Highland Park Spraypark, day 1: Back in action!

4:49 PM: We finally made it over to Highland Park Spraypark, on its first day of operations, and found out it’s hit a bit of trouble – the water quit working about half an hour ago. So if you were planning on going over this evening – be forewarned. We’ll be checking back in a bit to see if it’s been fixed, since we’re told Seattle Parks has already been notified.

5:09 PM UPDATE: Joelle Hammerstad from Parks confirms staff is on the way to try to fix it.

5:35 PM UPDATE: It’s working! And open till 8, at 11th/Cloverdale.

Oh, you know. They’ve mentioned it a few times. ;)

tl;dr: a spray park is a more economical answer to a pool. It uses less water and doesn’t require a lifeguard.

Thanks, Andi. When I was a kid we just had the goofy things we attached to the garden hose, ilke the one that swirled water spray, and then of course Slip ‘n’ Slide (which I just saw in the window at Atomic Boys in Admiral) … These have been around for quite some time; our kid loved going to them (in other communities) when he was toddler/preschooler age, and he’s now going into his senior year in high school … But this is the first one in West Seattle. TR

Man spray parks are SOOOOO FUN and FREE!! Our tax dollars at work? Maybe?! Ha! We have one near our place in shoreline.(yes shoreline! I like to check up on whats going on in my home town) ;)

We went and it was wonderful! The only negative was some of the kids had those big blaster water guns, and one of them kept going around and getting kids in the face with it, whether they liked it or not. Other than that, it was fun!

We took our 2 year-old yesterday. I’m not sure who had more fun; him or me. I will say that I expected it to cover a larger area, but even with the number of families there, it still worked out. For those of you going during the hot weather, please know that there is very little shade around the spray park and playground. Portions of Highland Park that are shaded and adjacent to the spray area are currently closed off for lawn irrigation. Lastly, my advice to parents is to join in on the wet fun. It was a great way to cool down.
