(WSB photo from July 2011 Summer Fest)
Never too soon to think about summer. Just five months till the 30th annual West Seattle Summer Fest, according to the WS Junction Association, which says this year’s dates are July 13, 14, 15, announcing this afternoon that this year’s vendor applications are online now.

ADDED THURSDAY MORNING: WSJA’s Susan Melrose notes in comments that the application deadline is May 15th.

I wish there were less “corporate” booths and more art/crafts.

I really really hope that there will be more focus on the businesses of West Seattle instead of “Window Seller” or “Bath Redo” booths. Local Junction businesses pay for this event and the organizers of WS Summer Fest need to promote them more, not let them get pushed aside by some out of town company.

I find the pricing structure to be very odd for this festival. I have an energy work practice in WS, and I’d love to have a booth there and meet people in my neighborhood. It’s really not the type of work you want to do in a booth in a festival if you’re looking for peace and quiet. But if I don’t choose the “service for sale” category where you must perform a service in the booth, it would cost me $1200 more as a “commercial” business than it would otherwise.

We hear you West Seattle! More local business/craft, less window sales. Applications are open and West Seattle gets priority, but we can’t make them apply. If you don’t see more locals, it’s because they didn’t apply by the May 15th deadline. Also, commercial booths are limited to 10 (besides sponsors) to allow more space for the rest – and they also provide important income for this free event. And since Junction merchants host the event, they get top priority. Also returning this year will be the Art Dive Tent and the GreenLife Garden and Sustainability Expo – applications not yet available. Please help spread the word to locals and crafters that Summer Fest applications are open and they are wanted by the neighborhood. Thank you, Susan

Political groups, particularly those having anything to do with abortion, should be disallowed from this festival. Nobody wants to come up to the junction to see poster size prints of aborted fetuses.

My first thought was how un-West Seattle this event has become. Is there a discount for small/local businesses looking to purchase a booth? I get the corporate companies can shell out more money, but then this just feels like every other Seafair event in the summer. I wish it celebrated the West Seattle us residents love.
Why not rape the big corporations for more money, in return for slapping their logo on tons of posters and some fancy main booth, and give discounts to local West Seattle businesses/artists?
