Update: Pre-Thanksgiving help for the hungry

As mentioned earlier this morning, it’s a great day to help make sure nobody’s going hungry this Thanksgiving. For the Eastridge Christian Assembly turkey-and-groceries giveaway this morning, the line before it started at 9 stretched about two blocks down 38th north of Fauntleroy. At the head of the line, more than 30 volunteers were getting ready to hand out about 500 turkeys:

Eastridge pastor Josh Crandall told us he’d talked to some of the people in line and found out that some had come from miles around.

The church buys the food with money donated by its members – in addition to this giveaway, they were doing the same thing this morning at their Eastside campus. Meantime, we mentioned earlier that the White Center Food Bank has someone on hand all day for last-minute donations including turkeys – we dropped in and found Mike and Audrey there to help:

They’re expecting to have people at WC Food Bank till about 5 but it’s a good idea to call ahead. We’ll update local food banks’ status and hours on Monday, too; here’s our most recent update from the West Seattle Food Bank (for which you can donate nonperishables by stopping by West Seattle Bowl during tonight’s Turkey Bowl, after 6 pm).

A note to those who want to give the bird to the White Center Food Bank — QFC is selling 16lb+ turkeys for 29 cents/pound if you buy $25 of groceries, and even better, they will let you buy two rather than one like at Safeway.
    .
I can easily spend $25 on grocery items, and so I picked up two 18 lb monster birds for the White Center Food Bank, and encourage those who can to do so also.

Bummer, we went to Safeway and didn’t know about the 1 limit till we were checking out. Well, it’s not too late to donate (that sounds like a motto)! Thanks for the tip! I don’t know the WS Food Bank’s turkey status (have been waiting for a reply but might see some folks from there at tonight’s Turkey Bowl) but will update when we get it, especially if they’re still taking them Monday/Tuesday etc. – TR

The food banks never seem to get enough turkeys doanted during the holidays and end up buying some themselves to meet the need. AND….with the increased numbers of clients there is no way to really predict how many will be needed. Thanks to everyone that is helping the food banks meet the needs of our less fortuante neighbors not only during this holiday season but all through this tough year.

Sorry, comment time is over.
