Two “developments” at 4415 Fauntleroy, home to Tervo’s

Heading east on Fauntleroy this morning, we noticed that sign on Tervo’s Mini-Mart, 4415 Fauntleroy (map), heralding new ownership, remodeling, and a “grand opening” next month. We’ve reported on this site a few times in the past few months — the death of its owner last September, and the property going up for sale in November. So far, no indication on the Liquor Control Board or city business-license sites who the new owner is, nor do King County records show a closed sale on the site (here’s the listing). HOWEVER — just checked the city files for the address, and there’s even bigger news — aside from the impending “grand (re)opening,” there appears to be a development proposal for the site, summarized online in the construction and land-use permit applications as: “Demolish existing commercial structure and construct new mixed-use building. Proposal to include retail space, 90 residential units, and associated subterranean parking.” Looks like time to update the Junction-area development/real-estate map – will work on that later today!

It’s a change that’s for sure. West Seattle changing from mini-marts with bars on all the windows and doors, to a Whole Foods with 5 floors of condos.

The only constant in the universe is change.

Won’t be sorry to see this one go.

I remember kids being able to buy alcohol underage there when I was in high school, good times. THUNDERBIRD WINE, good one, Jen! HA!

Let’s hope that the new owner removes the unecessary white cage wrapping around the front. That was such a statement about the paranoid state of the mentally ill man who owned the place. So sad.

DALYDBL, you don’t know a thing about him. Tervos was broken in to MANY times in just the last year. they needed the “white cage” as you call it to- oh, I don’t know- KEEP OUT CRACKHEADS trying to destroy someone’s business. He also got closed circuit cameras- is that “paranoid” or is that someone trying to be proactive? The owner and his wife were the nicest people and they were just trying to get by and provide for their two daughters. you don’t have any idea on his mental state- all you know is that he committed suicide. tragic, yes. More tragic is people who don’t have any idea what they are talking about trying to sway public opinion for god knows what reason. go back under the bridge, you complete and utter jerk!

The Tervo Family sold the business in 1983. Mrs.T passed away in 1996 and Mr. T in 2006. Yup.. they had the largest wine and beer selection in WS not to mention the nasty magazines behind the counter but as far as buying booze there under age….. Not if the old man was behind the counter. You had 1 1/2 minutes at the candy counter to make your selection and get the heck out of the store or he would make your selection for you and never even drop an ash off the end of his 1/2 inch cigar in his teeth. Anyone local West seattlite over 40 has a story about the old man. Weather it was the chickens in the window when the deli was in the junction or the only place to buy MD20-20 at 1:55 a.m. Mr. T was one unique dude. The family misses him but are left with a life time of memories!

Hmmm. JenV, sorry I hit a nerve. I’m not a jerk, really. I did say that I think it is quite a sad situation and yes, it was and assumption that he might’ve been paranoid because frequently paranoia precludes suicide. Also, I never see crackheads in that area. Just sayin’. and I think it might do you some good to calm down before you die of stress!

Sorry, comment time is over.
