West Seattle’s new State Senator

Joe McDermott, after the King County Council (shown in the second photo) officially appointed him. (Top photo shows Sen. Among many other things, he formerly taught at South Seattle Community College; on a completely tangential note now, SSCC happens to be where the WSB video crew attended the Northwest Wine Academy release party this evening; clips and info coming up late tonight.

why do all politicians look SOOO boring?

let’s see..I’m nearing 50…what happened to all those 60’s ‘we’re gonna change the world” people? Surely, THEY’RE not the ones in the Nordstrom suits with bad comb-overs and sensible shoes…

Apparently ‘we’re gonna change the world’ has given way to ‘priorities for people’. How very inspiring. I’m wondering if we ever get to vote for our elected officials, or if they’re always just anointed by party bosses in some back room.

If people have followed the process Ã¢â‚¬â€œ the reason for an appointment is because of a mid-term vacancy. Sen. McDermottÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s seat will be up for election in the regular election year. For people wanting to be a part of the process in filling the House seat that is opening, they still need PCOs and anyone can do that. That seat likewise will be open next year in the regular election.

And. Sen McDermottÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Ã¢â‚¬Å“day jobÃ¢â‚¬Â is as a tour guide on the Seattle Underground. Wearing a suit does not make a person boring!

Joe has been a great Rep for the 34th for the last 7 years. He will be a great Senator for us as well. He might get so busy he no longer has time to answer his own email anymore, but you can bet that even if you do not agree with him on every issue, he will listen and argue his views and votes with intelligence, insight and humor.

Problem is in this case that we did vote for a state senator but he decided to go work for a lobbyist before finishing his term. It annoys me that the government now has to spend time shuffling and changing things around because our state senator ran off. Maybe we should have an initiative that would require elected officials to finish thier term before getting that lobblist job.

In the meantime – good luck to new Senator McDermott. I don’t know a lot about him, being new to West Seattle, but what I know so far I like.
