TRAFFIC/TRANSIT: Friday watch, 5th week of West Seattle Bridge closure, with weekend work ahead

5:53 AM: 32nd morning without the high-rise West Seattle Bridge. Here are the cameras for the restricted-access low bridge and the 5-way intersection west of it:

For general traffic, the main route across the Duwamish River is the 1st Avenue South Bridge (map) – that’s also the main way to get to I-5, exiting at Michigan. Here are cameras for the bridge and Michigan east of it:

The other option is the South Park Bridge (map), which drops you onto East Marginal Way one mile south of the north end of the 1st Ave. South Bridge. Here’s the South Park camera:

Check the @SDOTBridges Twitter feed to see if a bridge is opening for marine traffic.

ROAD WORK ALERT: SDOT plans weekend work repaving the 5-way intersection (Chelan/Spokane/Delridge/West Marginal) along with some lane reconfiguration there and on the north end of Delridge Way.

TRANSIT ALERTS: Metro’s third round of service cuts has a further-reduced schedule in effect – details here. Also, bus capacity is now restricted … The Water Taxi continues its reduced (and shuttle-less) schedule.

Did any else notice that the speed limit is now 25mph, instead of 35mph, heading South on 35th (starting after Avalon or Alaska intersection)?

All arterials in Seattle are moving to 25mph. Clearly another salvo in the War On Cars. (Actual reason: it’s safer and we’ve had a spike in pedestrian deaths in the city)

Yes, lowering speed limits is actually the centerpiece of SDOT’s plan to deal with the bridge being out of commission. I wish I was joking.

No, it’s not the “centerpiece.” The citywide speed-limit cut was announced months ago.

I wish you were joking too, the fact that you actually believe that is alarming.

Drive like a jerk, get treated like a jerk. Quit exceeding the speed limit/endangering other drivers/bicycles/pedestrians, and things like this will not happen.

Looks like they are now ticketing offenders on the lower bridge.

Thanks! Every weekday for two weeks now. (Not sure if they’ve been out on weekends.)

I wonder if police will do some educating of cyclists at this intersection? I know they are allowed to use the bridge but they have to obey traffic laws and they aren’t according to the video feed provided on the SDOT page. But this intersection is no different than any other intersection in W Seattle.Cop there at 5:11 when I type this is having people turn around. A lot of personal vehicles are trying to use the low bridge via Chelan and Marginal Way intersection. They were writing a lot of tickets this morning.

Cop was there for about 20 minutes. No cops there now and it’s a free for all.

Sorry, comment time is over.
