Seen off West Seattle: Submarine, northbound

Thanks to Jim Borrow for the photo of a U.S. Navy submarine seen headed northbound past West Seattle after leaving Bremerton earlier today. We have yet to learn the secrets of IDing submarines, but as noted in this recent Kitsap Sun report about submarine maintenance, Bremerton is homeport to two.

We were having lunch over at The Market and saw this across the Bay. What a fun surprise!

I’m sure that West Seattlites aren’t the only ones watching that submarine depart. You can probably bet that Chinese and/or Russian satellites have been tasked to track any departures as closely as possible. The sub likely will submerge to deep water and will undertake a series of course changes designed to conceal its actual course.

I saw this today from the air while flying into Boeing Field. That is either USS Seawolf or Connecticut, as both are homeported at Bremerton. Very cool!

This could be why this bird was all up in arms – or was he possibly giving directions ?

It’s always nice to be reminded that we live so close to one of the largest nuclear weapons depot in the world. #prioritytarget
