West Seattle Crime Watch: Latest report roundup

Postponed from last night: the latest reports from the Southwest Precinct:

PROBABLY A BETTER IDEA TO JUST GO QUIETLY:
A man suspected of hit-and-run in the 8500 block of 16th SW struggled with officers before they finally got him under control and took him to jail. It happened around midnight Tuesday night; callers said somebody in a Toyota Corolla had driven over a traffic circle – the car was found nearby, abandoned, all four tires flat, full of open cans of “Icehouse” beer. Investigating officers learned another officer had stopped the driver a short time earlier, and that one squad car’s video camera had actually recorded the man leaving the wrecked car. They went to the driver’s nearby home; he resisted arrest, and officers learned he had a warrant out for something else too, as they took him off to jail.

MAKING A GETAWAY WITH CONSPICUOUS LOOT: A factory in the 1100 block of SW Spokane kicked out a man found in an employee locker room who shouldn’t have been there. He was last seen wearing a dark blue puffy down jacket. This is significant because a half-hour after that encounter, an employee reported somebody had stolen his dark blue puffy down jacket, containing his cell phone.

BURGLAR BUSTS THROUGH DOOR: Around 9 am on Tuesday, somebody broke through a front door in the 5400 block of 21st and stole items including a TV, iPod, camera, and watches.

CHECKBOOK FOUND IN UNLIKELY PLACE: At last report, poiice were trying to contact the owner of a black checkbook picked up by a driver on the eastbound shoulder of the West Seattle Bridge on Tuesday morning.

MYSTERIOUS SHOTS COINCIDE WITH CAR BREAK-IN: While investigating a report of shots fired in the 5900 block of 18th SW around 2:30 am on Monday, police were flagged down by a woman who said someone broke a window, got into her car, and stole the stereo/DVD/TV, at about the time she saw what looked like muzzle flashes from gunshots. The loot and suspect(s) weren’t found, but five spent 9mm casings were.

TAKING NO CHANCES: Around 10 am Monday in the 4500 block of 47th SW, a man thought he heard an intruder, so he got a gun and started going around his house to look for the possible burglar. In the meantime, police arrived too, and told him it would be a good idea if he put the gun down. No intruder was found and nothing was taken, but it’s believed somebody had indeed gotten in through a window.

ANOTHER MORNING BREAK-IN: This time, in the 5200 block of 41st SW, between 8:30 and 10 am on Monday, somebody entered through a bathroom window and stole a camera, camcorder, earrings, mp3 player, watches, and cash.

As we always remind you – don’t hesitate to call police when you see or hear something suspicious, and of course when you believe a crime has been (or is being) committed. In addition to 911, there’s a non-emergency line at 206/625-5011. A big collection of Seattle Police crime-prevention resources is linked from the Southwest Precinct’s Crime Prevention page. Those morning break ins are giving me the CREEPS! I am a stay at home mom with a young child and so I’m often home during those hours. I hope that the burglers know that my big, black, friendly, goofy dog knows the difference between good guys and bad guys. (I hope that my dog knows the difference, too.)

It is creepy we were broken into in the am, and I was at home I’m still freaked out.

Daytime burglaries in West Seattle were very common in the mid-80’s too, the last time we had an economy this bad.

Last time we were broken into (it was during the night while we were sleeping), SPD told us it’s much more common for robberies during daylight than it is at night.

Sorry, comment time is over.
