TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Monday watch, 8th week of West Seattle Bridge closure

5:44 AM: 49th morning without the high-rise West Seattle Bridge. If you are headed out this morning – here’s the camera for the restricted-access low bridge (where SPD enforcement continues):

The main detour route across the Duwamish River is the 1st Avenue South Bridge (map). To get to I-5, exit onto Michigan at the bridge’s north end. Here are cameras for the bridge and Michigan east of it:

The South Park Bridge (map) can also take you across the river. Here’s the South Park camera:

Both bridges open for marine traffic; check the @SDOTBridges Twitter feed for info about openings.

NEW CAMERAS: SDOT has added 6 new cameras, along 35th and Roxbury. Here are two:

35th/Roxbury:

35th/Morgan:

You can see any and all of the local traffic cams, including the 6 new ones in West Seattle, here.

Think there’s any possibility that the awful pavement on westbound SW Alaska, between the Grove and Fauntleroy could ever get addressed? On a bike, its absolutely teethjarrimg. And how about retiming the light at Fauntleroy and Alaska? With near zero traffic on Fauntleroy,  everyone sits on Alaska waiting for nothing.

    • Railroaded May 11, 2020 (10:12 am)

Hopefully, Eddie, you called/contacted SDOT about that light. When I lived in West Seattle, I generally found SDOT responsive to problems. I doubt they monitor the comments on this blog, though.

I think with the low traffic they should just turn one lane of Fauntleroy between Avalon and Alaska into a temporary bike lane. Would make it much easier to bike to Trader Joe’s.

      • Native May 11, 2020 (11:21 am)

Great idea… why not just shut Fauntleroy down to horse and buggie only and have a senior walking day from Alki to the junction….. but better yet put it under a study by the council and Mayor until the next century as we do now.

      • Chelsea May 11, 2020 (4:39 pm)

Many of us on the road are essential workers trying to get to the hospitals on pill hill. I think that trumps trips to Trader Joe’s.

        • Joe Z May 11, 2020 (8:39 pm)

When’s the last time you were stuck behind more than 1 or 2 cars on Fauntleroy?

        • Tsurly May 12, 2020 (6:30 am)

Essential workers (myself included) also ride bikes.

    • JES May 11, 2020 (1:18 pm)

It’s jarring in a car! And beyond Fauntleroy, Alaska at the light next to Cupcake Royale is ridiculous.

  • Roms May 11, 2020 (10:16 am)

The last 2 cameras are terrible for the privacy of the people living/working in these buildings…

    • Rumbles May 11, 2020 (11:43 am)

It doesn’t look too bad, plus it looks like they have curtains too.

    • Azimuth May 11, 2020 (12:31 pm)

      No kidding. Yikes!

    • John May 11, 2020 (2:34 pm)

What is the concern?  These cameras display a public street. People are not identifiable.  There is no right to not being photographed in a public space.

      • Roms May 11, 2020 (6:32 pm)

The cameras have been moved since I commented. Before, you could clearly see inside two buildings.

    • Steve May 11, 2020 (5:05 pm)

35th and Morgan is drug dealer corner! Can we point that camera little towards Walgreens?! :)

  • West Seattle Hipster May 11, 2020 (11:30 am)

While that would be beneficial for yourself, it would not be for the majority of people that use other modes of transportation on that street.

  • Flo B May 11, 2020 (12:16 pm)

WSB. Any plans for any cameras along West Marginal??

  • YES2WS May 11, 2020 (12:40 pm)

No kidding. Is that even legal?

  • Flo B May 11, 2020 (1:54 pm)

WSB. Does SDOT have any plans to add camera’s to West Marginal??.

    • WSB May 11, 2020 (2:05 pm)

I’m still waiting for the reply to my question sent Friday about where else cameras are planned…

  • Matthew May 11, 2020 (2:56 pm)

Is there any chance SDOT would re-pave/get rid of that piece of unused old train tracks that cross West Marginal SW by The Continental Van Lines building. You really have to slow down when crossing them not to mess up your suspension and shock absorbers.

  • Recall Durkan May 11, 2020 (4:02 pm)

Does SDOT have any plans yet to fix the busiest bridge in the city? Just curious. Its been two months.

    • miws May 12, 2020 (7:08 am)

RD,  You new here? WSB has been tirelessly and thoroughly covering SDOT’s progress on this. —Mike
