Seafair traffic alert: No Blue Angels, but yes, I-90 bridge closures

WSDOT says that even though the Blue Angels aren’t here for Seafair because of federal budgeting changes, the I-90 bridge still has to close daily this coming Friday through Sunday for the jets that are starring in the air show instead, the Patriots Jet Team. I-90 will be closed from I-5 in Seattle to Island Crest Way on Mercer Island, 1:15-2:40 pm each day, Friday 8/2, Saturday 8/3, and Sunday 8/4. Adjacent ramps will close too. Read the full announcement here.

I could only take so much power rock. Are they flying out of Boeing Field or Renton?

Any idea on boat traffic? Will they be clearing Andrews Bay, etc. during the practices and shows?

stupid question (and too lazy to click on the full announcement) alert! Is I-90 closed to bikes and joggers on the bike/pedestrian path during these times as well?

    No Blues, who really cares.

I’m bummed about that myself, but nonetheless, the bridge is closing, and that will affect people regardless of whether they care …

Possibly a stupid question, but is Seward Park closed during Seafair weekend? With or without the Blue Angels? I know I’ve seen the parking lot roped off in the past, but am wondering if you can still access it via walking/bicycling?

Seward Park is entirely closed during the main air show.

The whole policy of closing the bridge, Seward Park and the entire lake between I-90 and Seward Park is a ridiculuous effort of the safety freaks who no bounds, and refuse to consider actual statistics and massive inconvenience.

You may notice that the rules don’t apply to the Rich folks who pay Seafair $$$ to tie to the log boom right inside the safety zone. Coincidence??? Unlikely.

Closing the bridge is more for the risk of people getting into accidents while gawking, I would imagine.

Bah. No Angels, no seafair. Gw and ‘bama spent trillions on useless wars. They’ve decimated this country.

Seward park WILL be open this year. The flight box for the patriots is a bit smaller so no need to close the park. As for Rico statement about the “rich people on the log boom” the logboom is NOT in the flight box for the blues or any other act. The planes may fly over the boom but they are not doing aaerobatic ( wings at 60+ degrees or nose up or down over 30 degrees) at any time over the log boom.

People, it’s one day a year………get over it. If you watch the air show on their website, they are actually pretty darn good. Not their fault they don’t have the “Angels” name. I’m a die hard Angels fan, but give them a break. And relax, it’s the weekend!

Is this why it looks like airplanes are flying over white center/arbor heights, possibly from Sea-Tac? To avoid I-90 area?

    • WSB August 2, 2013 (1:51 pm)

The flight patterns usually change for Seafair airshow practice. The Patriots were supposedly due in a short time ago – WSDOT tweeted a photo of some diehards with umbrellas standing on the I-90 bridge deck …

Sorry, comment time is over.
