WS Crime Watch: What the Junction police response was for

(photo by Tyler, substituted at 6:47 pm for our original cameraphone photo)
In case you saw the big police response right at Walk All Ways in The Junction a little while ago – we’ve gotten a couple inquiries – here’s what police say happened: Someone “inebriated” randomly decided to lash out at one or more innocent bystanders. The “inebriated” person was subdued, and arrested. Police told us everybody’s otherwise OK. 7:39 PM UPDATE: Thanks to Lachlan for pointing us, in the comment section, to this tweet from Easy Street‘s owner, saying the suspect was kicking a dog. FRIDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE: After a commenter wrote that someone else was arrested at the scene, we checked with the Southwest Precinct to see if any more information was available today about the circumstances. Lt. Norm James‘ summary:

Call came in about 5:45 regarding an intoxicated male pushing people at California and Alaska. Turns out an intoxicated male confronted two male victims then kicked a dog that was passing by. The intoxicated male pushed one of the two victims and chest bumped the other. Both victims were fearful of the intoxicated suspect. Officers arrived and took the suspect into custody and placed him in the back of the patrol car. The suspect began trying to kick out the windows of the patrol car and subsequently there was a taser application on the suspect to control him. The fire department aid was called to extract the taser barbs (which is standard procedure). The suspect was then booked into KC Jail.

Sorry about this. I gotta stay out of West 5. I do love the mai tais …

  • rick April 8, 2010 (7:24 pm)

I have seen over the past several weeks, TOO many “inebriated” people on the south side of Easy Street…all day long?

  • Mr. Matt April 8, 2010 (7:27 pm)

Great, thanks Bob… Now you’ve got me thinking about Mai Tais mmmmmmm.

  • Lachlan April 8, 2010 (7:32 pm)

Don’t know about this, but the alleged owner of Easy Street is on Twitter and he said the drunk person kicked or stomped a woman’s dog. Craziness. Hope everyone is ok.

Thanks, I’ll look for the tweet. All we can do is report what police told us if it’s something we didn’t somehow happen to witness, but then more information tends to emerge later from witness reports … TR

nothing better than a mean drunk in the middle of the afternoon…wow…

  • Lachlan April 8, 2010 (7:44 pm)

I know, TR. Just wanted to add a little bit to the narrative. I appreciate you reporting what you know, and not what you suspect/hear by the wayside, etc. :)

Thank god he didn’t plow his car into a building or we would have instant helli news!

  • Eddie April 8, 2010 (7:48 pm)

Dude was seriously aggresive toward the police that had him in custody on the ground. Must have been 8 or 9 police cars. They had the “spit hood” on him and had him trussed up pretty good. Once they brought him off the ground and over toward the bus bench he was again fighting and slamming himself up against the wall. Took at least 4 officers to carry him to whatever conveyance took him to this evening’s resting place.

Later on, up the street, little kids were swinging a broomhandle at a Bacon Pinata – outside of the Salon/Spa at Cali and Genessee.

Mmmmm, Bacon. All is good in the world.

Kicked a dog? Lets hope he gets some “special” treatment in lockup !!

  • Ms Evelyn April 8, 2010 (8:06 pm)

Actually noticed this guy just before all of this must have gone on. He looked like he was going to be trouble. Sorry that it was such an innocent bystander, the dog, that got assaulted.

  • DC April 8, 2010 (8:22 pm)

What a jerk. Hope the dog is ok

  • BadwolfZanda April 8, 2010 (8:23 pm)

Oh dear! Must have been one of those rowdy Art Walk types!

  • dosafyre April 8, 2010 (9:03 pm)

Seems like the last week I’ve seen more and more “inebriated” folks along the Alaska bus line route…in broad daylight. Hope it’s not a trend :(

  • AnotherIdiotInWS April 8, 2010 (9:53 pm)

Oh, it’s gotta be a trend. They are everywhere!
    .
Get outside and get a life, and stop over-reacting.

I’ve never heard of a, “spit hood”. It’ll be my new word of the day. I wish the pooch a speedy recovery!

  • Travis_Bickle April 9, 2010 (6:27 am)

Good thing he wasn’t high on marijuana!

  • Jill Loblaw April 9, 2010 (7:40 am)

Too bad the dog didn’t get a bite in.

I spoke to one of the Real Change guys last night after this happened. He said that the guy was extremely drunk and harassing him and other bystanders. He apparently kicked the window at Easy Street, and then went after the dog. The Real Change guy (maybe five feet tall, with braids) punched him and knocked him out. When the police finally showed up, the guy allegedly spit in a female police officer’s mouth and then urinated on several other officers. They then tased him and trussed him up. Glad to hear it wasn’t a pedestrian hit by a car, which is what it looked like, and people should say thank you to the Real Change guy for helping to keep West Seattle safe. He, unfortunately, is being charged with assault, but hopefully nothing will come of that.

  • AJ April 9, 2010 (1:42 pm)

If someone will give me information about the real change guy, I will happily contribute money to his defense or general well being. All of West Seattle should contribute to help this guy out for protecting the dog and property, be it Next to Nature, Pet Elements, Petco or Mud Bay. I don’t advocate decking anyone, unless it is in defense of a those that need it (the dog)

If he was high on MJ, he would have gone across the street, bought/ate a cupcake, said dude 3 or 4 times and gone home to play XBOX 360.

    No harm, no foul…

You should be able to knock-out a menacing lunatic without jeopardizing yourself with the criminal justice system.

    • WSB April 9, 2010 (2:40 pm)

Before this one goes TOO far, for what it’s worth, I have an inquiry out to police to see if we are able to access the report of the incident ASAP. The only person we knew of last night who was under arrest was the “inebriated” guy, but on the other hand, we got a fairly brief briefing at the scene, so I am not casting any doubt on this report, just saying that we are trying to find out the facts on how many people were arrested and why police say they made that/those arrest(s) – TR

  • wolfbain April 9, 2010 (3:01 pm)

I hope I see the real change guy today in the junction so I can thank him and buy one of his papers. He knew he was in danger so he “bipt” the s.o.b. I trust the courts will be fair to him. He defended the public and now he needs a public defender. I hope the public defenders office assigns R.J. to his case. He,s the best lawyer no money can buy.

    • WSB April 9, 2010 (3:42 pm)

According to Lt. Norm James at the precinct, who has just spoken with one of the officers who handled the case, there WAS NO SECOND ARREST. The only person arrested, says Lt. James, was the guy who, in a nutshell, freaked out. I will add this more detailed police account to the main story – TR

  • Veda April 9, 2010 (5:20 pm)

This comment is for AJ. I’m afraid I don’t know the Real Change guy’s name, but I see him quite a bit. About 5 feet, braids in his hair, cap, African American (I think), and always smiling and complimenting people. He was right by Easy Street around 7pm, not sure if it’s his regular shift. You’ll know him if you see him. Good guy.

All I know is that he showed me his Police Dept. report # marked with the word “assault” and that he’s got to go talk to them. My guess is that they won’t try to prosecute, but you never know. I only have his account to go off of, and only saw the aftermath.

  • BadwolfZanda April 9, 2010 (7:56 pm)

I believe the Real Change guy’s name is Aaron.

  • rs261 April 20, 2010 (7:45 pm)

    His name is Aaron Lee.

Sorry, comment time is over.
