Reminder: West Seattle 5K Sunday morning, Summer Streets all day – see the activity list!

(Till the morning preview is published, this reminder will stay atop the home page)

One more reminder – Harbor and Alki Avenues will be closed from Don Armeni to 63rd SW all Sunday morning because of the West Seattle 5K (co-sponsored by WSB), and then afterward, starting around 11 am, traffic will remain restricted to residents from Don Armeni to the start of the actual Seattle Summer Streets closure at 56th. That lasts until 5 pm. And the city now has an extensive list of what activities you’ll find tomorrow and where – see it here (PDF). There’s also an Alki bus detour map – see that here (PDF). And even if you’re not signed up for the West Seattle 5K, just show up at the Alki Bathhouse starting at 8 am for last-minute registration.

It would be nice if the City sent an announcement via mail or door hanger advising of this totally worthless street closure. I can see it for the 5K run, but until 5 PM? Had to cancel a reunion at the last minute as there is NO non-resident access to Alki residential area. Bummer. How do the businesses feel about this?

On a sunny warm day closing the street may not seem like a very good idea to many. On a cloudy rainy day the post run events may draw additional consumer foot traffic to Alki Beach.

The SDOT person who’s been working on this for months, Sonia, is here and says she is SO sad about the rain … c’mon down and check things out anyway. LOTS going on.

This year’s closure of only 56th to 63rd for the full day is an improvement over prior years…when the entirety of Alki Ave was closed until 5pm.
    .
Opening up Alki Ave up to 56th after the 5k (ie, at 11am) was something the businesses asked for and I’m glad the city changed to accommodate.

Last year, this was the only stretch totally closed, too..

I was trying to get to Alki for an open house around 3pm yesterday. I was surprised to find that it was still closed to vehicle traffic, near the Don Armeni boat ramp. I thought that stretch was supposed to be open after the race?

Sonic – We included in our previews the news that it would be restricted from Don Armeni to the car-free zone. SDOT said that was also the case last year though I don’t recall it being in the advance notice, and I’m not sure what the difference is, then, between having the shorter car-free zone and just doing what they did the first three times, which was have it all car-free except for the residents’ lane, from Don Armeni to 63rd … TR
