Seattle Weekly “Best Of” 2008: And the winners are …

Seattle Weekly just posted its “Best of 2008” winners’ list, with some West Seattle representation: In the readers’ poll, Buddha Ruksa was voted “best Thai restaurant,” Husky Deli was voted “best takeout deli food,” Cupcake Royale (which of course has branches outside WS too) got “best cupcakes,” and we thank you for voting WSB “best neighborhood blog” – the Weekly kindly included the description, “keeping us astoundingly well-informed on goings-on across the bridge.” You can read the entire Best of 2008 readers’-poll list here. In addition to the reader votes, the Weekly also profiled its staff “best of” picks; Spring Hill is “best new restaurant“; Rocksport is lauded as “best unvarnished sports bar”; Redline Music and Sports is written up here as “best way to keep your Cougar pride in Seattle,” Kitty Harbor is profiled here as “best place to melt your heart,” and WSB also got a bonus shoutout in this section, courtesy of Weekly managing editor Mike Seely, who lives on this side of the bay. You can browse all the writeups from this “Best Of” start page; there are a TON of categories and we just read through as quickly as we could but have to leave the computer for a while – let us know if you see a West Seattle winner we missed and we’ll add it here later.

Absolutely…and Mike Seely cracks me up :)

The recognition is well-deserved!! Mike Seely’s observation is not far off – didn’t we have a parrot-story on WSB?

I actually have another one in the inbox … that’s been missing a while. I am behind on pet postings today. But we’ve had some pet reunions lately so it’s been heartening to keep that section going!

obviously they haven’t had any cupcakes from “Coffee to a Tea”.

Apparently the music editor (Brian Barr) from the Seattle Weekly just moved to West Seattle as well. Hopefully we’ll get more representation! This is so exciting, West Seattle Hardcore.

Cupcake Royale?? All I can say is better get an extra large coffee or milk with that cupcake… They’re dry, dry, dry!

Damn. Coffee to a Tea was robbed.

TR – Told ya’ so! Told ya’ so!

And, yeah, Coffee to a Tea rules.

You know, i’ve never had a dry cupcake or a bad experience with the WS Cupcake Royale. Nor Coffee to a Tea, for that matter. I don’t eat messes of cupcakes or anything, but they’ve been most good in both cases.

As for the Husky Deli, was there any doubt? I took the bus down from up north on Saturday just to get a sandwich. When i informed a friend of my plans when she called, she came down from the Hill to eat with me. It’s just that good.

    No doubt on WSB, obviously!

Not too hard to understand why Coffee to a Tea was robbed. The “Best of” was for the whole city, and while CTAT could’ve/should’ve won best cupcake I doubt many people in “East Seattle” have heard of them. Cupcake Royale has multiple locations and thus multiple votes. I’m just sayin’…

Coffee to a Tea’s cupcakes are pretty great. They sell them at the Chocolate Box downtown. But I think Cupcake Royale’s are quite good too. It’s a matter of personal taste. But whoever said one shop could never compete with a small chain is right, of course.

I’m so glad that Spring Hill was recognized! I know it’s not cheap, but that is such a truly wonderful, innovative restaurant. Along with Beato, W. Seattle now has 2 truly ‘world class’ restaurants. Exciting!

Jim, you are absolutely right. I just can’t imagine, after having several from cupcake royale that the rest of the city is that devoid of taste. Or else they all have really big glasses of milk :)

Congratulations West Seattle Blog! I voted for you!

By the way, for Coffee to a … fans, their cupcakes are featured at the concessions on Movies on the Wall nights. Next one, this Saturday night, “Finding Nemo.” If that’s not your cup of, er, tea, a week from Saturday it’s “Ghostbusters” on 8/16, followed by the season finale on 8/23, “Galaxy Quest.”

CUPCAKE ROYALE????? Best cupcake!!????? WHAT??? I have to agree that Coffee to a tea was robbed big time. Cupcake royale tries to hide their dry tasteless cupcakes under a glob of sugary tasteless frosting. Cupcakes from safeway have more moisture and taste than cupcake royale.
    Goodness sake!!!

Blah blah, cupcake royale, coffee to a tea… don’t you people know the best cupcakes are in Wallingford!!! Three words- toasted smore cupcakes.

  • Chris August 7, 2008 (8:31 am)

What about Sugar Rush? Love those mini cakes. Glad to see SHOOFLY was recognized for those superb pot pies (great to pick up on the way home from work for a quick pop-in-the-oven dinner).

Mostly, congratulations to WEST SEATTLE BLOG. I think the word astounding is appropriate in the description. You have no idea how much you are appreciated!

  • sassy August 7, 2008 (9:47 am)

Are you kidding me with Cupcake Royale?
Can you say dry & stale?

Not to mention the oh so friendly staff!

  • Eric B August 8, 2008 (11:46 pm)

I was just reading through the Weekly and noticed that Don Bogie at Maharaja in the Junction got named best bartender. Amazing given the number of candidates!

  • WSB August 9, 2008 (12:20 am)

Oh phooey, I forgot to add that to the story. Glad you mentioned it. Mike S from the Weekly e-mailed me about half an hour after I put this story up and in the ensuing exchange he mentioned that was another West Seattle “winner.”

Sorry, comment time is over.
