South Park Bridge: Countdown to closure; business brainstorming

Jeff Gilbert of the Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor) is a longtime humorist as well as rock ‘n’ roller, entrepreneur, etc., and mashed that scenario up in honor of the all-day wake he’s holding for the South Park Bridge starting at 6 pm June 30, an hour before it closes forever, with no concrete commitments yet for full funding of a new bridge. (At the Feedback that night, they’ll supply the materials, you help build the symbolic replacement!) The people of South Park are still hashing out their plans for C-Day – the South Park Yahoo! group has been abuzz with ideas. And for the businesses of South Park, who suddenly will no longer have people walking, riding and driving across the bridge to dine and shop, they’ve got a big brainstorming session ahead this Wednesday – city reps from departments including the Office of Economic Development will be at the SP Community Center on 8th South at 6:30 pm (here’s a flyer in English/Spanish/Vietnamese). MONDAY NIGHT UPDATE: SDOT has announced sharrow-painting ahead in South Park – read on:

This week the Seattle Department of Transportation will install sharrows (shared lane markings) on several streets in the South Park neighborhood to remind drivers to share the lane with bicycles.

Bicyclists who are accustomed to crossing the South Park Bridge will need to take a different route over the Duwamish River when the bridge closes, starting June 30. The sharrows will be installed on a route connecting with the bicycle path on the First Avenue South Bridge, the closest alternate route over the river.

This is the first of several traffic improvements the city is making in the neighborhood to prepare for the South Park Bridge closure. Additional changes that affect traffic operations more will occur on and shortly after the date of the bridge closure.

The sharrows will be installed at the north end of South Park on South Holden Street from West Marginal Way South; where the Duwamish River Trail ends to Fifth Avenue South, on 5th Avenue S from S Holden Street to S Kenyon Street; and S Kenyon Street from 5th Avenue St to 7th Avenue S. Sharrows will also located on South Cloverdale Street from 8th to 14th Avenues, and on South Henderson Street from the Duwamish River Trail (west of 10th Avenue S) to 14th Avenue South.

This project is funded by the Bridging the Gap transportation levy approved by Seattle voters in November 2006.

Perhaps folks should bring shovels to the wake to show that the project is “shovel ready”.

Sorry, comment time is over.
