UPDATE: Crash on West Marginal Way SW sends driver to hospital

5:34 PM: Thanks to the caller who just let us know about a crash on West Marginal Way SW. It’s in the 3800 block, according to the SFD log, just south of the bridge; the caller says it appears the driver hit a tree on the southbound side, and a private ambulance is on scene. We’re on our way to check it out.

6:02 PM: The wrecked car is wrapped around a tree and not in travel lanes; police say the driver had gotten himself out before they arrived, and was taken to a hospital to be checked out. Besides totaling the car, he took out a few traffic signs.

I concur, it does appear the car hit a tree. 😳

Glad the driver is OK, but it’s a good thing there was no one on the passenger side.

Is it SOP to pull the battery like that. I can’t imagine it just landed there.

It’s SOP to at least cut the battery cables (in a crash with significant vehicle damage), since that will remove power from the air bags & remove a source of energy that could cause arcing/lead to a fire in the damaged vehicle components.

I found that my car automatically ‘blows’ the main battery terminal on discharge of the airbags for the very reason LTFD mentions.

As for this incident, it’s likely the only thing salvageable from the car is the battery. That is one mangled mess.

I thought the wheels/rims didn’t look too bad, but I’m only seeing 2 of the 4 in a photo.

Yeah the driver was my friend also , talked to him this morning and hes fine and is already out of the hospital with minor injuries. Crazy , im glad hes ok.

Sorry, I thought I’d mentioned above, but the other side of the car looked MUCH, MUCH worse … because of the location, we couldn’t photograph it without stepping into a busy street by a corner that people often take at high speed, and, well, some things aren’t worth risking your life.
