Meet the newest candidate for Seattle mayor: Michael McGinn

That’s the introduction video posted today by the newly announced mayoral campaign of North Seattle resident Michael McGinn. Here’s his official site; he’s not on the official city filing list yet (though it hasn’t been updated online since last week) – three campaigns are listed there so far: the incumbent, Norman Sigler, and the potential campaign of James Donaldson, who has said he’ll make his yes-or-no announcement this week.

Honestly, I have a better chance of being sucked into an alien spacecraft and whisked away to planet XJ-9 than I do of seeing a GOPer run for mayor and have a shot at winning in this town. I look forward to meeting my new insect overlord.

I’m putting my cat on the ballot. Even she could do a better job than Nickels.

Michael is thoughtful and reasonable, and he is effective at working with citizens and building coalitions to get things done. If it weren’t for him, last fall’s Seattle Parks and Green Spaces measure would never have been on the ballot, and our neighborhood green spaces would have suffered from neglect and inadequate investment. Among other things, the package will fund the West Seattle reservoir park, new West Seattle P-Patches, the West Duwamish Greenbelt, and improvements in West Seattle Junction Hub Urban Village.

As someone who has worked for and cares deeply about public education, I find it refreshing to hear someone in City politics talk about education. I’m not sure I agree that the City should take over the Seattle Public Schools. We are NOT in a crisis state (no more than any other public entity staring down the budget problem). But I do see his point that parents and the general public feel that no one is truly accountable for the state of our public schools. He’s right. Superintendents come and go, get kicked out or skip out but no one is really accountable. We don’t pay our Board enough to ask them to be accountable and they don’t really have the power to make huge change happen.

    I’d have to learn more.

  • what are his qualifications March 24, 2009 (5:18 pm)

None of his information or websites list any qualifications to run a large city government or organization. If he is serious he needs to post the relevant information so we can consider him as a viable candidate.

Nickels has overstayed his welcome. There is no way he should be elected to a 3rd term. Seattle needs an innovator and a leader with a sustainable vision. McGinn is that leader.

McGinn has the vision to make Seattle one of the most sustainable cities in the world. Nickels talked the talk but never walked the walk. I notice a lot of anti environmentalist type posts on the blogs related to this article. Its to bad that people cant recognize that sustainability is the future…if you want one.

Seattle needs an innovator and a leader with a sustainable vision. McGinn is that leader.

Three bullet points constitute his ‘vision’. Three. And sorry to break it to you, but for most folks sustainability ain’t at the top of the ol’ priority list. It has zip to do with being anti environmentalist, sport.

Just watched you on Upfront. Are you serious? First off, Dude, you’re not trying out for a shot on “House, MD”…Shave, for God’s sake. (If you want to let yourself go AFTER the election, fine. After all, look at Emporer Five Pennies.) Secondly, even if you think it might destroy your laid-back image, put on nice suit with a CLEAN white shirt and yes, even a tie whenever you plan to appear on TV promoting yourself as a SERIOUS candidate. Sheesh, no wonder Five Pennies is still in office!

Sorry, comment time is over.
