BIZNOTE: Taste of Mumbai reopens with new ownership

After a month-plus closure initially attributed – via note on the door – to a staffing shortage, Taste of Mumbai has reopened in The Admiral District, under new ownership and management. We got a call today from the restaurant’s new manager, who told us, “Nobody from before is working here now.” Their new hours are 11 am to 11 pm daily, including an 11 am-3 pm lunch buffet (10+ dishes, $22.99). No bar yet but they’re hoping to get their liquor license within a month. They’re keeping the name and improving their online presence. For new owner Vikram Singh, we’re told, this is the first restaurant venture. Under previous ownership, Taste of Mumbai opened in the former Yen Wor Village spot at 2300 California SW a year and a half ago.

Like buffet concept—wish luck. Hope they can distinguish themselves…refresh the name and look too.

“Nobody from before is working here now.”Well, that escalated quickly.

The food was really good before.  Hopefully the new people working there learned the recipes before everyone left, or have something even better to offer.  The buffet is interesting, we’ll definitely give it a shot.

Buffet is interesting but I wish there was greater detail about in on the menu (specifically how many different Vegetarian dishes are on offer in the buffet). I hope they succeed!

Indian buffets are typically rotating dishes, so you don’t really know what you’re going to get until you’re there.

My boyfriend and I went there several times because they had a separate vegan menu.  It looks like that’s gone under the new ownership (at least when looking at the online menu).  It’s nice to be able to easily see which options are vegan so I hope they bring that back.

These abrupt changes always shake me but I suppose “there’s always a new beginning” is the bright side of it?

Good luck to the new crew. I hope they promote the heck out of their food and service. It always surprises me when a new restaurant opens and then they disappear from consciousness. “If you build it they will come” rarely works. If I put my life savings and hard work into a restaurant I’d do everything I can to stay in people’s thoughts.

Just went there. Was delicious. Will be back.

It seems there must be a backstory to the quote “Nobody from before is working here now.”.  Curious. I ate at the old place twice and was not impressed. Still prefer Maharaja. I hope the new owner can step it up a notch.  Since they’re so close, we’ll definitely try.  Welcome to the neighborhood.

Glad to hear it’s under new management. The previous ownership was a disaster. Waitstaff was poorly trained, food was subpar and ambiance was … Bad. Looking forward to trying it again.

Went there last weekend. Was delicious.

Until a few months ago I loved this restaurant and had many a delicious lunch buffet there.  Then one day I went in and my favorite waiters were gone, the buffet had no labels on any of the dishes (and the dishes themselves looked nothing like the usual delicious offerings).  The new waiter was rude and surly (a big shock since prior staff were truly delightful). I wondered whether the owners were on vacation (as well as the chef!) but decided to risk it.  My lunch and the experience I had with the rude waiter led me to avoid returning.  Happy to hear about new management and I hope there are also friendly staff again and savory aromas of the high quality food I used to enjoy here.  I’ll give it a few more weeks and stop by if I see consistent positive reviews.

Tried it tonight and I think the food is better. They seem to have added some of the North Indian classics to the menu and it hit the spot.

Good, considering Maharaja stopped their lunch buffet years ago. I need a buffet for Indian food.

My experiences under the old ownership:
    1. The buffet? Passable.
    2. The indian pizza. Blah.
    3. The base menu? Really solid, with more south indian options, which I like.

The vibe I always got though is that the space is too big, and they could benefit from being half the size or even a pickup/delivery only kitchen.

They used to work out of the commissary kitchen but they were so busy the wait times were insane

West Seattle historically (maharaja, this place) has uninspired, oily, low-end, Indian-greasy-spoon-highway-diner-on-a-bad-day food. I know zero Indians (including myself)  that would recommend this place. Still waiting for an Indian place on the peninsula that knows what they are doing. These places wouldn’t last 2 seconds on the eastside with a more discerning on-average crowd for this cuisine. Nirmals, in pioneer square, is the closest legitimate place. Disappointingly, I have zero hopes for good Indian food west of the bridge. That said, the take out only food at their commissary kitchen was decent but the restaurant version was garbage.
