If you haven’t locked in your 4th of July plans yet – here’s how transit plans to handle the holiday:

Revelers celebrating Independence Day this year will be able to ride Link trains until 2 a.m. on Thursday, July 5 — an hour later than normal. For bus riders, King County Metro will deploy more than 40 extra buses from 10:30 p.m. to midnight as needed on routes serving Seattle Center, Gas Works Park, downtown and light rail stations to help crowds get home. Bus riders should use regularly published timetables and schedules for their routes, and expect possible delays during busy times and when there are crowds.

The last southbound Link train from University of Washington Station will leave at 2 a.m. The last northbound train from Angle Lake Station will leave at 1 a.m. Southbound trains from the UW will operate every 30 minutes starting at midnight. Northbound trains from Angle Lake will operate every 30 minutes starting at 11:30 p.m. The downtown transit tunnel, which will stay open late to accommodate extended light rail service, will close at 2:20 a.m.

Light rail trains will otherwise operate on a Sunday schedule on July 4. Link service will resume normal weekday operating hours on July 5.

Metro will add 250 hours of service, augmenting 20 bus routes that serve large crowds after July 4 festivities, as well as routes that connect with Link light rail. Routes with extra service as needed will include 5, 8, 26, 28, 31, 32, 40, 44, 49, 62, 70, 120, RapidRide A, B, C, D and E lines, and ST Routes 545, 550, and 554. Metro supervisors will monitor crowds during the evening and deploy the extra service where it is needed.

Metro bus customers are reminded that Metro is switching to a simple fare of $2.75 on July 1.

Several ST Express bus routes will not operate on July 4, while other routes will run on a Sunday schedule. Sounder commuter rail service also will not operate on July 4. Except for the extra buses described above, Metro will operate on a normal Sunday/Holiday schedule. Also of note, the West Seattle Water Taxi is running a Sunday schedule on the 4th.

Remembering Gertrude Manly, 1926-2018

The family of Gertrude E. Manly is sharing this remembrance with the community:

Gertrude Elaine Manly, beloved daughter of William and Mary Agnes Schneider, was called home June 27, 2018, at the age of 91, after a short illness. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Mabel DiCaro (Carl), husband James, longtime companion Geoffrey Warren, and granddaughter Katie Chale.

Born in Ouray, Colorado, in the fall of 1926, she grew up in many places, including Ouray, the Philippine
Islands, and Southern California. As a military wife, Gertrude and family followed James’s Navy career, living in San Diego, Long Beach, Portland, OR. Bremerton, and Guam. Later she raised her family in Kansas and California before settling in West Seattle in the mid-’60s, working for Montgomery Ward, J.C. Penney, and Grange Insurance.

Gertrude enjoyed volunteering with the Boy and Girl Scouts, chaperoning high-school-band trips to Victoria, B.C., and watching parades in the summertime with her family. A real treat was seeing the Rose Parade in Pasadena with her son Bill and his wife Roberta, and a trip to England with her companion Geoffrey. One of her favorite activities was a good home BBQ with family.

Gertrude is survived by her sons Bill (Roberta), Dan (Becky,) daughters Dolly Chale (Jeff), Fran Coy (Karl), eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

In lieu of a service, at Gertrude’s request, family and friends will gather for a celebration of life in her honor.

Now that West Seattle Summer Fest 2018 is 13 days away – Friday-Sunday, July 13-15, in The Junction – it’s time to start counting down. First up, let’s talk about GreenLife, the sustainability expo/festival-within-a-festival that you’ll find at Summer Fest again this year. From Stu Hennessey:

The GreenLife Festival will focus on the issues surrounding the failing Southern Resident Killer Whale population and the health of the Salish Sea. There are many solvable issues connected to the decline of our local waters, including Puget Sound. We will examine these issues at the Junction Plaza Park location.

Much of the marine wildlife is in decline, (including) the salmon that our Orcas depend on for survival. The 3 days of the festival will be divided into Day 1: What can we as individuals do? Day 2: What is being done with legislation? And Day 3: What solutions are already helping?

This will be very enlightening for the whole family. We will have a virtual reality underwater tour of the Puget Sound with 3D headsets, presented by “Diver Laura” James. There will be a mechanical Orca whale ride for the kids. You will hear a lot about what is being done by our local governments, and on Saturday night, July 14th, we will be showing the movie “DamNation” at the West Seattle Senior Center (Oregon and California). The movie is free and starts at 7 pm. We hope you are concerned about the decline of our native Orcas and will want to learn more about what can be done. The GreenLife Festival is a project of Sustainable West Seattle. Sponsors include Verity Credit Union, Alki Bike and Board, West Seattle Nursery, PCC, West Seattle Electric and Solar, and Waste Management.

And as part of that:

Governor Inslee’s task force on the Southern Resident Orca crisis wants to hear from you. Task force director Stephanie Solien will be coming to the GreenLife Festival on Saturday, July 14th, at 12 noon.

The objective is to present the task force mission and to hear from the public their concerns and comments about the failing status of our iconic Orca population.

Your concern and your comments can have an impact on what the task force will recommend to the Governor for future action.

4:05 PM: Seattle Fire is sending a water-rescue response to the 7000 block of Beach Drive SW (Lowman Beach vicinity), including some units to the Don Armeni/Seacrest area, where anyone rescued would be taken. We haven’t yet heard the circumstances of who might need rescuing. More to come.

4:10 PM: Per scanner, the report was that two kayakers are possibly in trouble.

4:12 PM: And now – SFD says it’s found the kayakers, and they’re already out of the water.

4:19 PM: Added a photo – looks like a different type of watercraft; SFD assisted in bringing it up from Lowman Beach. Our crew confirms everyone’s OK.

12:09 PM: That’s just part of the line of demonstrators who marched around High Point Commons Park and then up to and north along 35th. No roads blocked – all on sidewalks. They were planning to turn back to the park after reaching the library. It’s one of many similar rallies/marches around the US today. Photos and video when we are back at HQ.

She explained, “The most remarkable thing about today was that the organizers never showed up. This lady just led it on her own with input from us as to where to March. We stayed on public sidewalks. Wish I had gotten this lady’s name!” The original announcement was published via the moveon.org website, which listed hundreds of marches/rallies around the country; the nearest to West Seattle was held outside the federal detention center in SeaTac.

UPDATE: West Seattle Junction recycling event – and what you need to know if you are bringing documents for shredding

11:20 AM: The recycling/shredding event happening right now in The Junction is a multi-station setup – Goodwill for reusables, Friendly Earth for electronics and metal, plus spots to drop off cardboard and even styrofoam. And then there’s the big hit of the day … shredding.

The truck is almost maxed out and is going to have to leave to get emptied – you can either just leave your shreddables or wait and don’t bring them until noonish. The overall event is on until 1 pm in the WSJA lot off 42nd – use the entrance closest to Oregon.

11:55 AM: Lora Swift from the Junction Association, which is presenting this along with the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce, just sent word the shredding truck has teturned.

Due to a permitting issue, event has been moved to High Point’s Commons Park. Park in the lower lot. Will be assembling at 10 am. Will be starting to March on Sylvan Way SW towards the Southwest Precinct at 11:30!

Commons Park is just north of Neighborhood House, which is at 6400 Sylvan Way SW.

FOLLOWUP: Break-in suspect charged, bail set at half a million dollars

7:24 PM: Criminal charges usually take a few days to prepare and file – but the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office worked fast in the case of the man arrested Thursday in connection with the south West Seattle break-ins. 26-year-old Keelan T. Malone was charged today and remains in the King County Jail, bail set at $500,000.

The charging documents aren’t yet available but the jail register lists the charge(s) as burglary/indecent liberties. We did receive the probable-cause documents from the prosecutor, which detail the incident in which a woman awakened to find the intruder crawling on the floor toward her bed, then getting onto it and proceeding to grope her. At one point, the document says, the victim’s disabled mother, who lives with her and the victim’s 9-month-old son, opened the door and asked if she was OK, and the attacker told her to say he was someone she knew. She pleaded with him to go away and subsequently offered him money, which he took and left. He left his phone behind, came back for it moments later, and that, the report says, was the last she saw of him until spotting him “in the neighborhood” yesterday. After being arrested and taken downtown for questioning, the report says, Malone denied involvement, but then acknowledged physical contact with the victim, and subsequently “began to tell (police) smaller details of the incident that clearly showed he was in the residence (that) night.”

That’s all we have pending the availability of the charging document. The probable-cause document lists a Judkins Park address as Malone’s “last-known address” and later says he is “homeless with no known ties to the community.” But a police source mentioned that the defendant is a former college-football player and an online search turns up a man with the same name, same birthdate, born in Seattle, having played at Villanova University in 2010, 2011, and 2012. No criminal record is showing for Malone in this state.

SATURDAY, 4:44 PM: The charging documents are now online. The only new information is confirmation that Malone is charged with two felonies – first-degree burglary with sexual motivation, and indecent liberties. Both are in connection with the same incident. (This doesn’t mean he won’t/can’t be charged with any of the others.) He is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment – to enter an initial plea – on July 12th.

Almost everything old is new again: See inside renovated EC Hughes, future home of Roxhill Elementary

Almost 30 years after Seattle Public Schools stopped using EC Hughes as a full-time elementary school, it will return to that status this fall. A September 4th ribbon-cutting ceremony will officially open the Sunrise Heights campus (7740 34th SW) as Roxhill Elementary at EC Hughes.

But first, the $14 million renovation project is wrapping up.

Back in October 2016, when plans were being finalized both for the Roxhill move and the Hughes renovation, we toured the historic school – a city landmark – with Seattle Public Schools’ Mike Skutack and DLR Group architect Ariel Mieling. We previewed the renovation plan in our report on that tour.

This week, we toured EC Hughes with them again, to see how the work has turned out. It’s not entirely done, but close. Throughout the building, as promised, there is homage to the past as well as new features for the future:

CAR BREAK-IN INSIDE GARAGE: From Parvoneh:

My boyfriend’s car was broken into last night in the Whittaker Apartments garage (Fauntleroy and Edmunds). They got into his trunk where he kept his camping and fishing equipment.

They stole his entire duffle bag full of stuff including fishing gear & hiking equipment.

Although I’m sure whoever took it will find a use for them, on the off chance someone finds a large Coleman duffle or Nike backpack, please let us know we would love to recover whatever we can.

GARAGE BREAK-IN: From Samantha:

I wanted to let you know of a break-in/theft that occurred (in the 1700 block of) Harbor Ave SW Wednesday night. Our building has ground floor storage units that are located in our secure parking area (surrounding walls/fence is at least 7′). Someone broke into our unit, our neighbor’s adjoining unit to our right, and cut through the wall in our unit to access the unit on our left. Despite only taking a few items from us, they must have spent a large amount of time rummaging through everything, as all of our boxes were pulled out and unpacked, and surprisingly roughly re-packed..

This felt really pre-meditated or planned, given the fact that a saw or similar instrument was used to cut through the demising wall (studs and everything). Additionally, the items stolen from our unit (were) a set of men’s golf clubs and tennis racket, but (they) left numerous other expensive items (skis, winter sports equipment, etc.).

CAR PROWL: From Mary:

Both my partner’s car as well as my car’s windows were smashed and car was rummaged through. We’re on 38th Avenue – just wanted everyone to be on the lookout!

EX-TULLY’S FOR SALE: Almost four months after Tully’s Coffee closed on Alki, the 2676 Alki SW building it had been renting for more than a decade is listed for sale. The flyer says you have to call the listing agent to inquire about the price, and also notes that leasing the space is an option too. Tully’s was officially evicted from the building, as it has been from others around the metro area, some weeks after the sudden shutdown. (Thanks to Jonathan French for the tip.)

NEW COFFEE SHOP FOR NORTH ADMIRAL: That’s what’s on the way to the space next to Mioposto at 2141 California SW:

The mortgage broker who originally was in the space has moved to Sunrise Heights. Documents on file with the city say the coffee shop for which the space is now being renovated will be called West Seattle Grounds. We have a message out in hopes of finding out more.

11 candidates in all (listed on this King County Elections page) are running for the seat that Sen. Sharon Nelson is giving up; the field will be narrowed to two by the August 7th primary, for which ballots will be mailed July 18th.

The next announced forum in West Seattle is planned by the WS Chamber of Commerce, 6:30 pm July 19th at the Disabled American Veterans hall (4857 Delridge Way SW), with a focus on transportation and business issues; all welcome.

Seattle Parks has announced it’ll turn the lights on Tuesday (July 3rd) and Wednesday (July 4th) at ballfields around the city in hopes of preventing damage from fireworks use. Four West Seattle fields are on the list for having the lights on 8 pm-11 pm both nights:

Three more reports to share before night’s end:

ANOTHER OCCUPIED BREAK-IN: Just before getting word of the arrests in the 11th/12th/13th SW burglaries, we were looking into another “occupied burglary,” early today in the 9000 block of 16th SW. But this wasn’t related, police told us – they believe the intruder was “looking for shelter,” entering a house that had a prior incarnation involving drugs, and his description was different – “unknown race,” 5’10”, slender. No arrest reported.

POSSIBLE BURGLARY ATTEMPTS: Anonymous reader report:

Location: 12th Ave SW between SW Holden St. and SW Kenyon St. (7700 block of 12th Ave SW)

I awoke at 5 am this morning and opened my shades. An hour or so later, I looked out my kitchen window and a screen was leaning against my garage door that hadn’t been there earlier. I went to my next-door neighbors and saw that the screen had been removed from one of their windows. I spoke with my neighbor and scary thing is that they were home during this attempt. It sounds like their dog barking may have scared the suspect off.

PACKAGE TAKEN: This reader report includes a screenshot from a brief video clip showing someone taking a package from outside an apartment at West Ridge Park on Delridge south of Holden:

The package contained work boots.

UPDATE: Police standoff near Southwest Precinct ends with 1 in custody

10:09 PM: Police have blocked off an area just south of the Southwest Precinct/Home Depot vicinity because of a standoff with a man who is reported to be armed with a gun and machete, at a building on 24th SW. No injuries reported but you will want to avoid the area. We’re monitoring.

10:30 PM: Per radio, police have called in negotiators and SWAT and continue trying to get the man to surrender.

10:32 PM: And he’s now in custody. No injuries reported.

ADDED FRIDAY AFTERNOON: This incident is now summarized on SPD Blotter. The rifle seen with the suspect, who is 33 years old, turned out to be a BB gun.

Just a little over a month until hydroplanes race at Seafair – and the West Seattle Junction got a bit of a preview today when defending national champion Miss HomeStreet visited the West Seattle branch of its sponsor, HomeStreet Bank (also a WSB sponsor). The public was welcome to visit this afternoon, which is also when we photographed branch manager Nam Le and his staff with the hydro:

Then tonight, the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce converged on the branch (and the hydro) for this month’s After Hours.

Though it’s midsummer, there was a little Christmas atmosphere in one corner – “Santa Al” and The Christmas People, Rev. Fred Hutchinson and Ruth Bishop:

They invite you to Christmas in July, a benefit dinner and auction July 22nd at the Masonic Center – full details in our calendar listing. That by the way is also the day WestSide Baby is hosting its annual Diaper Drive Bash:

Pride Month storytime brings Mama T to West Seattle Y

Big turnout for a special storytime tonight at the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) – in honor of Pride Month, Mama T was the guest for Drag Queen Story Hour.

Via Instagram, she said, “I love being able to work with children while opening their minds and hearts to the magical and diverse world we live in!”

P.S. The Pride Month toiletry-donation drive for LGBTQ+ youth continues at the Y (3622 SW Snoqualmie) through Saturday.

BIZNOTE: Oh’s Sandwiches opening soon in South Admiral

Thanks to Holly for the tip! That banner has gone up over a Revel live-work unit at 3217 California SW [map], announcing that Oh’s Sandwiches is on the way, with Vietnamese sandwiches and coffee. Checking it out after that tip, we spotted someone doing exterior work this afternoon. They told us they’re hoping to have the shop open next week; Oh’s hasn’t finalized its hours yet but for starters it’ll probably be morning through late afternoon.
