Today at 3 in the afternoon. He rings the doorbell. I'm alone in the house. I answer after getting out my cell phone in case I need to get a photo. A kid probably in his twenties, well dressed but in a "hoody" sweatshirt, wearing an id tag. But he doesn't introduce himself or say what group he is with. Said something about food and how he is looking for someone to "adopt" him and asked if I am interested. Then says that he is just joking. I said I am not interested and closed the door while he is still talking. He told me to have a nice day through the closed door. He seemed like a nice kid. I HATE having to be suspicious of people. I hope he was legitimate. Just a heads up to the community. Maybe others have encountered him? I did get a (bad) photo as he walked away. We live a few blocks up the hill from Alki beach, south of Admiral Way.

This sounds like a frightening experience. Glad you are alright.

I no longer answer the door day or night unless I am expecting someone (deliver person, friend).
A year or so ago hwe had a guy offering us a 3,000 home security system if we would let him place a company sign in our yard, we said no thank you. The guy pressed on and finally asked me for my security number and tol dme he wasn't going to leave without the number. He pushed our door open and got inside our house. Our daughter was in her room in back of the house. I got him to stand on the front entry porch and told him to leave and I was calling the police. His eyes never blinked and the picture on his badge was a man in his 40's with graying hair and at least 200 pounds, the guy was maybe 5'7 and weighed no more than 145, if that and had brown hair. I called the security system company and was told that a driver in Tacoma had their badge stolen. A neighbor got a picture of this guy and posted it in the Westwood post office. 2 weeks later we had a new mail carrier who told me her best friend was assaulted by a guy with the same description.
A few years ago we had a guy drive up on our driveway in a white truck complete with cable wire, he entered our backyard and proceeded to cut wires or something. I called Comcast and no driver was dispatched for any of our neighbors, I went outside to speak to this guy and he ran in his truck and drove speeding away aware I knew he was phony.

There was a youngish girl going door to door last night in Arbor Heights. She came to our house more than once but we never heard the knock in time. It was around 8pm which seemed a little late. I followed her down the street to see what she was up to but when I encountered her I noticed an official looking bag and an LED necklace. She was a white girl, maybe around 19 or 20. I did not confront her as we were in a dark setting and I did not want to intimidate her (I am a guy). We were walking in opposite directions so I only had a moment to think. She looked official and really young so I did not want to frighten her. She also looked me in the eye and smiled, so she did not seem shady either. But it seemed odd to be going door to door so late. And unsafe for her. Anyone else in the area notice this last night?

8pm does seem late to be going door to door, but we have had these young guys maybe just out of high school knock on our door at 9:00-9:30pm with their clipboards in hand and a large box of perfumes, candy or magazines.
Last year we also had these 2 young man in their early 20's asking for donations for the Freedom church on Roxbury & 35th for a trip somewhere, so my husband gave them a $20.00, the next day I called the church and found out no such donation program was in the works so we were scammed.

I figure people are going door-to-door for one of two reasons: either (1) they're trying to get $ from you (whether legitimate or scam), or (2) because they're up to no good (casing and/or causing immediate harm). If they're trying to get $ (for whatever reason), they must be somewhat successful or else they'd stop doing it. If people aren't expecting someone and don't know who it is, don't open the door. Yell through the door, get a peep-hole installed on your door to check on them. If they keep getting $, they will keep trying. If their intent is to cause harm to person and/or property, you can protect yourself by not opening the door to begin with.
I think people are just so afraid of seeming rude by ignoring them. But there's no rule that says if my phone or doorbell rings that I must answer it.
