Another bicycle accident, same spot on Delridge

We received a text and this photo a short time ago (thank you!) about another bicycle accident at almost exactly the same spot on Delridge, south of Holden (map). This one apparently involved only the bicyclist, according to Seattle Fire Department spokesperson Dana Vander Houwen (whom we called because there were no police at the scene, and the fire truck left as we were arriving, barely 15 minutes after the 911 dispatch). We saw the victim taken off in a private ambulance, also as we were arriving, which usually means not-major injuries, and the road is clear now, so this seems to have been fairly minor, but we’re mentioning it because what happened two mornings ago (which police still have not solved, according to our check with them late yesterday) is still fresh. By the way, we heard back last night from Amy, a friend of the bicyclist hurt on Tuesday, and she says her friend is “still (in) icu and she’s very broken to say the least, she had to have surgery this morning and will have to have a few more. She is still here though thankfully. but mostly right now she and her husband and extended family just need a whole bunch of prayers.”

That patch of road is HORRENDOUS with cracks and potholes and bumps. All it takes is a small rock bouncing up to stop a tire dead in its tracks and throw a cyclist. Delridge desperately needs resurfacing. The terrible road condition is clear from the photo above, even.

Not sure if the road condition had anything to do with this event, but as pointed out above the condition of this street is ridiculous. And there are numerous bad road spots all over this city, but for some reason the media seem to un-interested in the the fact that this basic service in a modern american city is not being met. And don’t cry money problems, SDOT is doing well financially, they just choose to spend money doing pet projects that do not help the bul of the population.

It is reasons like this that we will have a new mayor, and he has the gall to call himself the pothole mayor. The road conditions under his tenure are the worst ever. And his inability to get rid of bad managers is inept at best, (SDOT and Fire CHief).

Exactly! Right in the forefront of that photo is the very reason I ride the sidewalk there. Which is legal and I yield to peds and I am very cautious at driveways and intersections.

Being a bicyclist in this part of West Seattle I can attest to the absolute horrible condition of this road. The verticle fissures and numerous potholes are impossible to navigate safely…and riding on the sidewalk presents it’s own safety issues. SDOT and the mayor need to be taking to task on this!

Everyone report it now especially if you use it regularly!

While you’re at it, map your bike accidents too.

Someone should’ve sent his Pothole Rangers out in force before it was too late to win in the primary.

that’s why Greg Nickels is losing the election. too many worries about plastic bags, not enough worries about paving the streets.

Sorry, comment time is over.
