Update: Harbor Avenue briefly blocked for ‘rescue’ – but all now OK

(Photo added 12:46 pm – SFD units that were there till it turned out the diver wasn’t missing after all)
We are on our way to the scene of a water-rescue call in the 1600 block of Harbor SW. Traffic in the area is snarled and police have it blocked right at The Bridge, so if you are trying to get to Alki, approach from the west – don’t go from Avalon, Spokane, bottom of Admiral, etc. Still working to get details of what the rescue call’s all about. 12:24 PM UPDATE: Thanks to Katie for word that this call went out as a diver missing near Salty’s. 12:32 PM: Christopher Boffoli is there and reports that what was reported as a missing diver, turned out to be a diver that got separated from their companion/s and has been found. All this should clear up soon. (But traffic lags – and it’s already a busy, sunny day at the beach – so we still advise approaching Alki from the west, for a while.)

Morgan Junction Community Festival 2010 till 7 pm – report #1

 |   West Seattle festivals | West Seattle news

That’s the entertainment schedule at the Morgan Junction Community Festival, which has just begun at Morgan Junction Park (on California SW just north of Fauntleroy) – in and around the park, and don’t miss the dozens of booths behind Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor) and Zeeks Pizza, including ours:

(That’s our old advertising banner from the Water Taxi, which isn’t running ads on the new boat yet.) Also of note, in the “festival zone” at Beveridge Place Pub, a crowd’s gathering for the USA-England World Cup soccer match:

You can also watch at Abbondanza Pizza a bit further south, same side of California SW. So come down and enjoy the festival – be sure to get your free Bite of Morgan food coupons (Abbondanza is among the participants) at the Morgan Community Association booth at the park – the one in the left of this shot:

The festival continues till 7 pm. More coverage to come! 11:49 AM: Almost forgot – in addition to the Bite tastes, you can get a barbecue lunch at West Seattle Thriftway, kitty corner from the festival zone, till 4 pm, benefiting the Morgan Community Association!

12:49 PM: Back to the festival focus after a brief bit of breaking news (diver rescue call that turned out OK – diver wasn’t missing or in trouble, after all). Good news – we have something new at the booth, courtesy of the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce – free I *HEART* West Seattle bumper stickers! While they last! Here they are on our table, next to the makeshift World Cup scoreboard:

Also Water Taxi brochures and city Neighborhood Center info. We’re right behind Feedback Lounge, between Animals First Foundation and Pacific Rim Emergency Planning.

2:05 PM: Shoutout to more of our neighbors here in the exhibit area – longtime WSB sponsor Ventana Construction is right across the way – here’s Ventana’s Anne with kids Delila and Logan:

We’ve also seen some candidates – Marcee Stone and Joe Fitzgibbon, both candidates for the 34th District State House Position 1 have been sighted. (P.S. Later in the afternoon, another candidate in that race, Mike Heavey, visited the festival too, as we noted at the time via Twitter.) We’ll be starting a new report shortly – have video of belly dancing and music too!

Happening now: Day 1 for the new West Seattle Tool Library

 |   Sustainable West Seattle | West Seattle news

Jennifer and Lacy were the first two renters for the brand-new West Seattle Tool Library, which opened its doors at 9 this morning on the north side of the South Seattle Community College campus. They’re borrowing tools to help build a chicken run. You are welcome to visit the Tool Library (bring 2 forms of ID to rent something) before 2 pm today – you’ll meet friendly folks like Sustainable West Seattle‘s Patrick and Gary:

They’re also planning a brief dedication ceremony around 12:30 pm, if you’d like to be on hand for that. You’re also still welcome to bring tools to donate – as long as they’re in good working condition, and not gas-powered. P.S. You can browse the Tool Library inventory online by going here. (While you’re at SSCC, note that the Northwest Wine Academy‘s summer release event continues noon-4 pm today, just steps from the Tool Library – it’s a twofer!) ADDED SATURDAY NIGHT: One more photo:

We checked back at the Tool Library in early afternoon – just missed the dedication ceremony because we got sidetracked to check out the big Harbor Avenue rescue response, but we did catch this crowd of browsers.

Happening now: Planting day at Junction Plaza Park

From Friends of Junction Plaza Park, that’s Junction Neighborhood Organization president Erica Karlovits and West Seattle Junction Association executive director Susan Melrose. You might dub them the godmothers of Junction Plaza Park. They didn’t start the project – but they led the push to raise the money to finish it (here’s where things stood a year ago), more than five years after the city bought the site at 42nd/Alaska. They’re there today to preside over the volunteer planting party:

They’re working today in two shifts – morning and afternoon – to get about 1,000 native plants (purchased from the money raised for the project) into the ground. The construction of the park itself is almost done – the pavers just went in, and it turns out these are not your average bricks:

As JPP’s landscape architect Karen Kiest explained to us – she’s there today too – these are “pervious clay pavers” – water can soak through. Not easy to find, she said, but they managed to find a source in South Carolina. The pavers make up one “oval” of the park, while grass makes up the other, and there is a circular “performance area” on its north side.

The Junction Plaza Park dedication is 5:30 pm June 29, and everybody’s welcome.

Sunny West Seattle Saturday: Pitch in – then hang out!

|    Comments Off on Sunny West Seattle Saturday: Pitch in – then hang out!
 |   Fun stuff to do | How to help | West Seattle news

Welcome to what promises to be a spectacular sunny Saturday – so far this year, we’re 3 for 3 on sunshine for festival Saturdays (Westwood Village, ReFRESH Southwest, and now Morgan Junction) – but today ALSO offers a unique chance to pitch in with volunteer efforts before hanging out in Morgan (and/or elsewhere). The West Seattle Weekend Lineup page has the full rundown on events including:

*Junction Plaza Park planting party, 8:30 am – about 1,000 native plants going in at the almost-complete park
*Westcrest Off-Leash Area bag dispensers and brush removal, 9 am – show up and help the West Seattle Kiwanis at our area’s only official off-leash park
*West Seattle Tool Library grand opening, 9 am – you can borrow tools (bring 2 forms of ID) and donate them too, north end of South Seattle Community College
*Rally Around the Alley, 10 am – North Delridge neighbors welcome your help in the alley behind the Delridge Library

You also have the chance to do some good at:
*Westwood Village blood drive, 9 am
*Alex’s Lemonade Stand fundraising lemonade and yard sale, 9 am
*Chief Sealth cheerleaders’ car wash, 10 am-4 pm at 5242 California SW (late add)
*Pawty with a Purpose for author Val Mallinson, 6:30 pm
*Community School of West Seattle auction, 6:30 pm

As for the fun stuff: Morgan Junction Community Festival starts at 11 am, with events in Morgan Junction Park (map) and behind the neighboring Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor)/Zeeks Pizza building. Music and other entertainment plus family activities are in the park; the Bite of Morgan free tastes from local restaurants are at multiple area locations (but you need to get the free coupon book at the festival); booths with local groups and businesses (including us – we’re a co-sponsor, too) are behind Feedback/Zeeks. We will be reporting “live” all day so check back here for highlights once things get going.

Complete locations/times for all of the above and MUCH more, in the West Seattle Weekend Lineup.

New candidates in County Council, State House Position 1 races

Friday was the final day for candidates to file to run in the August 17th primary, and the online lists – which we have reason to believe aren’t final yet – show two local races with candidates who hadn’t surfaced earlier: In the County Council District 8 race (the job to which Jan Drago was appointed to but isn’t running for), checkbox.jpgjoining State Sen. Joe McDermott of West Seattle, Normandy Park City Councilmember Shawn McEvoy, and political newcomer Diana Toledo of West Seattle, we see Tim Fahey of South Park, whose campaign focus – via the Web and Facebook – appears to be on the soon-to-close SP Bridge. In the State Legislature races, Rep. Sharon Nelson remains unopposed for State Senate; the State House Position 2 job she’s giving up has drawn the previously announced candidates – Joe Fitzgibbon of Burien, Mike Heavey of West Seattle, Marcee Stone of West Seattle are on the online list; Geoffrey “Mac” McElroy, also of West Seattle, isn’t, but he says he filed Friday afternoon, so we’ll assume the online list has some lags. But there is one extra entrant, in Rep. Eileen Cody‘s State House Position 1 race; Ray Carter of West Seattle filed on Friday afternoon. He doesn’t appear to have a website, so we don’t know much about him yet, except that he declared his party preference as “Prefers Reluctantly GOP Party.” That makes him the only person mentioned in this story to have declared with GOP or Republican; the County Council race is nonpartisan, so no declarations there, but in the other state races, everyone has declared a Democratic preference except McElroy, who has said he’d run as an independent (since he’s not showing on the state page yet, we don’t know how it will show). In all races, the top two votegetters in August will move on to Nov. 2.

ADDED 10:43 AM: In comments and via e-mail, it’s pointed out that the county candidate-filing list page is showing McElroy’s registration, even though the state page hasn’t caught up yet. And indeed, “prefers independent party” is the designation. We also have heard from newly filed State House candidate Ray Carter, who e-mailed us an explanation of his “reluctantly GOP” preference and his campaign – click ahead to read:Read More

Graduation night for Seattle Lutheran High School’s Class of 2010

 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle schools

West Seattle’s hottest ticket tonight wasn’t for a play or concert … instead, the gym-jamming capacity crowd of nearly 700 was there to cheer the stars of a once-in-a-lifetime show: The 49 members of the Seattle Lutheran High School Class of 2010:

Outside, awaiting the school’s 30th annual graduation ceremony, some seniors were exuberant … others, perhaps a bit nervous … but once inside, with parents, grandparents, other family, friends, etc., it was serious business:

According to the program, the class address was given by valedictorian Elyssa Watford and salutatorian Kelsey Shaw; student-body president Mindon Win delivered the welcome and invocation, while senior-class president Gabrielle Little gave the closing prayer. Also from the program, the class’s scripture (II Timothy 4:7): “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.”

West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School graduations are next week – CSIHS Tuesday, WSHS Wednesday, both at 5 pm at Seattle Center‘s Memorial Stadium.

Along the Duwamish: Lafarge ‘Safety Day’; “Eco-industrial” idea

Two notes from and about the Duwamish River industrial corridor tonight:

First – we dropped by the Lafarge of North America cement plant in eastern West Seattle this morning after getting word of its “Safety Day” expo. Workers browsed exhibits discussing safety advice and protective equipment. Several local businesses were there to talk about safety and health, too.

Second – expect to hear more about this next week, but we thought you’d be interested in the media advisory from City Council President Richard Conlin‘s office:

Seattle – The Seattle City Council will be briefed on a new eco-industrial district concept for industrial lands and the Duwamish River corridor.

WHO: Office of Economic Development, Environmental Coalition of South Seattle, Full council, and Andreas Koenig, EcoIndustry
WHEN: Monday, June 14, 2010, 9:30 a.m.
WHERE: Seattle City Hall Council Chambers, 2nd floor

The Seattle industrial district along the Duwamish River valley and surrounding neighborhoods is one of the largest contiguous industrial areas in the U.S. With approximately 4,000 companies and 70,000 employees and its proximity to multimodal transportation options, this area continues to be a vital economic driver for our region.

The eco-industrial district concept helps industrial sectors and the neighborhoods in which they reside truly coexist, by preparing for future challenges, establishing sustainable development practices, allowing for efficiencies between companies and optimizing business performance and collaboration.

In addition to the full council briefing, Koenig will be part of a more detailed briefing before the Regional Development and Sustainability Committee on June 15, at 2:00 p.m. in Council Chambers.

After getting that advisory, we asked a followup – any geographical boundaries yet for this potential “eco-industrial district”? Rob Gala from the Conlin staff says, in short, no – so far, it’s just an idea, but they would love to hear what you think of it. We’ll have more on it next week, and you’ll also be able to watch these briefings via Seattle Channel if you can’t make it to City Hall.

West Seattle scenes: Art, jewelry and music at Illusions Hair Design

They’re known best for the art of hairstyling – but tonight, Illusions Hair Design (longtime WSB sponsor) branched out, staying open a few hours extra to show and sell creations — including paintings and jewelry — from the Circle of Friends for Mental Health. Among those welcoming guests was Illusions proprietor Sue Lindblom, whose salon is celebrating its anniversary this month:

Circle of Friends offers classes in visual arts, music and writing to those dealing with mental illness – a category that the group says can include more than a fourth of all American adults in any given year. Visitors to Illusions tonight not only got to browse and view, they also were treated to live music:

The duo goes by Julia and Jack. Find out more about Circle of Friends by going here.

Traffic alert reminder and explanation: 1st/Spokane intersection

As noted here about 24 hours ago, SDOT plans to close the 1st Avenue South/South Spokane Street intersection at 8:30 tonight, continuing till about 6 am Monday. But the eastbound West Seattle Bridge offramp remains open. So a few have asked – how’s that going to work? We asked SDOT, whose LeAnne Nelson replied:

The intersection will be blocked off and closed to all northbound and southbound through traffic, with drivers south of the intersection directed from 1st Ave S to Dawson to 4th Ave S. Drivers north of the intersection will be directed to Lander St and then to 4th Ave S. Five police officers will be on site to help guide traffic. Drivers from West Seattle will still be able to turn left off the ramp to go north to downtown on a lane dedicated to that traffic.

Hope that helps, in case you were wondering.

West Seattle Weekend Lineup: More than 60 options!

60+ options, for a weekend promising 70-degree temperatures! Never fear – they’re planning to stream it live. Courtesy of SLHS’s Bil Hood, here’s the link. 7:30 pm is the scheduled start time.

West Seattle Crime Watch: ‘Home invasion robbery’ this morning

Seattle Police have now released more information on an incident that several people asked about this morning – we’d called earlier and all they told us at the time was that the incident that left police tape up at 15th/Henderson was “a robbery” – so we shared that info in a WSB Forums thread while working to find out more. Here’s what’s just gone up at SPD Blotter:

On June 11th at approximately 4:45 a.m., officers responded to a home invasion robbery in the 1500 block of SW Henderson St. The victims stated that they were awakened by loud noises and suspects storming into their bedrooms.

The suspects were armed with a knife and wearing masks and gloves. The suspects jumped on top of the victim’s beds demanding to know where the money, drugs, and jewelry was. The suspects took $3,500 and a projector from the victims.

The suspects spoke both English and Spanish. They gained entry by forcibly kicking in the front door and both bedroom doors. Seattle Fire responded and treated the two male victims. Neither victim was transported. The Robbery Unit responded and processed the scene and interviewed the victims. The suspects are at large.

Berry orders begin for Rotary Club of West Seattle

Strawberries are first up this year for the Rotary Club of West Seattle‘s annual berry sale, and orders are being taken right now – they should be delivered in time for pickup in just two weeks, June 25 and 26, on the south side of Admiral Safeway. You can order online at the Rotary website, or call 206-779-5301; raspberries and blueberries will follow in July. (Also note that the Rotary website also has forms for the Kiddies’ Parade it sponsors before the West Seattle Grand Parade every year – parade day this year is July 24th.)

West Seattle schools: All 3 top administrators leaving WSHS

Exactly one month after we first reported the resignation of West Seattle High School principal Bruce Bivins, who’s taking a job in California, we have just confirmed multiple reports that both WSHS assistant principals are leaving as well. Jenni Maughan-MacDonald wrote about her plans on her What’s Happening at Westside website – she says she’s taking a “small school principal position” in Seattle’s neighbor district to the south, Highline Public Schools. And district spokesperson Teresa Wippel confirms that the other assistant principal, Anitra Pinchback-Jones, has resigned. So what now, we asked? She replied, “We have a pool of applicants for all positions and will be updating the community next week on our process.”

 |   Genesee Hill | Transportation | West Seattle news

An update from SDOT‘s Marybeth Turner on the SW Genesee paving plan between 47th and 49th SW: She says they’re now looking at next Tuesday, “weather permitting,” and the work will probably take all day. SDOT says traffic will be able to get through during the work.

More development news: The Kenney sells some land

As first reported here in April, the redevelopment plan for The Kenney is undergoing some revision – changing into “something smaller,” as T.J. Lehman of West Seattle-based Euclid Development told the Morgan Community Association at their last quarterly meeting. As part of the changes, The Kenney has just sold some land. CEO Kevin McFeely confirmed to WSB not only that they’re selling 7022 46th Avenue SW (the quarter-acre parcel across SW Myrtle from The Kenney’s NE corner; the site holds an old house and was listed for just under half a million dollars), but that the deal is closing today. He explains that “the property no longer fits into our plans” because of the “retooling” of the redevelopment project. McFeely says he expects to be able to reveal more specifics on the downsized project by the end of next month. (Our 2-year archive of stories on The Kenney’s project can be browsed here.)

One less eyesore? New owner for stalled building at 35th/Avalon

The stalled development on the southeast corner of 35th/Avalon will get going again, according to a report in today’s Daily Journal of Commerce. The DJC says “an entity” of Bellevue-based Longwell Company has paid $4 million cash for it. That’s all we know so far — all but the first paragraph of the DJC story is behind a paywall — but we’ll be gathering more information to add as we get it. The project stalled after its original owner, Michael Mastro, was forced into Chapter 7 last year. The DPD permit history for the site is here. 1:10 PM: Thanks to those who’ve sent the rest of the DJC story. While we cannot and would not cut and paste copyrighted material, we’ll note that they also report Longwell says the building will be apartments for the foreseeable future, with rents starting around $1,000, because they’ll have “high-end finishes.” The article also has an interesting tidbit, citing West Seattle’s apartment-vacancy rate at 5.4 percent.

West Seattle Art Walk scenes: Library; live music; bakeries …

The monthly West Seattle Art Walk is more than a night for admiring art. At Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in North Delridge last night, it was also an occasion for borrowing it, as the Art Lending Library opened for the night. It’s been a year since the ALL made its debut – in this June 2009 story, artist Seth Damm explained it on video, and last night he was busy explaining it to prospective borrowers:

The Art Walk is also often a night for music. At wine shop Bin 41 (WSB sponsor) in The Junction, along with watercolors by Lee Copeland, we found Red Dog:

They played Appalachian music, while the Bin 41 team poured wine from South Africa:

Also in The Junction, another WSB sponsor, Mural Apartments, also featured live music – here’s video of the Velveteen Lotharios:

(Video by Patrick Sand)
In keeping with the building’s name, Mural’s lobby is meant as gallery space – you can even see art through the windows as you walk by on 42nd SW. Heading back west through The Junction, at CAPERS, featured artist Jennifer Ament has chosen to help wildlife through her imagery of it:

CAPERS’ Lisa Myers explains that Jennifer “is donating 20% of her art sales to the National Wildlife Federation for sealife rescue in the Gulf [of Mexico] through June 24th. … She has just released a heron, nautilus, sea fan and whale as part of her growing collection of linoleum cut prints.”

Door-to-door alert – for a GOOD reason: Windermere food drive

Early warning: About 3,000 homes in West Seattle will get something special on their doorsteps next week, and it’s something that local Windermere Real Estate agents hope you will use. Next Wednesday (6/16), they will distribute bags for a food-donation drive that’s part of their annual Community Service Day; then next Friday (6/18), they will return to the 3,000 or so homes where they left bags, hoping to find them filled with nonperishable food for the West Seattle Food Bank and White Center Food Bank. If you get one of the bags on your doorstep – point person Doug Baldwin says the volunteers will be hitting various neighborhoods – here’s the flyer you’ll find with it.

1st official meeting for Genesee-Schmitz Neighborhood Council

With the future of the now-vacant ex-Genesee Hill Elementary School building one of their area’s hottest topics, the new Genesee-Schmitz Neighborhood Council had Seattle School Board rep Steve Sundquist on its first-ever general-meeting agenda. By the time he spoke, about 50 people were at the meeting, held at West Side Presbyterian Church. And before it ended, the group had elected its first official slate of officers.
