West Seattle whales: Orcas reported in Elliott Bay

2:30 PM: Just got this report via text, and the Orca Network has a report too – orcas in Elliott Bay, likely closer to downtown than West Seattle. Let us know if you see them!

4:08 PM: We had no luck but Amy Shuster sent the photo we’ve just added, taken from the Bainbridge ferry – thank you!

The Port expansion project will put an end to such iconic sights.  The devastation to Puget Sound from the construction phase alone will alter this delicate ecosystem forever.  The noise from the ships is lethal to orcas, as well as other whales and marine life.

@Anonyme: Link to said project? I suddenly feel completely out of the loop (I know more about the dreaded Pebble Mine project in Bristol Bay than I do about any local threats to our bay) and only find “Port” references taking me to SeaTac links. Details on your post appreciated!

If you scroll down the list at the right side of the screen to “Port of Seattle”, you will find a number of WSB articles on the Terminal 5 ‘improvement’ project.  The plan includes dredging the harbor to make it deeper for gigantic super ships to access the harbor off West Seattle.  The Port agreed to an environmental review only after West Seattleites demanded one.  It is not yet completed.  Ironically, from the sound of it, the ‘environmental’ review will not take into account the impact on the natural environment, but the impact on the neighborhood.  I could be wrong about that; I hope so, anyway.

Thanks Anonyme–I’ll look into those links. At the very least I’d be worried about stirring up all the silt laden with heavy metal and other pollutants. I certainly hope the environment–and not just real estate values–is being considered.

Sorry, comment time is over.
