BIZNOTE: Here’s what’s next for the ex-Original Bakery, ex-Bel Gatto space in Fauntleroy

Thanks for the tip about activity in the Fauntleroy retail space that was most recently Bel Gatto after many decades as The Original Bakery. We’ve learned it will open this summer as an expansion of a Pilates studio in the same building. Along with the same programming already happening around the corner at Lagom Studios, there will be new saunas and classes, all by appointment.

“Community building is the whole purpose,” says owner Melina Moore. She bought the studio in 2022, when it was called Innate Vitality. At 435sf, the studio, tucked into the north side of the Endolyne building, can only accommodate 4 clients at a time, so Moore had started to look for a larger space. Poised to sign a lease in the Admiral District earlier this year, she found the bakery space suddenly available. “It felt very kismet,” she says, and allowed her to keep the business in the Fauntleroy neighborhood, which she came to love a number of years ago while teaching at the Cottage School at Gatewood Elementary.

With 2,000 additional square feet, Moore says there is enough space to have private sessions and group classes, including Yin yoga, at the same time. She envisions a “community wellness space,” with saunas and shower in the back and a “cozy corner” with tea where the bakery had its pastry case.

She plans to keep the current studio for community events, including sound baths, women’s circles, reiki and breath work, and astrology workshops.

Clients at a Pilates class Tuesday morning were thrilled about the larger space. “I’m super excited that she is expanding,” said one. Another described the Lagom space as a sanctuary in the city — “a neighborhood healing space.”

Moore says the Swedish word Lagom is about moving your body in balance and appreciation, something that is a guiding principle of her studio, along with a requirement that clients practice kindness in the space, where, “everyone is welcome.” Moore has 5 instructors working out of the current studio and will be hiring more for the expansion. Likely hours when she expands in July will be 7 am to 7:30 pm, depending on appointments.

100% agree.  How Sad. We need a great bakery here.

  • Rob May 21, 2025 (7:25 pm)

    Bring back the dough nuts.

    • John A. May 22, 2025 (12:54 pm)

Bring back the white-filled Bismarks, apple sauce donuts, community spirit!! Darn 😖

Bummer this would have been the perfect spot for a trendy bagel place

    • vibrant.savior_02@icloud.com May 21, 2025 (9:49 pm)

Bagels would be fantastic, yes, but parking at that location is in short supply. And no dice popping in for a dozen if there’s no place to park.

      • Alki resident May 21, 2025 (10:59 pm)

It used to be a very busy bakery for many years. Parking was never an issue.

      • Wsersident May 21, 2025 (11:01 pm)

No need for parking, most of the traffic coming through this corner is foot and ferry traffic.

      • Brian May 22, 2025 (7:54 am)

Lots of people walk and have zero need for parking spots.

      • Boogs May 22, 2025 (4:28 pm)

I used to live one block from there. There’s plenty of parking. Maybe you can’t park directly in front, but definitely within a block or two except for peak rush.

  • Mr J May 21, 2025 (9:54 pm)

Open your own bakeries etc. don’t comment I wish it was what I wanted if you’re not willing to put in the work and build your own thing.

    • Amy May 22, 2025 (8:23 am)

      THANK YOU

    • Elton May 22, 2025 (11:23 am)

+100 Bel Gatto was not a ringing success, why are people so adamant another one will succeed? We all miss Original Bakery, but it’s gone and people have to accept that. Best of luck to the new owners!

      • Jim May 22, 2025 (6:15 pm)

They were often lines down the street at the previous place if they had kept up even half the quality they would have been fine

  • Toshiro May 21, 2025 (9:54 pm)

    DO NUTS

    COF FEE

    this is not hard people

    • Get Real May 22, 2025 (4:58 am)

Sounds like you have business figured out.  Let me know when your shop opens and I’ll be happy to stop by.  Put your money behind your naive comments!

    • aa May 22, 2025 (6:31 am)

Owning a business is very hard.  Sure, the concept of donuts and coffee is simple. Putting together the money, leasing the space, buying equipment, hiring staff, paying a livable wage, providing health insurance, paying the wide variety of taxes, on and on.   And hopefully after all of that you have made enough to pay yourself.

      • Question Authority May 22, 2025 (1:20 pm)

No one should expect to earn a “livable wage” shucking donuts, the owner perhaps and a trained baker but not a cashier. Health Insurance would make a donut cost $10

        • Amy May 22, 2025 (2:04 pm)

funny your comment name and you are determining what someone should make.

          • Question Authority May 22, 2025 (4:24 pm)

FYI It’s a username much like many others, also there’s quite a difference in what skills, training and experience are required between actual skilled labor and providing counter service.

        • walkerws May 22, 2025 (2:23 pm)

Please should expect to early a livable wage if they are working. Ironic that your username is “Question Authority” when your comment is shilling for authority.

Bernie couldn’t find anyone who wanted to take over The Original Bakery.  Tried for years, then finally decided to retire after decades of showing up at in the middle of the night 6 days a week to make your donuts.  That’s before all of the “running a business” aspects, which continue to get harder and more expensive.  Running a bakery is not for the faint of heart – we’re incredibly lucky we had Bernie’s donuts for as long as we did.

  • Fauntleroy Friend May 21, 2025 (10:04 pm)

Great news! Excited to try the sauna!

  • Maddy May 21, 2025 (10:10 pm)

Amazing!!! Melina and Lagom Studios are the best! Grateful this is in my neighborhood.

  • Kt May 22, 2025 (4:14 am)

Nice to see a local business succeeding!  Congrats!  Maybe the Wildwood Market could start carrying more baked goods for those who have no home baking skills?

  • Morgan May 22, 2025 (5:56 am)

    Doughnuts. The people wants Do-Nuts!!

  • Sad May 22, 2025 (6:38 am)

Wish it was a new bakery 🤩

  • Arbor Heights Mom May 22, 2025 (8:21 am)

Melina runs a great studio and this is an awesome addition to the neighborhood! Yay for the saunas and the larger studio!

  • walkerws May 22, 2025 (8:27 am)

Will it be a real sauna or an infrared “sauna”?

  • Treo Organic Salon May 22, 2025 (9:56 am)

Congratulations to Melina! She is a great neighbor and we wish her the best!

  • HTB May 22, 2025 (10:07 am)

Great news! Sounds like a win for everyone!

  • Glazed May 22, 2025 (10:26 am)

As tempting as doughnuts are, this is definitely a step in the right direction. Pilates good, doughnuts bad. Thankfully, Melina is a wonderful gem of a human who’s helping me avoid looking like a glazed old-fashioned. Congrats Melina and Lagom Studios!

    • Alki resident May 22, 2025 (2:22 pm)

I’ve never met a bad donut in my life. No need to hate on donuts.

      • Glazed May 25, 2025 (11:43 am)

Sure, donuts might seem innocent, but they’re literally defined by emptiness, an alluring void at their core that promises fulfillment yet never delivers. Can you truly trust anything that uses frosting and sprinkles to mask existential dread? If donuts could drive, they’d surely cruise around in white vans, offering free pastries to lure unsuspecting souls. Donuts aren’t just snacks; they’re edible metaphors for humanity’s futile attempts to fill our inner voids with sugar, robbing us of free will and turning us into saccharine slaves endlessly chasing cheap hits of serotonin. Resist pastry propaganda! So… Donuts ARE bad… unless the above doesn’t sound just a little sinister to you?

  • JW May 22, 2025 (10:31 am)

It’s so exciting the Lagom is expanding! I can’t wait to check out the new space when it’s ready, and also excited for the community events mentioned for the current space! Movement and community are SO important for everyone, so it’s really great for the neighborhood that this is happening ^_^ Congrats to the owner!

  • LiveLikeMatthewC May 22, 2025 (10:31 am)

Melina is a gem of a human and she really practices what she preaches about kindness in the world. So proud of her and her studio and excited for the expansion of a fantastic addition to that neighborhood. 💛💙

  • Michelle May 22, 2025 (1:06 pm)

GOOD LUCK TO YOU I HOPE YOU HAVE MANY GREAT YEARS IN THAT SPOT!!!!!

  • sw May 22, 2025 (2:32 pm)

So glad that Melina is staying in Fauntleroy!  Would have been a shame to lose Lagom to Admiral.  She runs a great studio and is an asset to the neighborhood.  Give pilates a try!

  • Niko May 22, 2025 (4:11 pm)

So let me get this straight after essentially forcing Bernie out of business and then creating this overpriced bougie bakery Joe’s management had to shut it down and now it’s just becoming a Pilates studio. I’m glad a local business is getting more space but this is very disappointing

Sorry, comment time is over.
