on every block of the city 24/7/365 to immediately stop crime and apprehend every law breaker. Tell us why you believe that.

    • Rhonda August 14, 2025 (2:09 pm)

HTB, the prior city council and a large percentage of Seattle residents chased several hundred good Seattle police officers away to other local departments. We have several former Seattle police officers here in Bellevue and they’re wonderful.

      • HTB August 14, 2025 (8:08 pm)

Rhonda you sound like a lot of Eastsiders I know — high and mighty and looking down their noses at the rest of us. How about you try living in this community before you tell everyone how great Bellevue is.

        • Rhonda August 14, 2025 (10:45 pm)

“Eastsider”, HTB? I live in Arbor Heights and have lived exclusively in West Seattle (except on deployment) for 35 years. I simply work in Bellevue.

      • Build Baby Build August 14, 2025 (9:26 pm)

@rhonda: do you live in Bellevue?

    • Insertname August 14, 2025 (2:15 pm)

No, it’s the politicians, prosecutors, and judges that are failing us. These days there are almost zero repercussions for these types of crimes. Any crime for that matter it seems. And the criminals know that.

      • KJ August 14, 2025 (4:41 pm)

Exactly. When the fear of punishment is not a deterrent (because there is no punishment) the crime will continue and only worsen. I’m so sorry this happened and sadly I’m not surprised.

    • WS98 August 14, 2025 (2:18 pm)

So sorry Menashe and other stores have been victims of these awful crimes, truly hope everyone is okay.   You can’t simply blame the ‘system’ for smash and grabs. They’re executed by organized criminals and it happens so fast that police would literally need to be on every retail block to prevent them. There wouldn’t be enough police to prevent them, even if SPD were 100% staffed.

    • VapoCOOL August 14, 2025 (2:31 pm)

Can’t blame SPD, it’s the Seattle City Consul that is the problem.

    • wscommuter August 14, 2025 (2:43 pm)

Please do explain how “the police are failing us.”  We’re all waiting for your brilliance.

    • Seattlite August 14, 2025 (2:57 pm)

HTB:  SPD is not failing WS.  In fact, SPD is doing a great job considering they have been understaffed in recent years and still are not up to a full staff of police officers.  However, look up to the top of the chain for who is failing WS…City Council and Mayor.  Policies matter.

    • Alki resident August 14, 2025 (3:34 pm)

Please don’t ever call them. I’d hate to see failure show up at your door.

    • Kt August 14, 2025 (5:17 pm)

The police are not paid by the taxpayers to stand guard at private businesses to prevent intruders so n9t sure what your comment is getting at.

    • waughtown August 14, 2025 (6:29 pm)

I’m a huge supporter of law enforcement, however, there was a naked woman this morning on 42nd SW at Genesee.  She was obviously having some kind of crisis——and across the street from a school with kids coming in for a summer camp.  I and several other people called 911 and were begging for help.  NOT ONE POLICE OFFICER SHOWED UP FOR OVER AN HOUR!!!  I finally gave up and left.  I heard that once they did turn up, she was gone.  The city of Seattle should be embarrassed.  Pathetic!!!  Why are our property taxes so high when we can’t even expect the most basic public safety?

      • WSB August 14, 2025 (10:21 pm)

Someone texted us about that and we heard the dispatch. She had gone into a nearby apartment building where she apparently lives,; they found her and called an embulance for an involuntary treatment trip to Harborview. – TR

        • Citizen August 14, 2025 (11:30 pm)

What a terrible and cold response. Seriously, there is no excuse that justifies the lack of response. Practically every adult who was home at the time was calling in about this person in crisis. This woman was absolutely trying to harm herself during her mental health crisis as well as potentially harm others who were trying to help as she was throwing herself into traffic repeatedly and chasing cars, while naked in full view of children. What happened to the jewelry store is tragic and this does not take away from that. What is frustrating is the lack of response to another immediate threat right down the street. It was abysmal. To not even show up to the apartment building while we was clearly in crisis for hours, up until she was taken by ambulance around 4:30PM, is a huge disregard for safety. Everybody who was outside trying to keep the kids out of view and keep themselves and their homes safe for over an hour this morning felt dismissed by SPD and dispatch.

          • WSB August 14, 2025 (11:59 pm)

It didn’t seem like the commenter knew how the situation had ended, so I was offering that information, since that’s what we do. One person texted us about it and we were able to tell them the same thing, shortly after hearing a dispatch for it — TR

      • Local August 15, 2025 (8:41 am)

She was back again? Makes sense she would live nearby. She was seen and found in that school’s guest home maybe a month ago. They must have gotten her home that day knowing that a repeat offense would send her in for treatment.

  • Walkabout August 14, 2025 (1:59 pm)

The police are NOT failing us! Although some are quick to claim that violent crimes are down, more and more brazen acts are taking place in broad daylight. Our elected leaders and judges have failed us and our local businesses too.

  • Dan August 14, 2025 (2:00 pm)

I’m saddened to hear this news

    • Ferns August 14, 2025 (10:29 pm)

Same. I feel sad about this and remember the last time it happened. Why can’t we have nice things and safe local businesses?

  • Eric1 August 14, 2025 (2:03 pm)

When can we vote the criminals off the island?

    • helpermonkey August 14, 2025 (3:18 pm)

maybe when we vote out the one in the white house.

      • Jim August 14, 2025 (9:25 pm)

What does the White House have to do with local crime?!

    • Dp August 15, 2025 (12:18 am)

What island?? This isn’t a fricking island

  • Joan August 14, 2025 (2:06 pm)

So sorry to hear this! Maybe it’s time for a secure door with no glass! And steel gate that comes down when the store is closed.

    • Bill#1 August 15, 2025 (3:31 am)

      Store wasn’t closed!

  • J August 14, 2025 (2:17 pm)

This hurts. These people need to be caught. Keep on  the lookout :(

  • Tim August 14, 2025 (2:31 pm)

So sorry to the Menashe family and employees today. Take care, we hope you are all well.As to the police, no amount of officers hired will prevent 4 determined individuals from causing chaos. Nor will increased penalties. Policy changes, decisions about bail, longer sentences will not have a huge effect when people believe they can get easy money, and feel they deserve it more than the owners. There is no easy fix. Just hard work ahead.

    • Mary August 14, 2025 (6:46 pm)

Thank you for being a rational voice here. I also feel bad for the family and employees and am glad no one was physically hurt. I also admire the calm perspective of the Menashe representative who briefly commented. They are pillars of West Seattle.

  • Chelle August 14, 2025 (2:31 pm)

What a horrible thing to do. The Menashe family and the store are so wonderful. I hope they catch these terrible criminals. Praying for the employees.

  • DRW August 14, 2025 (2:32 pm)

West Seattle is a prime location for burglaries due to the ease of escape routes. If you hit the bridge eastbound you could go almost anywhere in a hurry. Same with bailing out to Marginal South or to 509.

    • Eddie August 14, 2025 (2:49 pm)

Pretty ironic to think about it being easy to escape, after living thru the viaduct, the bridge, and about every morning’s hellish traffic.

      • Bill#1 August 15, 2025 (3:48 am)

We need our draw bridges back!

    • Eddie August 14, 2025 (3:09 pm)

Let’s blame “easy and available” parking too.

      • john August 14, 2025 (5:46 pm)

They probably switched on the emergency flashers and double parked (now so common it wouldn’t raise an eye).

  • Keenan August 14, 2025 (2:33 pm)

Police should be patrolling the Junction every day. I grew up in a garbage Midwestern town with a microscopic budget.  Police patrolled the main streets all day, every day. I’ve lived in West Seattle more than a decade and only ever see cops siting in their cars or pulling over drivers. Get out there and police the streets! Where people are! What are we paying these people to do, actually?

    • Bill#1 August 15, 2025 (3:51 am)

You have to have them on hand in order to “pay them”! Back in the ’50’s and probably most of the 60’s there was a beat cop in the junction every day of the week! They were regular SPD – not any kind of “rent-a-cop” or off duty or retired guy picking up a side job

  • Dog Whisperer August 14, 2025 (2:36 pm)

And our fair city wants to elect a soft on crime socialist for mayor and replace the only law abiding city attorney we’ve seen in fifteen years.

    • walkerws August 14, 2025 (2:53 pm)

I assume you’re talking about Katie Wilson, who hasn’t espoused any “soft on crime” positions and isn’t a socialist (while socialism is awesome, she isn’t one).

    • Pass the buck August 14, 2025 (3:10 pm)

Wait… so who is in those offices now and how have they made things better? Amazing that folks on a mere ballot with no actual power are the ones to blame for things.

    • Phil August 14, 2025 (4:06 pm)

      nice fear mongering.

    • Francis August 14, 2025 (6:07 pm)

Jeezus Christ. You wouldn’t know a Socialist if one walked up and kicked you in the butt!

  • Frank August 14, 2025 (2:51 pm)

Remember this when it comes to voting time in the fall. The incumbents are being challenged by soft on crime candidates hiding behind a smoke screen that the police union contract was “poorly negotiated” and that the city needs to “better understand” gun violence.

    • Phil August 14, 2025 (4:12 pm)

      nice fear mongering.

    • k August 14, 2025 (9:53 pm)

Yeah, I’m not voting for the guy who pulled a gun on a pregnant woman in a dispute over a parking spot.  Not sure how people keep coming back to the conclusion that voting for criminals is the way to reduce crime (see also: the White House), but I’m gonna go ahead and use common sense to vote for the person who has NOT committed crimes, as a first step toward not enabling crime.

    • Delridge420 August 14, 2025 (11:13 pm)

So I should remember this and vote for Harrell and Nelson when this happened under their leadership?

  • Suge August 14, 2025 (2:56 pm)

The guy that used to have the Jewley store on Oregon where the pastry shop is now had a few attempted robberies with much different outcomes in the past.My thoughts are with all the wonderful people that work at Menashe’s. They shouldn’t have to deal with this, and it must have been terrifying.

  • Seattlite August 14, 2025 (3:05 pm)

For the record, Jack Menashe is a stand-up guy.  The entire Menashe family are great.  Hopefully, the robbers will be caught, arrested, charged, and off the streets for a long time.  WA DC has finally gotten their crime and criminals under control.  Can Seattle and WA State follow suit?   I know that soft on crime  judges are a major problem but that can be fixed by voting for hard on crime judges.  Just my opinion.

    • Menashe August 14, 2025 (4:42 pm)

      Thank you so much

    • Bill#1 August 15, 2025 (4:02 am)

“…but that can be fixed by voting for hard on crime judges. “
From my observations – for over 50 years of voting in Seattle/King County — whenever the judge elections come up – there can be 6-12 or even more positions — on the ballot — only 1 or 2 at the most are ever opposed – i.e. any actual choice!

    • No Fascism Please August 15, 2025 (6:15 am)

DC has the lowest crime rate in 30 years if you don’t count the current administration.

  • EJ August 14, 2025 (3:05 pm)

We need better recruiting for SPD’s vacancies, more surveillance, and harsher penalties for criminals. We’ve tried this lovey-dovey experiment with “defunding the police” (which consequently led officers to lateral to jurisdictions that were more welcoming of law enforcement) and incarceration alternatives, and it failed miserably. Criminals know they either won’t be caught, or will face minimal consequences if caught. Look no further than the drive-by shooting suspect on Alki who was PR’d by a King County judge. The system isn’t working and it’s time for the city (and King County judges) to stop favoring criminals over law-abiding citizens.

    • Lauren August 14, 2025 (3:29 pm)

Once more for the people in the back: SPD was never defunded.

      • EJ August 14, 2025 (4:36 pm)

I didn’t say they were defunded. I said that all the calls in 2020-2021 to defund the police led perfectly good officers to lateral to other jurisdictions that weren’t raging against the police. Do you not remember CHOP?

      • Mike August 14, 2025 (4:58 pm)

Lauren:  you can deny it repeatedly and loudly, but facts are facts. The police were demoralized, vilified, and disempowered by the previous SCC, and many officers left for places where their service is appreciated. Those are the facts.  Media misrepresentation and deception such as yours made folks so upset that in 2024 they elected a horrible individual (IMO), largely because they were tired of being lied to.  Speak truth.

        • Lauren August 15, 2025 (7:34 am)

There is zero deception. They lost ZERO funds. And if police officers can’t handle criticism (in a role that SHOULD be highly monitored and held accountable), then they should find jobs better suited for their delicate egos.

So sad to hear this happened to this wonderful family who has been an integral part of the West Seattle Community for years.

    • Menashe August 14, 2025 (4:41 pm)

      Thank you so much

    • Bambi August 14, 2025 (7:05 pm)

This is heartbreaking and sickening news and I am so sorry this horrifying crime happened to the Menashe family and any customers present at the time of the robbery.  It is a wonder anybody wants to open a business here in West Seattle anymore.  The Menashe store has been an anchor in our Junction area for years and the family had already taken security measures beyond what should ever be necessary.  These criminals are morally bankrupt and my highest hope is that they are caught and jailed.  Menashe Family please know that our community is shocked…you don’t deserve this and we are hoping for the best possible outcome.  Thank you for all you have done for West Seattle in the past; generous in so many ways…I feel shame for our humanity almost daily sinking to new lows.

  • Tired of the crime in Seattle August 14, 2025 (3:57 pm)

WS resident for 30 years and have never seen the level of crimes we are experiencing. These are gangs that are committing these crimes and causing chaos. I don’t know why SPD is afraid to mention that to the public. We really need police presence to deter these crimes….along with tough consequences. They come to WA because they know we are soft on punishment. Can’t enjoy the city I pay ridiculous taxes to live in.

    • Lauren August 14, 2025 (5:06 pm)

This is 1000% not true and needless fear mongering. Signed, someone who’s lived here 40 years (since apparently that matters)

      • J. Sexton August 15, 2025 (10:03 am)

I do not support the sweeping and reductionary statements of this comment, but there are and have been several gangs in West Seattle for many, many years. No evidence that these burglers were involved in gangs, though…I’d guess gangs would have had guns, not bear spray. 🫤

    • StupidInSeattle August 14, 2025 (8:54 pm)

Same thoughts.  My wife and I had lived in West Seattle since 1989, but just moved to Arizona as it became obvious that the city elected officials would do nothing to stop widespread, out of control property crime, armed robberies, violent assaults, out in the open drug dealing and usage.  Seattle used to be such a great city, but I just became afraid to go out into it.

      • Delridge420 August 14, 2025 (11:31 pm)

You moved out of the city to play golf.

        • StupidinSeattle August 16, 2025 (6:54 pm)

I now live in a law & order community, not a smash & grab community.

          • Delridge420 August 19, 2025 (2:47 am)

*a law and order community where your shoes will melt in the afternoon sun

    • 1994 August 14, 2025 (9:09 pm)

” Can’t enjoy the city I pay ridiculous taxes to live in. ” I agree with that statement! They keep saying crime is down but I wonder about that messaging because around here crime seems about the same or slightly worse. One thing we hear less about is the cat converter thefts but lots of other crimes happening right and left. So sorry for the Menashe family and wishing for a quick pick up and carry on!

  • Al King August 14, 2025 (4:16 pm)

Are any of the stolen items identifiable?  Guessing these stolen goods will show up for sale on the internet?

    • Alki resident August 14, 2025 (7:09 pm)

If they show up on the internet it won’t be in this state.,

    • Christopher B. August 14, 2025 (7:34 pm)

Al: I’d guess that this crew is a bit more “high-line” than that. I don’t think that amateurs would be so bold as to go in strong through the font door in broad daylight. So I doubt this stuff is going to appear on Offer Up anytime soon. But you bring up a good point. It’s not a $1 million haul until the goods are fenced somewhere. So here’s hoping these thieves screw up and do something foolish during the next stage of this theft.

    • Truth August 14, 2025 (10:03 pm)

Unfortunately, they will melt that stuff down and break down gems.  My house got burglarized as a kid. One local jeweler recognized a unique gem that my mom had. The guy got arrested, but described how they melted down all of the gold and silver, and sold it off for undervalue. They also separated the diamonds and sold it off on a shady market too.

      • Christopher B August 15, 2025 (7:36 am)

Maybe. But they also took expensive watches (with serial numbers) that won’t be melted down.

      • brandon August 15, 2025 (8:20 am)

um yeah no…they aren’t going to melt down a 700k rolex

  • James S August 14, 2025 (4:17 pm)

It seems the blame for continuous crime including brazen daytime crime such as this one falls mostly on judges who are using their discretion to be soft on criminals. SPD is still short staffed but even if fully staffed they wouldn’t be able to prevent all crime. Police put in the hard work to find criminals, make arrests, prosecutors prosecute the criminals or attempt to but it’s the judges in KC who seem to refuse to hold even the worst criminals accountable. Not sure why this is? I’m sure they would feel differently if they were the victims of this criminal conduct. It must be extremely frustrating for SPD officers to have to continuously arrest repeat offenders due to judges giving them 2nd, 3rd n 4th chances to be out on the street committing more crime. It’s time we have judges run for office who want to hold criminals account  & that means hard jail time!  That’s why crime is often much lower in cities where they arrest, prosecute & actually put criminals in jail even for lower level crimes when the law allows. I believe there must also be uptick in gangs in Seattle post pandemic as well as a previous comment stated.

  • Pat August 14, 2025 (4:19 pm)

Jack, Josh, Kim, Bruce and all, so, so sorry to hear that some low lives have attacked your store again.  You deserve better treatment than that!!  Take heart knowing that the community cares deeply for you.

  • Question Authority August 14, 2025 (4:21 pm)

Being that smash n grabs have plagued retailers, museums and curiosities world wide I’m surprised they hadn’t armored up the display cases and door with layered safety glass.  That cost would be miniscule compared to this loss, I’ve done business there and they don’t deserve this but WS  isn’t Mayberry anymore.

  • longtimecustomer August 14, 2025 (4:30 pm)

I’m just so sorry for the Menashe family and any of the workers and customers that were there during the time of the robbery. This family owned jewelry store is a rarity and they are incredibly trustworthy and pleasant to do business with. I feel so bad that any level of their trust was broken by criminals and look forward to their reopening.

  • WSCurmudgeon August 14, 2025 (4:45 pm)

I bought my house near AK Jct in the mid-80s. It was built in 1908.  When rewiring, we discovered a low voltage system connected to all the windows on the ground floor.  Later found out the first owner was an electrician.  It turned out he installed a burglar alarm when he built the house.  The idea that West Seattle was ever a low crime paradise is inaccurate.

    • Alki resident August 14, 2025 (7:08 pm)

Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, we never locked our doors. House or car. We never heard of any burglary in West Seattle but if someone had an alarm dating that far back, it could’ve been because they had possessions they didn’t want stolen but not necessarily because there was previous theft in the area.

    • Bill#1 August 14, 2025 (7:49 pm)

You obviously Did not live here in the 1950’s – 1980’s — and for that matter how’s that crime rate increasing rate from ’80’s to the present?  Open your eyes!

    • John August 14, 2025 (9:27 pm)

Very bad take! Just because someone had locks on their doors and burglar alarms doesn’t mean that crime has always been bad

  • Delridge Neighbor August 14, 2025 (4:56 pm)

My best wishes for the Menashes. This crime was so quick and lucrative that it sounds like a group of professional criminals, the kind that fly in from another state. I wonder if the FBI is tracking this types of robberies. I suspect the same crew could be doing the same style robbery anywhere across the country. It’s scary when it happens in our neighborhood to people who contribute so much to the community.

    • Greg August 14, 2025 (5:48 pm)

this type of crime is common on social media. sometimes it’s even crowd sourced

      • Delridge Neighbor August 15, 2025 (5:32 am)

Could you elaborate on what you mean by crowd sourced crime?  Are people recruiting their fellow criminals through social media or boasting about what they’ve stolen? After I watched a friend play the video game grand theft auto, I wondered if it wasn’t a tutorial for robbing people. I’m curious to know more about how social media and gaming are influencing crime.

  • Mike August 14, 2025 (5:13 pm)

This is sad, the Menashe’s are neighbors of ours and they’re great people. Scratching my head how to respond to this. It’s not reasonable to think that the police could’ve stopped something so bold and so rapid unless officers happened to be nearby. A shotgun behind the counter would’ve stopped it, but I don’t know whether that sort of self defense is viable in Seattle: In most areas of the country an aggressive smashing-in by masked criminals with bear spray would be sufficient to establish reasonable fear of serious, bodily harm and support a firearm defense.  I think in Seattle with our judicial system, the store owner might  just be prosecuted unless they actually allowed the criminals to harm them. I would love it if a criminal defense attorney would be willing to weigh in here.

    • WSB August 14, 2025 (10:01 pm)

Information we didn’t have previously has just been released by police and I’ve added above.
*90 seconds* is how long they say the robbery lasted.

  • WS bridge needs to become gated August 14, 2025 (5:14 pm)

Or more surveillance installed at the entry points. People come here to commit crimes (Kia boys, 7 eleven/smoke shop stolen vehicle robberies) and harass residents on Alki. The choke points need to have several speed bump deterrents and license plate reading cameras at the ramps.

      1. This is sad for Menashe. Hope they can recover financially and mentally. All of us are continually affected by people flocking here to terrorize us.
    1. KT August 14, 2025 (5:28 pm)

I would love to see the percentage of burglaries, unarmed and armed robberies, smash & grabs … that are actually solved by SPD.  I would also like to see the number of stolen cars recovered by SPD while occupied.

      • brandon August 15, 2025 (8:21 am)

        look it up then

        • Daniel August 15, 2025 (3:03 pm)

I don’t know if you can look this up.  SPD doesn’t publish obvious clearance data for robbery, burglary, etc.  There’s some couple years old numbers on homicide clearance rate, but it’s pretty low (25%).  I suspect it is lower than that for burglary, robbery, etc.

    2. Russell August 14, 2025 (5:34 pm)

I saw this happen and I called 911. I was driving through the junction and saw a grey Subaru parked in front of Menashe with its flashers on. I saw three men get out with masks and go up to the door/window and smash it in. it was incredibly brazen and dangerous as there were people all over the junction as normal at noon on a weekday. I pulled over in front of Shadowland and called 911 and gave a eport of what was happening. Within a few minutes, the men were back in the car and the Subaru was speeding and swerving up California Avenue. I’m so glad no one was hurt. I sincerely hope these people are caught because they are clearly emboldened to do serious harm in the middle of the day in a busy neighborhood.

    3. guitarguy August 14, 2025 (6:00 pm)

We are praying for you, Menashe’s!  You all are a blessing to this community and I am  heartbroken for this terror you had to endure.

    4. E. Alhadeff August 14, 2025 (6:07 pm)

This just makes me so sick. I am so sorry this has happened to this wonderful, community oriented family. Unbelievable what’s happened to our society and that people can be so brazen and cruel. Hoping your family moves through this quickly and smoothly and that you are back in business soon.

    5. Danielle S August 14, 2025 (6:09 pm)

How incredibly scary for those who were working and shopping there. The Menashe family is part of the heartbeat of West Seattle. I hope this terrible day won’t make them question whether to continue building their legacy here. The whole community is broken-hearted tonight. 😔

    6. Jim August 14, 2025 (6:31 pm)

We elected the politicians who allowed the quality of life in WA to deteriorate = nothing will change until voters wake up.

Sorry that people like the Manashe Family have to live with/deal with the results

    7. Bdubbs7 August 14, 2025 (7:05 pm)

Sooooo tired of this shhhhhhh…….tired of watching it happen. Tired of carrying pepper spray. Tired of telling my husband to be aware in case his place of business is robbed. Now it’s happening in broad daylight! We HAVE TO START VOTING DIFFERENTLY IN THIS CITY! I’m not saying vote Republican, but dang it STOP with this soft on crime ultra liberal crap. And I’m saying this as a liberal! End rant.

    8. Gilbert August 14, 2025 (7:10 pm)

Glad everyone is safe. Sad this is the reality of our business. We walked this process two decades back. Merchandise is replaceable life is not. Be safe and well my friends. Gilbert aka WJCE.

    9. NotSoFast August 14, 2025 (7:12 pm)

First thing my wife asked me was “where was their security?” It’s absolutely disgusting this happened. I’m hoping they recover and hire an armed security guard if they don’t have one already.

    10. 22blades August 14, 2025 (7:51 pm)

It’s unfortunate but as one who got held up at gunpoint at an ATM in broad daylight decades ago on Pike & 4th, nothing surprises me. Just remember, something like Trump University inflicts more economic damage than these punks. They just don’t wear a tie.

    11. Cecile DePanfilis August 14, 2025 (7:59 pm)

I am so sorry this despicable event occurred to such a wonderful family and grateful that everyone is physically ok . It can definitely be emotionally devastating however. My prayers that all heal & that the culprits be caught & punished .

    12. WSRes August 14, 2025 (8:27 pm)

Things have been getting steadily worse, but this one cuts deep. We have only shopped with Jack for our wedding set and anniversary sets. Going back over 20yrs. The Menashe family is a WS fixture. This makes me so sad for them and our community. Soft on crime is really working out……

    13. Customer without thousands to spend August 14, 2025 (8:30 pm)

I am so sorry to hear about this. I always appreciate being able to go to Menashe even though my budget isn’t huge. I was treated like a good neighbor by Josh and his team and felt like they always wanted to do right by me. (And they did). I really hope they catch the jerks who did this to them. They do a ton for our neighborhood in addition to the best Christmas display in Seattle.

    14. WSfan August 14, 2025 (8:31 pm)

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear this news. I used to work in the Junction, have been a customer, and know several of the employees. I’m so glad no one was physically harmed. I wish them all the best as they recover from this traumatic experience.

    15. Just asking August 14, 2025 (8:51 pm)

Did the business have an insurance policy that documented each of the items to total $1 million?  Will authorities monitor owner bank accounts for unusual activities over the next few years?  Did the business have security officers guarding the doors and cameras (like Safeway, for example)?  Was today’s surveillance anny different?  Are there timesheet records of in-office staff going back at least one year?  Was today’s staffing level any different?  Just a few questions to understand the situation…

      • WS Person August 14, 2025 (11:18 pm)

Be real. You’re not “just asking a few questions to understand” you’re insinuating and propagandizing that they set up a robbery for an insurance claim. Just go back in your hole troll.

        • Bill#1 August 15, 2025 (4:21 am)

Very good and probably accurate take!

      • Elizagrace August 14, 2025 (11:37 pm)

Really? A longtime small business with a track record of supporting this community was brazenly robbed today and you are suggesting it was an inside job. . To answer some of the questions, yes there is security in person and cameras and yes items are logged and appraised and insured, I highly doubt any impactful changes to security measures took place today given the recent damage caused a few years ago, not only that but I echo what others who know this family have said-I have known this family for decades both as a former employee and continued friend and have only seen them act with care and respect, they regularly go out of their way to support local sports teams and non profits. I hope you remember the things you are saying will hurt the family and employees when they read it and I wish you would take it back. I hope you have a s—ty night sleep plagued with dreams of people shouting baseless claims at you.

    16. Question Authority August 14, 2025 (9:47 pm)

Soooo asking for a friend…. if you don’t threaten anyone with the hammer and simply point the Bear Spray and Taser without use is it considered armed robbery?  If there was an armed employee or visitor could they have dealt with them legally?  This seems like a theft and not armed robbery.

      • WSB August 14, 2025 (10:29 pm)

Yes, if a weapon is shown, it’s armed robbery. The visibility of it alone is considered a threat,

        • Question Authority August 15, 2025 (9:59 am)

Does that threat of bodily harm in a public setting justify using deadly force by a guard, or armed civilians against someone with a hammer, Tazer or Bear Spray as I would hope so.

      • Rhonda August 15, 2025 (12:31 am)

A hammer is a deadly weapon and bear spray can kill a human, so it was absolutely an armed robbery.

    17. Michelle August 14, 2025 (10:18 pm)

Oh my gosh this is awful! The crew at Menashe has always been so kind and helpful. I LOVE having a neighborhood jeweler and so this is so sad to hear! I hope they can recover in a timely way and find a set up that feels safe for them and still serves our community.

    18. B August 14, 2025 (11:12 pm)

I believe they have an armed guard. I wonder if the burglars cased the place and saw the guard leave for lunch at same time every day and struck then. They got it done in 90 seconds. Sorry to the family, totally devastating.

      • Christopher B August 15, 2025 (9:09 am)

They MUST have cased the place in advance. Hopefully they have archived surveillance video of these guys during their previous visit(s).

    19. Barbara Vranas August 14, 2025 (11:16 pm)

I am so sorry Mr. Menashe.

    20. Steve August 15, 2025 (3:57 am)

Who would have thought that glass couldn’t protect 2 million in merchandise? Insurance will not pay for that. They will say there should have been better safety measures in place. The Menashe’s have done a lot for this community. Horrible that this happened.

    21. Lisa August 15, 2025 (7:14 am)

This is heartbreaking.  I have been to Manashe & Sons so many times to dream, haven’t ever bought anything and they always treated like a valued customer.   And I’ll always remember the night when Mr. Menashe had just showed up on Christmas Eve while at their holiday light display and it was magical!   Pure gentleman.   I’m sorry for your violation and the new stresses in each persons life who were present.   Xo

    22. RL August 15, 2025 (9:09 am)

      Any video?

    23. Wes C. Addle August 15, 2025 (9:29 am)

Blame Socialists!Blame SPD!Blame Trump!Blame Judges!Blame SCC!Blame Social Media! If you arrest criminals such as this, which obviously which should not be the catch and release variety, you need a place to put them.  Weird to see no one mention this.   There’s Zero available jail space.  Cops left Seattle for places that were cheaper and less “by the book” that’s not a loss for the city, you’ll get new employees, just like any other large business.  Like many have said, more cops isn’t a real solution.   We need better processes so when a criminal is caught, the appropriate and deemed consequences are followed through on.

    24. Connie Bigelow August 15, 2025 (9:48 am)

      So damn sad.

    25. Brenda August 15, 2025 (9:50 am)

I am very sad for the Menashe family.  They are part of the fabric of the WS Community.  I hope they are able to recover from this incident and our neighborhood can continue to support their business.

    26. LPM August 15, 2025 (9:59 am)

A woman in crisis running naked, Smash and grab at the jewelry store and a shooting on Alki.  Happy Thursday everyone.

    27. Carol Anderson August 15, 2025 (12:45 pm)

What a difficult event for all the employees and the very kind and caring Menasche’s.   I hope you all recover quickly from the shock.  I love the store not only for the fabulous inventory, but for the quality experience of shopping there. Everyone is so kind and knowledgeable.  My best to you all

    28. Dr Wu August 15, 2025 (7:35 pm)

A reminder that you are your own first responder. When seconds count, the SPD will eventually arrive.

    29. A Suggestion August 15, 2025 (11:29 pm)

In many of these cases the suspects are younger.  A suggestion I would make to business owners is to invest in  a high quality camera security system that provides several angles.  As a Seattle Public School Employee, it’s natural to be able to recognize faces, clothing and mannerism of current and past students.  Along with good footage and staff that are willing to come forward, staff could be a good resource identifying  suspects.  And yes,  it’s not unusual for  some of these youngsters to attend school on the regular and yes it’s it would be disturbing to have to turn in a student, but it’s the right thing to do.

    30. Chin Up August 16, 2025 (4:19 pm)

I am so sorry for the Menashe family. It’s so wonderful to have this amazing, family-owned, small jewelry business right here in our community. We have purchased items from them over the years and will absolutely continue to do so in the future. I hope the Menashes aren’t too discouraged. Your WS family is here for you!
