West Seattle traffic alert: Roxbury road work continues

Thanks to WSB’er “Smokeycretin9” for photos of, and an update on, the road work that’s been under way since Thursday on SW Roxbury in the 23rd-24th vicinity (mentioned again today in our daily traffic/transit tracker). He says it appears this work, described by SDOT only as replacement of a concrete panel in the road, will take care of the notorious “bump” in the area. But in the meantime, the work’s scheduled to continue until 5 or so, and he says “Roxbury is down to one lane for both directions with flaggers directing traffic. Traffic is backing up into White Center going West and past Safeway going East.” So if you’re heading that way, you might consider an alternate route.

Please remember not to speed down side streets to avoid roadwork. You’ll get where you’re going easily enough.

Yes finally! I just mentioned this bump the other night on our way home, how annoying it is.

I spoke to the crew, and they are also going to be going similar work near 16th? He was a bit unsure exactly where, but I am crossing my fingers for westbound, just after 17th!! Hooray for SDOT!

Probably the panel between 15th and 16th

Supposedly they had done that earlier in the week.

Slowly but surely maybe they’ll do all of Roxbury???!

Just curious – is this road the responsibility of Seattle or King Co, since it is on the border?

    • WSB August 9, 2013 (7:58 pm)

The work is happening on the north side, westbound, which is City of Seattle responsibility. The line actually goes right down the middle along much of Roxbury (not all – for example, Holy Family Church at 20th is in city limits).

Yea fix the road and then put a speed camera on it. Next they’ll put a bus lane on it and then add a bike route.

Actually TR – SDOT is responsible right up to the South curb, so actually Roxbury maintenance is SDOT. Something we learned when putting the request for a study together. The southern sidewalk is King Co. Also, they replaced both north and southbound sections of Roxbury. It looks great!

Tracy, we actually found out that the “line” is just for legal geography. SDOT maintains it up to the curb on the county side, then then the county takes over. I don’t how it works with the north end border roads.

Interesting, given some infrastructure differences in places like the 16th/Rox intersection. Anyway, public-safety agencies take the boundary pretty seriously. If something happens in the eastbound lanes, and SPD gets the original call, they hand it off to North Highline FD/KCSO – seen that time and time again in incidents we’ve covered. (Or vice versa.)

Sorry, comment time is over.
