West Seattle Crime Watch: Admiral Theater burglarized

2:46 PM: Thanks to the WSB’ers who tipped us to this via text message and WSB Forums post: The Admiral Theater is closed was closed earlier today because it’s been burglarized. Police were still there when WSB’s Katie Meyer went over a short time ago to investigate the reports. According to what she learned from Admiral staffer Sean and police, the break-in happened around 5 am – it set off an alarm but that didn’t get help fast enough to prevent the burglars from making off with what we are told was a significant amount of cash. The staffer says they don’t usually have that on hand but they had a problem with the drawer at the bank where they usually use to make night deposits, so they brought it back to the theater. So they’re closed for today – you’ll see “no movies today” on the marquee if you drive by (photo added 3:15 pm).

3:28 PM UPDATE: We’re told now that they plan to reopen later this afternoon, for the showings just before 4 pm, but are asking for exact change.

4:58 PM UPDATE: We checked with the Southwest Precinct for any additional information; Lt. Ron Smith says the preliminary report says it was a “forced entry” burglary, and that “electronics” were taken as well as cash.

Wow- crazy. I wonder if someone was aware of this “extra cash” seems a little coincidental to me.

  • Noelle January 23, 2011 (2:53 pm)

Thats sad to hear! I hope the find who ever took the cash!

Guys, please don’t speculate. Police are only now starting to investigate, and we just have the toplines, but we have followup messages out on several informational fronts. Saturday night is normally a big night for any movie theater, so it doesn’t necessarily take “knowing something” to figure that out. Meantime, wanted to get the word out since the immediate practical effect for potential patrons is that they are closed today … adding a shot of the marquee to that effect, in a moment. – TR

An inside job? Or friend of a friend who knew? Terrible thing to happen to this beautiful theatre.

  • Tim T January 23, 2011 (3:33 pm)

I like that idea. Movie night at the Admiral this week. Spread the word. (As long as it’s not that crappy Christina Aguilerra thing).

  • A January 23, 2011 (6:45 pm)

We were there today to see a movie when they opened and heard about the robbery. So instead we’ll head back this week and with an additional person! (a little more money for the theater) :)

Here is the schedule at the Admiral this week. If you have kids I recommend Megamind as fun for the whole family.

    • WSB January 24, 2011 (10:22 am)

The schedule can be found any time on the Admiral’s own site:
      http://www.farawayentertainment.com/admiral.html
      .
Which, as someone recently suggested, will be linked momentarily (permanently, TFN anyway) atop the WSB Events page. – TR

If it the theater had not been robbed, the marquee would have been funny.

  • CurlyQ January 24, 2011 (12:15 pm)

I love my West Seattle and the positive way so many respond to these kinds of negative events. We’ll try to take in Megamind with our kids this week too. By the way, their popcorn TOTALLY rules! Who knew?

  • Sgt. Hartman January 24, 2011 (1:04 pm)

Yes, it’s pure speculation but it does seem odd that the very rare instance of a burglary coincides with the very rare instance of keeping the cash at the theater. I certainly hope the investigation proves it to be a random coincidence but I’m sure they’ll look at it from all angles.

Either way, I agree. This seems a good time to make a point of seeing a movie and buying lots of popcorn.

This breaks my heart. I do hope who ever did this gets caught. I have noticed what I feel like is a swarm of criminal activity in WS as of late. Saddens me. Deeply saddens me.

  • Admiral Theater January 28, 2011 (9:53 pm)

Thanks for all the kind words. The person who did this knows who they are. Hope everyone will help out by coming to the movies in droves!
