Update: House fire call on Marine View Drive

9:56 PM: 11200 block of Marine View Drive (map) – on our way.

10:16 PM: At the scene. No smoke/flames visible. Looks like it wasn’t anything big, will have more details once we find the incident commander.

10:24 PM: SFD explains the home has new residents who just moved in and plugged in an appliance that shouldn’t have been plugged in; much smoke ensued. They used an extinguisher to get it under control before SFD arrived. Medics are checking out 1 resident now; also, fans are running to get the smoke cleared out.

Glad to hear they weren’t coming for us and our firepit on the hillside like they did a few years ago. We keep a bucket of water and a pack of hotdogs nearby just in case.

There are a lot of fire vehicles down there. I can see it from my backyard. Looks a little smokey but can’t tell much else.

After seeing 2 firetrucks, 1 medic truck, and the chiefs suv blaring by on 35th I’m surprised to read that it wasn’t anything big.

The same response is sent to a house fire regardless of what it is reported as or turns out to be. There’s a specific number and type of units. The philosophy is that it’s easier to call them off than to get there, say OMG this is huge, and call more (not just easier – can be a matter of life and death if you get there and find out someone’s life is in danger, which is possible even in a small fire). You can see this on the live 911 page any time a “fire in single-family residence” or “fire in building” call is dispatched.

What kind of appliance are you not supposed to plug in? Assuming it has a cord and prongs… Was it a cat? or a fork?Well, it could be that I just did 13 hours of yard work. I guess it’s not that important as long as everyone is ok.

What our crew at the scene was told was that it was some kind of barbecue/outdoor cooking appliance that was mistaken for a freezer, in the carport.

I’m with Nutkin. How the heck does someone confuse a cooking appliance for a freezer?! I’m not blaming the victim. I’m just sayin’!

We live one block away and thought the world as we know it was about to end.

Sorry, comment time is over.
